SHORT-TERM OUTCOMES OF VERY LOW BIRTH WEIGHT INFANTS IN RIGA MATERNITY HOSPITAL

    Get PDF
As the preterm birth rate is increasing in most countries, the number of very low birth weight infants (VLBW - birth weight less than 1500 grams) is also growing. VLBW infants are at a high risk of morbidity and mortality, but the adverse outcomes have been decreasing over the last few years due to improvements in the quality of care. The main objective of this research is to determine the risk factors of early neonatal morbidity, rate of survival, frequency of disease and complications in VLBW infants as well as to compare the differences between the years. The data was collected from the Riga Maternity hospital’s medical records over a five-year period from 2015 to 2019. A total of 209 VLBW were admitted to the Riga Maternity hospital’s intensive care unit, of whom 192 (92.3%) survived to discharge. Over the five years the number of VLBW infants increased almost by half, while the mortality rate fluctuated between the years. Respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis were the two main complications for the infants. More than half (62.5%) of non-survivors died within the first 24 hours after birth with respiratory failure being the leading cause. Survival rate was strongly associated with gestational age and birth weight

CONSTRUCTION OF EXAMPLES AND COUNTEREXAMPLES IN PRIMARY SCHOOL TO VERIFY THE TRUTH OF STATEMENTS

    Get PDF
In the modern mathematics learning process in school, the skill of creating examples and counterexamples in both familiar and new situations is emphasized. In the context of critical thinking, the construction of examples and counterexamples is an effective technique for evaluating statements and justifying arguments. This technique is suitable for students before other methods of proving general statements in mathematics are introduced. The aim of the study is to highlight the topics of the study course "Elements of Mathematical Logic and Set Theory" for the Professional Bachelor\u27s degree in Teacher Education, which are relevant for constructing examples and counterexamples. In the study, the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the answers of the students in teacher programs to the questions of the questionnaire about the student experience related to the ability to formulate examples and counterexamples was carried out. The research shows that the creation of examples and counterexamples to the given statements does not cause great difficulties. It is much more difficult to create statements with mathematical content for grades 1-6, the truth verification of which, using the technique of constructing examples and counterexamples, would activate the formation of understanding of mathematical concepts and relationships. In order to connect the topics of the "Elements of Mathematical Logic and Set Theory" course with the planned results of primary education, a qualitative content analysis of the Latvian primary education standard and the primary education program was carried out. Based on the results obtained in the study, the authors identified several topics that are relevant in the course "Elements of Mathematical Logic and Set Theory".

FORMATION OF FUTURE TEACHERS\u27 VALUE ATTITUDE TO THE TEACHING PROFESSION: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS

    Get PDF
Pedagogical education determines the quality of professional training of specialists in all spheres of functioning of society and the state, which therefore contributes to their stability and development. In this regard, serious requirements are put forward to the personality of a modern teacher. However, the training of a teacher with an innovative type of thinking, ready for self-improvement throughout life, faces a number of problems: organizational, content, financial, etc. The development of modern pedagogical education is greatly influenced by informatization and the development of an open society, the development of civil society, the need to form a new cultural type of personality, etc. High requirements for the training of future teachers in modern conditions are in conflict with the falling prestige of this profession. In modern Ukrainian society the pedagogical profession is usually highly appreciated at the scientific and theoretical level, as well as at the declarative state level. However, despite this, in practice this assessment in terms of salary and working conditions is low. After all, the assessment of teachers by themselves as well as parents is not very high. The survey of future teachers (n=102) also confirmed this tendency. This circumstance actualizes the search for ways to form future teachers\u27 value attitude to the teaching profession. Value attitude is the subject\u27s internal acceptance of an object as a value. The value attitude to the pedagogical profession is represented by the unity of three components: cognitive, emotional and functional. In order to form in the mind of future teachers a value attitude to the teaching profession in the educational process of a higher education institution, a system was created in which the emphasis was placed on the formation of motivation for professional activity, modeling and solving professional and pedagogical tasks, as well as the permanent involvement of students in practical activities. The implemented pedagogical experiment proved the effectiveness of such a system

