Mergers and acquisitions in OIC countries: the role of strategic similarity in bank performance

    Get PDF
Purpose - This research aims to evaluate the impact of strategic similarity on M&A performance in banking within OIC countries. The study investigates how strategic alignment influences M&A outcomes and explores the role of cultural fit, cross-border factors, and capital adequacy in shaping post-merger success.Method - A quantitative approach is used in this study, using secondary data from annual reports of banking institutions in OIC member countries that experienced mergers and acquisitions from 2013 to 2022. This study uses 38 M&A transaction data obtained from Bank Focus. The hypothesis is tested using a partial least squares structural equation model.Result - The finding reveals that the strategic similarity factor could not explain the success of M&A performance for both Islamic and conventional banks. Cultural misalignment and cross-border regulatory issues are key factors affecting post-merger success. The one-year observation period was too short, but capital adequacy was found to influence performance significantly.Implication - Theoretically, models of M&A success should include cultural and regulatory dimensions and consider a longer-term view. Managers should prioritise cultural integration, address regulatory challenges, and align capital adequacy strategies to improve post-merger outcomes and resilience.Originality - This research discussed the factors determining successful M&A performance in banks in OIC countries. The findings can be used to develop insights into mergers and acquisitions in the banking sector

    No full text
Acute injuries or acute trauma often occur as a result of accidents on the road or due to other activities such as exercising or working. Acute injuries require immediate attention to avoid complications and increase the victim's comfort. One method of acute trauma relief is PRICE (protection, rest, ice, compression, elevation). Karangpandan volunteers are a self-dedicated group working independently on their own initiative to help the community. Knowledge and skills in handling injuries are important things that they must master. The implementation method is in the form of training activities on PRICE, demonstrating skills in using the PRICE method in everyday injury management. This activity involved 24 volunteers from Karangpandan Volunteers. The method of assessing knowledge and skills uses a questionnaire and checklist sheet, each containing 10 question/observation items. The results of the activity show an increase in knowledge and skills regarding the use of the PRICE method by volunteers

As a non-religious public university, Diponegoro University accommodates students from various religious and fundamentalist backgrounds. Since a person's religious values have an influence on their perspective on the values of inter-sex relationships, it is suspected that both variables also influence their perspective on these relationships. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of religiosity and religious fundamentalism on the perception of gender equality among Muslim students in Indonesia. Based on the literature review, it is hypothesized that religiosity and religious fundamentalism have a negative impact on the perception of gender equality. The study employs a quantitative approach with a survey design. Data were collected using a questionnaire specifically designed for Muslim students. The study involved 294 Muslim students from Diponegoro University, Semarang, Indonesia. The participants were selected using a cluster sampling technique based on faculty, study program, and class. Hypothesis testing was conducted using multiple regression analysis. The findings reveal that Muslim students’ perception of gender equality is negatively influenced by religiosity and religious fundamentalism. However their total contribution to the perrception is small, 6.4% for males and 5.6% for females. Further research is needed to explore this relationship in greater depth

    Get PDF
This research explores the phases of the spiritual journey in Suluk Linglung, a work by Sunan Kalijaga, through a semiotic analysis. Suluk Linglung is a piece of literature that contains the teachings of Sufism, characterized by Javanese elements. This Suluk reports the spiritual journey of a highly revered Javanese saint, Kanjeng Sunan Kalijaga. The term 'linglung' in the Javanese vocabulary implies confusion, indecision, or a condition full of doubt. It represents a dilemma, indicating existential confusion. There are phases in the spiritual journey that are laden with symbols and can be interpreted from a Sufism perspective. Hence, this Suluk becomes intriguing to study using semiotic methods. The study results reveal five phases of the spiritual journey, which are abundant in meaning: First, the meeting with Sunan Bonang. Second, Ascetic Practice on the Riverbank. Third, Laku Ngidang. Fourth, Hajj Pilgrimage to Mecca. Fifth, Meeting with Prophet Khidr. Contribution: Discovering the style and phase of Sunan Kalijaga's spiritual journey. The language used in Suluk Linglung is a language full of symbols. With semiotics, we can do a deeper ‘interpretation’. That Sunan Kalijaga's practice was not merely a physical practice, but also an inner practice that was expressed using a deep and poetic literary language

With a qualitative research method, a case study approach with conflict theory, this study presents information that violations found include violations at the stages of the election process and violations at non-stages. These violations are more directed at administrative violations in the data collection of permanent election candidates, Ad-hoc committee candidates, violations in the implementation of the campaign, ASN neutrality, vote recounts, and errors in filling out form D. These violations are said to be conflicts because one party has different goals with another. The violations that occur were included in the type of surface conflict but do not rule out the possibility of becoming alternative conflicts and open conflicts in the future because all citizens did not obtain political education so they did not understand how politics works properly

The residents of Gili Island, better known as Oxygen Island, have an age composition with more than 40% of its residents being over 100 years old. This condition has sparked the curiosity of many researchers regarding its cause. Based on this background, an observation was conducted in the Gili area. Using several concepts from Asset-Based Community Development, it can be identified that Oksigen Island has many assets that must be developed. These assets consist of tangible and intangible objects. In contrast to previous results, which stated that the influence of clean oxygen with a level of 20.9% is what affects the longevity of the residents of Gili Island, the results of this service conclude that in addition to the beneficial oxygen levels, the determining aspect is obtained from intangible assets, namely the level of religiosity or religiousness of the island's residents which is good. The indicator can be seen from their activities, at every time the words of Tayyibah adorn their lives

The limitations of direct observation-based learning media often hinder the development of prospective teachers' identification skills. This study aims to develop students' identification skills in Allexium Pteridophyta, Bryophyta, and Spermatophyta. This developmental research uses the Borg and Gall research model. Data collection uses observation and interview sheets, questionnaires, and post-test questions on students' identification skills. The sampling technique was convenience sampling, with a population of 56 prospective teachers. The study found that the Allexium media was declared valid by experts using STEM improvements as a reference, and the media was equipped with original plant parts. The results of the practicality test based on responses from lecturers and students showed that Allexium was rated practical, with an average score of 90%. The results of the trial of use using the t-test showed that the Sig. (2 tailed) value < α (0.05), then Ha was accepted. This shows that the use of real plant parts in Allexium media is effective for students' identification skills. In further research, it is expected that the addition of plant collections and analysis of the application of question cards can be carried out so that its effectiveness in supporting the completeness of Allexium can be determined

Korean as a Foreign Language Learners’ Motivation: Language Learning Stories from Indonesian Learners

    Get PDF
Although the Korean Wave has grown exponentially in Indonesia, much of the linguistic landscape has not received enough attention in the literature, especially the motivational aspect. Based on the L2 Motivation Self System (L2MSS), the present study focuses on the language learning stories of Indonesian learners of Korean as a foreign language (KFL)—consisting of two females and one male.  Their language learning stories cover the past, present, and future trajectories of their language learning. Four salient themes are generated through the interview–the questions of which were partially based on the Language Learning Story Interview. The first theme is related to the pure interest in the popular culture of Korea—mostly related to the exponential growth of the Korean Wave. The second theme is characterized by the aspiration to get jobs in Korea. The third theme concerns education or the desire to pursue higher education in Korea. Lastly, parental support and intercultural marriage form the last source of motivation and contribute to creating a supporting learning environment. Conclusively, this study reveals that Indonesian KFL learners mostly exhibit both ideal L2 self and ought-to L2 self–with the former being more dominant than the latter. Implications of the study are also provided
