THE NEW VANGUARDS HOW AND WHY WOMEN OF COLOR ARE PIONEERS OF POP CULTURE.

    No full text
American Popular Culture is a worldwide phenomenon rooted in the export and import of mediums we deem to a high standard and look to as a means of escapism from the atrocities and tragedies of the world. There have been movements that spring up in pockets globally that draw the attention of a subculture group of people. Those people come together to create an environment that brings them closer together in support of whatever media they have decided to follow throughout their lives. A “fandom” refers to this group of people united around a particular figure in music, film, gaming, or other pop culture scenario. Recently the term “stan culture” has become interchangeable with “fandom.” While history can show that artists and philosophers have always cultivated fanbases of admirers and even devoted followers of their craft, the modernized version of fandom can be attributed to something different, something on the precise of disaster or greatness, it may just depend on the context in which you see it as such. The purpose of this study is to understand the influence young women of color (WOC) have on the consumption of pop culture and what becomes mainstream in the genre of fandoms. This paper will touch upon the shifts of fan culture within the digital age and how the interactions, behaviors, and racial alienation endanger the mental health and safe spaces that  have been established within their fandoms

A review on the field of forensic science and different techniques that can be applied to identify the pathogen and perpetrator of a bio crime

    Get PDF
Microbial forensics is a developing field that involves collecting evidence from the scene of a bio crime in order to identify the pathogen used, as well as building a case for criminal prosecution against the perpetrator. The field of microbial forensics and forensic science in general are continuously advancing to utilize the best equipped technology to collect microorganisms and potential clues from a crime scene as well as tools to test these sample collections and identify harmful microbes as well as the perpetrator. The first crucial step in a bio attack is collecting the microorganism with a variety of methods being available. Identifying a microorganism after collection is also crucial and is done by genome sequencing, DNA typing, and next generation sequencing (NGS). Decontamination is necessary in order to keep the public safe, and methods such as foam, chlorine dioxide gas, and methyl bromide fumigation have shown promising results in disinfecting a contaminated area. The identification of a perpetrator(s) in a bio crime is important for prosecution; and studies using techniques such as DNA typing, STR, and PCR, discovered efficacy in identifying an origin of the attack using these methods. In all, bio crimes have the potential to be dangerous to the public, and for that reason various efforts have been made to advance the field of microbial forensics. Along with these efforts, there have been many promising studies that show efficacy in combating a biological attack. In order to keep the public safe, future directions such as implementing a system of preventative measures is crucial

Fetch the Bolt Cutters, We’ve Been in Here for Too Long: An Analytical History of Women’s Resistance to Patriarchal Systems in Nigeria 1912-1976

    Get PDF
Abstract:  The paper reviews the history of Nigerian Women\u27s suppression. From an earlier focus on women\u27s suppression in the histories of religion, marriage, and education, this work takes on more recent studies by analyzing spheres of political participation to reveal the historical imbalance of women in political positions. This historiography counters previous work by the scholar, acknowledging women\u27s advocacy for participation in domains traditionally dominated by men. The work will consider how historians have studied women\u27s participation with focuses on female political events like Igbo Women\u27s Riots, female participation in the independence of Nigeria, and finally, women\u27s suffrage. By analyzing women\u27s participation in the Northern and Southern provinces of Nigeria side by side rather than together, we can see how women from each protectorate existed differently under patriarchal systems until their subsequent suffrage in 1976. This work aims to improve our knowledge of Nigerian women existing within the binds of male domination and the attempted acts of dismantling it