Ukrainian research sample consisted of 98 students including 16 male students (16.33%) and 82 female students (83.67%). A convenience sampling technique was used for selecting the research sample. The survey was conducted in October 2020 - March 2021. The current research is carried out within the project of National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine “Organization of Educational Process in the Content of Unpredicted Changes (the Covid-19 Pandemic): Comparative Analysis (Ukraine – EU countries)”, No. 0121U108690

TEACHERS’ PERSPECTIVES ON PROMOTING CHILDREN’S PARTICIPATION IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

    Get PDF
In democratic society, participation is child’s right from an early age. Within early childhood educational practice, teachers should create diverse and meaningful situations in which children can get experience of how to be part of a group or community. The aim of the study was to examine teachers’ perspectives on promoting children’s participation in early childhood education. A survey of teachers involved in 5- and 6-year old children’s preparation for school was conducted. 2419 teachers representing 741 educational institutions of Latvia participated in the survey. Using a 6-point Likert scale, respondents assessed different statements regarding children’s participation in early childhood education. Teachers’ preparedness to carry out the children’s participation in their educational practice was self-assessed as well. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The analysis of the survey data shows that teachers consider children’s participation a significant component of the educational process. The involvement of children in the discussion of important group issues and their influence on decision-making as well as teachers’ respect of children’s questions during the play-based lesson time was ambiguously assessed. Most teachers declare appropriate self-assessed competences to promote children’s participation in their educational practice.

    Get PDF
This study aim is to explore the relationship between coependency and coping strategies of women in relationship with an individual addicted to psychoactive substances. The study included 31 women aged 25 to 64 years (M = 42.03; SD = 9.45). Three surveys were used in the study - Socio-Demographic Data Survey; Spann-Fischer Co-dependence Scale; The Ways of Coping Scale. Spearman\u27s correlation analysis was used to determine the liabilities, and the prediction of coping strategies / ways of indicators was performed by linear regression analysis. It was found that there is a statistically significant relationship between codependency and emotion-focused coping as strategy (strategic problem- solving, escape and avoidance, taking responsibility). Research on current coping strategies has shown that emotion-focused coping as strategy and corresponding types of stress management such as seeking social support, positive reassessment, planned problem solving and escape and avoidance are more often used.

    COMMUNICATIVE PHENOMENOLOGICAL THEORY OF LAW

    Get PDF
Today the communicative phenomenological law theory is one of the most popular post-non-classical norms of law. Its initial premise is a position: communication is a condition for the existence of law and a form, not just a public one. Texts, actions for their construction and interpretation, the associated thinking, understanding, and interaction of legal subjects form the content of the communication. Considerable interest in the issues of the communicative interaction of legal subjects leads to the assumption that the types of integration understanding are intensively sought in the interpretation of legal phenomena. As noted by one of the most prominent representatives of this theory of law, A.V. Polyakov, legal communication is a legal interaction of legal subjects that arises on the basis of legal interpretation, provides them with correlative powers and legal obligations that are implemented in legal behaviour. At the same time, legal communication is not only a phenomenon of law but also communication as an interactive dialogue of legal subjects, which is implemented using language, as well as other non-verbal means of communication. The theory of legal communication is created on the basis of the need to study the problems of the influence and effectiveness of legislative texts, their impact, which means that legal communication should provide not only the connection of the legislator with the subject of law but also feedback – the connection of the subject of law with the legislator

    THE CONCEPT OF ECOSYSTEM SERVICES

    Get PDF
The world’s natural capital is shrinking faster and faster. Loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services is caused by changes in habitats, mainly due to land use change, the spread of invasive species, environmental pollution and climate change. Current unsustainable consumption and production patterns also contribute to the depletion of natural resources and threaten the services provided by ecosystems. At the moment, relatively little is said about ecosystem services, attempts have been made to gather the experience of different countries, but in reality only a few municipalities pay much attention to this issue
