A Motion Planning Algorithm in a Figure Eight Track

    Get PDF
We design a motion planning algorithm to coordinate the movements of two robots along a figure eight track, in such a way that no collisions occur. We use a topological approach to robot motion planning that relates instabilities in motion planning algorithms to topological features of configuration spaces. The topological complexity of a configuration space is an invariant that measures the complexity of motion planning algorithms. We show that the topological complexity of our problem is 3 and construct an explicit algorithm with three continuous instruction

Isoperimetric 3- and 4-Bubble Results on R With Density |x|

    Get PDF
We study the isoperimetric problem on ℝ1 with a prescribed density function f(x)=|x|. Under these conditions, we find that isoperimetric 3-bubble and 4-bubble results satisfy a regular structure. As our regions increase in size, the intervals that form them alternate back-and-forth across the origin, with the smaller regions closer to the origin. This expands on previously known observations about the single- and double-bubble results on ℝ with density |x|p

    For the Love of Music

    Get PDF
Are you E-ing, rolling, dropping, or popping? This is a question that the author was constantly asked when she attended a rave at the LA Sports Arena, basically asking if she was on Ecstasy. Not knowing what to expect, she was very surprised by the journey on which she embarked on. The author explores a subculture full of people who want to escape the realities of life. These same individuals gather every year for these eight to twelve hour parties, no matter what part of the world they are from. It is a subculture that is all about love for one another and for music

    Physical Attractiveness and Career Success

    Get PDF
The way an individual feels or see’s themselves physically can affect their overall confidence, self esteem, and can be equated with one’s capabilities in other aspects of life. This study examines how perceptions of one’s image, specifically one’s physical attractiveness, can be viewed as having an influence on how successful an individual believes he/she can be in their career. The study focuses on how an individual feels about his or her physical attractiveness and if they believe it is a career determinant. The findings suggest that individuals have stereotypes about the importance of possessing a specific image for career success. The findings also indicate that there needs to be further research done on how the perception of one’s physical appearance might be perceived as effecting other life opportunities and achievements (such as one’s self- esteem, personal relationships, and leisure pursuit). Furthermore, this study’s findings can also exemplify how certain occupational and organizational stereotypes can be reinforced and continued. Therefore, the findings show that further analysis on stereotypic role expectations within the workplace need to be conducted. By doing so, the extent to which this is having an effect on potential employees, workplace perceptions, and upward mobility of current employees can be further explored and addressed

The Freedom to Breathe: African Americans and Political Participation

    Get PDF
Objective: This research assesses political efficacy, religion, affluence, educational attainment, network social ties, extended work hours, and number of children to determine political participation in the Freedom to Breathe campaign. The author seeks to establish the distinctness between residents of Oakland, CA who participated in a “Freedom to Breathe” campaign, organized by environmental justice group Communities for a Better Environment (CBE) advocating against excessive air pollution, and the remaining residents who did not participate in the campaign. Methods: A survey was mailed to Oakland residents who did not participate in the campaign by means of random cluster sampling. A total of 10 blocks was randomly selected from the area map and five households were surveyed from each block. For each selected block, about 5-7 households were contacted for participation in the survey. Residents of the city of Oakland who had participated in the campaign were given a survey to complete at the headquarters of CBE during a weekly meeting. Results: We find that several contextual factors and social ties play a major role in mobilization of African Americans in this specific campaign. Avenues for future research are also discussed

New Repetitions: Questions and Suggestions for a More Trauma-Informed Production Process

    Get PDF
Trauma-informed care’s basic premise is that people are shaped by what has happened to them and what they have had to do to survive it. There is no shortage of examples to this effect, especially in our post-#MeToo and post-#WeSeeYouWAT culture. It’s easy to spot what isn’t working, but much harder to do something differently. That requires unlearning the decades of training and practice embedded in the performing arts. It requires us to deconstruct the perpetuated harm, justified by the cultural value of survival, grit, and the starving artist myth, though many of us, as educators, were taught those same rules when we were students. This article offers practical questions and suggestions for this process of deconstruction, specifically targeting every phase in the life cycle of a production
