Graded Events: What does a grade mean? Considerations on grading for students, teachers, and families.
The purpose of this presentation is to present a platform that promotes equitable grading practices. The legal implications for grading is first introduced to provide the justification for grading practices that do not impinge of the liberty of students. Topics of late work, due dates, homework, grade inflation, and confidentiality are addressed through equitable lenses
Supply and Demand Data for California Physical Education Teachers
The labor market represents a core issue that professions should strive to understand. In California, the labor market is particularly relevant for those in education as there is discussion around a teacher shortage. Couple that with a profession that has had to endure teacher layoffs stemming from underlying economic issues, such as school district concerns about budget deficits, it highlights the overall complexity of the labor market. For members of the physical education profession, dealing with the dynamical nature of the labor market has been an unfortunate reality. From physical education teachers to physical education teacher education programs, key stakeholders should know the fundamentals regarding the labor market. The purpose of this article is to summarize recent supply and demand data for California physical education teachers. Beyond describing supply and demand data, implications will be discussed regarding how labor market trends impact members of the profession
Preparing Educational Leaders for 21st Century Inclusive School Communities: Transforming University Preparation Programs
University educational leadership preparation programs whose mission is to prepare Transitional Kindergarten through 12th grade (TK-12) school administrators need to transform their curriculum so that all leaders (not just special education leaders) have the knowledge and skills to create inclusive school communities that truly include all students. Evidence suggests that even though there are policies, laws, recommendations and an empirical base that supports inclusive education for students with disabilities, equity, achievement and opportunity gaps remain in our nation’s public schools. The purpose of this conceptual study is to provide a look at redesigned preparation programs built on professional standards changes, evidencebased practices, and practice-based evidence correlated with inclusive school communities. Transformed preparation programs prepare educational leaders who lead inclusive school communities in closing the gaps for students with disabilities, considering that 100% of the students spend 80% or more of their day in general education classrooms. The impact for students with disabilities is that they experience equity, social justice and their civil rights for education in inclusive school communities where all benefit
Fixed Points of a Generalized Discrete Baker\u27s Transformation
In this note we investigate the fixed point sets for the iterations of a generalization of the two-dimensional discrete baker\u27s transformation. In particular, we will derive explicit formulas for the fixed points, and the number of fixed points. Moreover, we will show that the set of all fixed points is a closed set. This generalizes the some of known results for the classical baker\u27s transformation
Algebraic Curvature Tensors of Einstein and Weakly Einstein Model Spaces
This research investigates the restrictions on the symmetric bilinear form with associated algebraic curvature tensor R in Einstein and Weakly Einstein model spaces. We show that if a model space is Einstein and has a positive definite inner product, then: if the scalar curvature is non-negative, the model space has constant sectional curvature, and if the scalar curvature is negative, the matrix associated to the symmetric bilinear form can have at most two eigenvalues
Rotation Symmetries of Sequential Matrices with Applications to the Jacobi Symbol
Using an action of the dihedral group on sets of square matrices, we identify various symmetry properties of sequential matrices with integer entries. We then use those properties to identify new symmetries involving the Legendre and Jacobi symbols. Our work generalizes several well-known facts in quadratic reciprocity
Classifications of ℓ-Zero-Sumfree Sets
The set of all ℓ-zero-sumfree subsets of ℤ/nℤ is a simplicial complex denoted by Δn, ℓ. We create an algorithm via defining a set of integer partitions we call (n,ℓ)-congruent partitions in order to compute this complex for moderately-sized parameters n and ℓ. We also theoretically determine Δn, ℓ for several infinite families of parameters, and compute the intersection posets and the characteristic polynomials of the corresponding coordinate subspace arrangements.
 
Diplomatic Dynamics of International Treaty Negotiations
The negotiation process of international treaties is heavily influenced by socioeconomic factors. In this paper, we aim to answer the question of how to quantify the influential factors among countries. We do so by categorizing them into different interest groups based on their attitudes towards the treaty as well as their socioeconomic statuses and modeling the movement of countries between these interest groups. This model is based on an epidemiological approach to quantifying influence. Through our research, we discovered two equilibrium points, which reveal the conditions under which all countries would either support or oppose a treaty. We also ran simulations under several hypothetical scenarios under which equilibria would occur, demonstrating the practical applications of our model. We further analyze the model\u27s real life application and the influence of certain parameters through two case studies: the first is on the Basel Convention\u27s negotiation process and the second is on the spread of carbon pricing
Chronic Disease Prevention Program
As our population continues to grow, health professionals in the U.S. have a growing concernfor the current and future population related to diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is an underlyingdisease that occurs when one’s blood sugar level is too high for a prolonged period of time.(1)When untreated, short-term and long-term effects are detrimental. Acute complications include:“diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state, or death.” (3) Moreover, the long-termeffects include: “cardiovascular disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease, foot ulcers, and damage tothe eyes.”Diabetes is a growing epidemic causing health professionals to research prevention methods aswell as a way to diagnosis patients based on certain characteristics. As a result, the Chronic DiseasePrevention Program (CDPP) provides blood sugar testing in a non-traditional setting (e.g. grocerystores, libraries, etc.). By using the CDPP data set and applying the tools of machine learningwe will predict whether someone is diabetic or requires additional testing. Machine learning is away to develop algorithms, allowing the computers to learn. The attributes that will be analyzedin the data set are: BMI group, age, gender, blood sugar, self diabetes, and whether the testingwas done during fasting or randomly. These attributes were analyzed using Linear Regressionto learn more about the relationship between the response variable (i.e. blood sugar) and theexplanatory variable. Besides applying Linear Regression, we used Multiple Linear Regression aswell a K-Nearest Neighbors, and Decision Tree
California Human Relations Commissions: A Survey of Needs, Capacities, and Interests
Research was conducted as a service-learning capstone project in partnership with the California Association of Human Relations Organizations (CAHRO). The purpose was to gather information relevant to CAHRO’s mission of serving and strengthening our state’s local human relations commissions (HRCs), and to explore the feasibility of creating service-learning partnerships between HRCs and California State University campuses (through their respective Centers for Community Engagement). Responses to an online survey were received from 30 of California’s 43 active HRCs. Key findings are presented in the area of resources, key issues addressed, populations served, and interest in engaging in specific statewide initiatives (including an anti-hate crime network, CAHRO’s statewide bulletin, and proposed human relations / service learning partnerships).
