Conceptual Metaphor in the “Melian Dialogue”

    No full text
The “Melian Dialogue” serves as a prime example of how political thinking manifests itself in how one talks and, obviously, acts. During the negotiations the Athenians heavily employ vocabulary that is prototypically found in financial contexts to talk about stuff that was only rarely, if not at all, conceptualized as such. At the bottom of this is how the Athenians did politics back then, namely by placing all and everything on the cost-benefit scale (commonly known as “Realpolitik”). The relevant metaphors could be subsumed under the general supermetaphor LIFE IS COMMERCE that captures the quintessence of “Realpolitik”

Συγκριτική μελέτη των μεγεθυντικών επιθημάτων -one, -ona και -άρος, -άρα της Ιταλικής και της Νέας Ελληνικής εντός των εκφωνημάτων

This paper aims to describe the morphopragmatic functions of Italian’s suffixes -one, -ona and the Modern Greek’s -αρος, -άρα. According to Dressler Merlini Barbaresi (1994) morphological rules interact directly with pragmatic conditions. We analyse in depth (a) the pragmatic effects of augmentatives in speech situations and speech acts, (b) the interaction between the features [big] and [fictive] and the resulting character of exaggeration, on which ludic effects are mainly based

Attitudes of second-generation immigrant native English speakers vs. native English speakers towards foreign accents

    No full text
This study examined the attitudes towards non-native speakers by second-generation immigrant native English speakers (SGINES) vs. native English speakers whose parents were both native English speakers (NES). Participants rated recordings of accented English (Thai, Albanian, Pakistani, and Italian) as well as Southeast British English on ‘approachability’, ‘friendliness’, ‘intelligibility’, and ‘attractiveness’. It was found that (a) SGINES rated more favourably foreign accented English than NES did and (b) the two groups shared implicit biases towards accents so that Italian was, overall, the most favourable accent, Albanian was the least favourable one, and Thai and Pakistani were in between

Linguistic variety in the educational process has gathered momentum in recent years, since it serves pedagogical, social and linguistic objectives. The mainstream textbook is considered one of the most important sources of information reflecting the authors’ method of exploiting local dialects which influences students’ attitudes towards these dialects. In the present research, an attempt was made to investigate the existence of linguistic variety in the coursebooks of the Μodern Greek Language of the Greek high school by using Content Analysis (Μπονίδης 2004). Six textbooks were put under the lens revealing that they do not provide students with sufficient exposure to geographical language variation. Finally, the major conclusions are presented along with reflections for further improvement of our research

Truth-conditional pragmatics: A reconsideration of the distinction between narrowing and broadening

    No full text
Lexical adjustment can be achieved by a pragmatic process of lexical modulation or ad hoc concept construction. While this process is claimed to be uniform, it is also commonly viewed as falling into two distinct types: narrowing and broadening. In the current paper, we take issue with this two-directional approach to ad hoc concept construction. We argue that it is based on a problematic line of argument as well as terminological misapplication, detracting from transparency and parsimony. In this light, the dual view of ad hoc concept construction needs to be replaced by a more coherent or integrative type of view that drops the distinction between narrowing and broadening or their synonymous terms

An attempt at unveiling the mystery of the present perfect – by analyzing it as a device to counterbalance the impact of other grammatical entities

    No full text
The paper argues that the raison d’être of the present perfect (PP) across languages is not in its meaning but in certain functional dependencies. The existence of grammatical entities in a language is conjectured to be neither accidental/haphazard, nor the result of some magic (God-given). Grammatical entities in a language emerge and exist in order to offset the impact of other grammatical entities; they either hang together or exist to make up for the absence of other grammatical entities. PP signals the value non-witnessed intrinsically, not by default, counterbalancing the witnessed-by-default value of the preterit, and the two grammemes hang together
