BitTorrent Protocol and a Modified Secretary Problem
BitTorrent is a popular file sharing protocol in which a user downloads a file from a large collection of seeders, each of which has the file. The user downloads from b of these seeders, but repeatedly drops its worst connection and establishes a new one in search of the best b connections. In this paper we model the BitTorrent protocol using a modified secretary problem, and in doing so find precise stopping times for an arbitrary b. We show that every b gives the same success probability, and that this probability asymptotically approaches 1/e
Making Physical Education Meaningful for Today’s Students
Are students more or less interested in physical education classes today than they were in the past? How are today’s teachers of physical education changing in response to the options and distractions that today’s youth are engaged with? This paper discusses how student engagement can be increased and what teachers might do to make their physical education classes more meaningful, engaging, and relevant to their students. If teachers understand why students enjoy physical education, as well as why they may dislike the subject, they can improve their planning and avoid the displeasure some students have towards physical education. Teachers need to listen to their students and offer activities and learning opportunities that appeal to everyone in the classroom. Educators should also provide meaningful exposure to activities that challenge, motivate, and inspire all youth to be active and strive to be healthier and ultimately happier, throughout their lives
Assessing the Effect of a College-Level Nutrition Course on Kinesiology Student Knowledge
The purpose of this study was to assess nutrition knowledge among Kinesiology students in order quantify student understanding of fundamental nutrition principles and determine if differences were significant between students who had completed a college-level nutrition course versus those who had not. It was hypothesized that students who completed a college nutrition course would score significantly higher in each categorical domain as well as total knowledge. Kinesiology students were surveyed utilizing a validated instrument to assess fundamental nutrition knowledge. Specific emphasis was placed on recruiting students who had completed a college-level nutrition course. Question items were categorized into four distinct categorical domains including: sources of nutrients, dietary recommendations, identification of optimal dietary choices, and awareness of diet-disease relationships. Students who had previously completed a college-level nutrition course (n = 62) scored significantly higher than those who had not (n = 46) for dietary recommendations (7.36 ± 1.92 and 6.61 ± 1.93, p = .047), sources of nutrients (40.16 ± 9.65 and 35.72 ± 9.63, p = .02), and total score (57.48 ± 13.11 and 51.07 ± 13.48, p = .014). There was no significant difference between groups associated with dietary choices (p = .174) and diet-disease relationship (p = .126). Overall, students who completed a college-level nutrition course attained higher knowledge scores than those who did not. While there was a difference in knowledge, total percent correct answers for both groups were well below the established cutoff by content raters indicating a need to further assess pedagogical content within nutrition courses and its articulation to knowledge questionnaires
Latino Educational Leadership: Serving Latino Communities and Preparing Latinx Leaders Across the P-20 Pipeline
Latino Educational Leadership is a critical book for pre-service and in-service Latino leaders. The book serves as a call to action for Latinx leaders in K-12 and higher education pipeline to advocate, empower, and transform Latinx experiences throughout the P-20 pipeline. The collection of essays in this book draw upon Latino-oriented methodologies and epistemologies to present testimonios, case studies, and theoretical models for building the Latino educational leadership pipeline. My review of this book speaks to its criticality for current and future leaders with respect to the historically marginalized Latino community.

Thank you for your interest in this special issue of the Journal of Transformative Leadership and Policy Studies Special Issue-Mentoring Students of Color in Educational Leadership Doctoral Programs. This special issue of JTLPS explores insights into mentoring practices that effectively support doctoral students of color in attaining their degrees and in moving into positions in academia as faculty members, into K-20 leadership as practitioners. Socialization into doctoral education supports student retention and completion. Such socialization practices include mentoring relationships that provide opportunities for doctoral students of color to navigate the process of doctoral study and research
Modeling Sexual Violence within the Homelessness Population through an Agent-Based Approach
Sexual violence is an unfortunate crime of opportunity, requiring an offender and a victim. We develop a model that simulates the occurrence of sexually violent events in an urban environment. Here, we take the victims to be homeless individuals since studies find that sexual violence is increasing in homeless communities. We modify an agent-based model for residential burglaries to incorporate non-stationary victims. The residential burglary simulations evolve by having the target house attractiveness increase when nearby residences were burgled, modeling the `broken window effect\u27. In the case of sexual violence, the victim is non-stationary, yet both offenders and victims visit locations, such as homeless shelters, based on their own perceptions of attractiveness. The attractiveness level of a location is affected by previous events, however, victims and offenders will consider an event differently. We allow for different victim behaviors, such as a risky lifestyle or being at the wrong place at the wrong time. We compare the resulting simulations to the events in San Francisco, CA. The simulated results agree with the expected behavior for the different types of victim behaviors. Moreover, the results show that simulated events are concentrated in regions near homeless shelters. We then tested the model with an increase in the generation of victim agents, observing the outcome for an increase in the number of homeless individuals. Initial increases in the victim generation rate substantially increase the overall amount of crime. However, after a certain level, increasing the number of victims does not increase the crime rates
Prime Labelings of Snake Graphs
A prime labeling of a graph G with n vertices is a labeling of the vertices with distinct integers from the set {1, 2 ,..., n} such that the labels of any two adjacent vertices are relatively prime. In this paper, we introduce a snake graph, the fused union of identical cycles, and define a consecutive snake prime labeling for this new family of graphs. We characterize some snake graphs that have a consecutive snake prime labeling and then consider a variation of this labeling
