Finding the Window, Breaking the Block, then Connecting the World

    Get PDF
A girl lives in a room with a window through which she wants to see the beauty of the outside world. The window is large, taking up half a wall, and has shutters as well as curtains. Every day, she opens the window to let in the breeze. This gets the air moving in the room and helps to refresh her mind. What does she see through this window, and what does she want to see? In this narrative, Yuanyuan Zhang draws from her personal experiences to express different emotions and ideas and hopefully give encouragement to people who have had similar experiences. She knows how vital windows are

Upper Bounds for the Hausdorff Dimension of Weierstrass Curves

    Get PDF
We produce an upper bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the graph of a Weierstrass-type function. Whilst strictly weaker than existing results, it has the advantage of being directly computable from the theory of hyperbolic iterated function systems (IFS)

Black Queer Activism During the Aids Epidemic

    Get PDF
The history of LGBTQ Americans has frequently been told through the lens of White Queer individuals , and most Black American historiography fails to acknowledge the contributions that Black Queer Americans have made to end racial discrimination. Several publications throughout the 1980s demonstrate the efforts that Black Queer Americans have made in the fight against racism and homophobia that plagued the United States.&nbsp

Fighting on Both Fronts: The Struggle for Women\u27s Liberation in Conjunction with the Sandinista Rebellion

    Get PDF
The Nicaraguan revolution not only launched complete legislative and gubernatoral changes within the country in 1979, but the people\u27s revolution also launched a movement among women civilain populations that would engage in the rebellion against the Somoza dictatorship and later counterrevolutionatries. The emphasis of the women\u27s involvement lies within the implemenation of feminist ideology within the Sandinista socialist party by its most prominent figures and the Sandisinta party\u27s subsequent facilitatation of new women\u27s organizations. The emegence of women as activists and leaders served two concurrent purposes: to secure the freedom of the nation from the Somoza regime and the emancipation of women. This article examines the role of women throughout the course of the goverment overthrow and the correlation between the Sandinista movement and the women\u27s liberation movement in Nicaragua

Native American Student Healthcare: Health, Hygiene, and Mortality at U.S Off-Reservation Boarding Schools

    Get PDF
The subject of student health at U.S off-reservation boarding schools is not often discussed in depth in historical research. As such, this study seeks to investigate this topic area and contribute towards bridging that gap. Oftentimes, official records indicated a wide array of efforts undertaken at boarding schools to maintain student health. However, these records conflict with accounts of the practical experience at these schools. Upon examination, the issues experienced at boarding schools stemmed from three interconnected problems: over enrollment, overcrowding, and inadequate funding. These facilities were designed to accommodate a specified student body size, which was exceeded when officials enrolled too many students. As a consequence, resources became stretched thin, and quality of life stagnated at a low point. This affected multiple areas of boarding schools including living arrangements, disease outbreaks, health curriculum, medical care, meal plans, and overall student mortality. Furthermore, these problems were exacerbated by school officials lack of honesty and transparency, with regard to the status of their institutions. When it came time to report to Congress, boarding school representatives frequently glossed over the reality of student health. As a result, it was difficult to get a full understanding of the scope of the problems faced within the boarding school system. Ultimately, school officials placed their institutions above the wellbeing of the students they promised to care for

Perspective on giving child birth in the United States

    No full text
Childbirth is part of being human. Although the basics of childbirth are the same all around the world, it is approached differently culturally. In the same way if anthropologist studied and analyzed childbirth, they would approach the topic differently. Anthropologist Ruth Benedict, Marvin Harris, and Bruno Latour would all use their own theories to analyze and learn about childbirth. Each approach would be different and conclude different outcomes. However, no one approach is correct. It is important to acknowledge the value of approaching a single topic with different perspectives

A Bioecological View of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy

    Get PDF
Culturally sustaining pedagogy (CSP) considers the impacts of schools on communities, explicitly calling upon schools to sustain instead of overlook the cultural modalities of communities of color (Paris, 2012). In this paper, we argue that one important influence schools should have on families is the awareness and knowledge that families’ culture are sustained and viewed as “official knowledge” (Ladson-Billings, 1995) in the education system. We do so by including a perspective found in the disciplines of developmental science, family science, and education, Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory. Specifically, we examine the principles of CSP from the Person-Process-Context-Time (PPCT) model within bioecological theory. Furthermore, we problematize the traditional practice of assigning homework and offer an implication for reimagining homework from a CSP lens.  Keywords: culturally sustaining pedagogy, bioecological theory, homework, family storytelling, PPCT mode

Review of Teacher Educators as Critical Storytellers: Effective Teachers and Windows and Mirrors

    Get PDF
Teacher Educators as Critical Storytellers: Effective Teachers and Windows and Mirrors is a collection of curated of stories that pushback against the narratives that define a “good” teacher. Told through through critical storytelling methodology, the book draws on the “windows” and “mirrors” framework to invite multiplicies into the understanding of teachers. The book successfully contributes to a broader, inclusive and culturally sustaining narrative of teaching and education related professions and can be implemented as a text for learning with both preservice and inservice teachers

Benfordness of the Generalized Gamma Distribution

    Get PDF
The generalized gamma distribution shows up in many problems related to engineering, hydrology as well as survival analysis. Earlier work has been done that estimated the deviation of the exponential and the Weibull distribution from Benford\u27s Law. We give a mathematical explanation for the Benfordness of the generalized gamma distribution and present a measure for the deviation of the generalized gamma distribution from the Benford distribution
