Racism In American Law Enforcement: A Brief History, Critique, and Data-Based Solutions
The history of American law enforcement from the 1700s through the Jim Crow period is examined and tied to the Thirteenth Amendment\u27s empowerement of the legal re-enslavement of people of color in this piece, with the purpose of uncovering racism and racial disparities in modern-day American law enforcement. This discussion leads to a broader examination of racism and racial disparities in American law enforcement historically and in modernity. Research conducted by Stanford University based on the Oakland Police Department\u27s 2014 stop and search data is referenced to localize and modernize the issue of racial disparities in law enforcement. This piece concisely outlines the issue of racial disparities in American law enforcement, and provides an examination of a solution - data-informed policy
Dear Elizabeth (My Daughter, Motivator, and Best Friend)
Her name is Amy Rogers, and she is a first-generation Ph.D. student from Durham University, England. In this piece, Rogers writes a letter advising her daughter on her first-generation experience and lessons learned at university to ensure Elizabeth does not experience imposter syndrome and fits in! The real message is: “Do not expect perfection. Aim for the moon, and you are doing amazing things if you reach the stars.
Fawning, Masking, and Working as an Intimacy Professional on the Autism Spectrum
Though a common stereotype about people on the autism spectrum is that we lack empathy, the often-ignored reality is that we have a greater capacity for compassion than our neurotypical peers; the nature of the job as an intimacy choreographer is that they hold tremendous empathy for the most vulnerable people in the room. Therefore, we may have an innate advantage for qualification to work in that position. How do we adjust our ingrained societal expectations of what a person on the autism spectrum is capable of so that young neurodiverse artists growing up may see that they are equally capable of working in this field
Reflections on Grief, Joy, and Healing
I never imagined that a frequent negotiation between my doing what I feel is right and protecting my livelihood would be part of my existence as an educator in the public-school system. My days are often filled with mixed emotions that can range from love & joy to frustration & sadness. As I sat to begin to reflect on the past few years, I realized I had to pause and take deep breaths just to get words down on paper. When we began distance learning, I was propelled to reimagine any previous notions I had of what learning would look like, without the constraints of a classroom. These are my reflections on the last few years and on how I make it through my days as an educator in this changed landscape. In the end, what I\u27ve learned from these last few years, is que la lucha sigue till the day it’s not necessary
Promoting Student Success and DE&I in Experiential Education at an HBCU: STEM Lab Internship Programs : A low-cost lab internship program at Delaware State University provides a cost-effective model for increasing experiential opportunities for STEM students.
Over the past four years, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Inclusive Excellence grant supported Delaware State University (DSU) to increase student success and foster faculty development in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. One component of this grant has provided students, particularly early sequence (freshman and sophomores), the opportunity to participate in a lab internship program. This program has provided students with access to vital research experience and removed some of the barriers for student opportunities, particularly for minority and first-generation students, in STEM fields. The internship program is rooted in principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion and is a cost-effective model for increasing experiential opportunities for STEM students. This paper will share the logistics and inclusive parameters of the program, survey data from student and faculty mentors, as well as highlight the benefits of incorporating an early experiential learning opportunity for students in STEM fields. The paper demonstrates the steps to create a low-cost lab program and how future internships experiences can be designed with diversity, equity, and inclusion as core principles.
Teaching Through Polemical Spaces at a Florida Public University: Against the backdrop of Florida state politics and attempts to ban CRT and DEI from higher education settings, the authors embedded an intense reflection component and an assessment to gauge the efficacy and perceived educational value of a trip to the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice.
Every year, the University of West Florida Kugelman Honors Program takes a day trip to Montgomery, AL, to visit the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. As a program, we invest heavily in this experience to get students outside of the classroom and grapple with difficult histories that inform our regional and national communities today. Against the backdrop of Florida state politics and attempts to ban CRT and DEI from higher education settings, we embedded an intense reflection component and an assessment to gauge the efficacy and perceived value of the trip from a pedagogical perspective. Here, we provide background on the experience, review the scholarship on critical reflection in applied learning, review the research design, and present the results of the analysis
Think Globally, Travel Locally: Doctoral Program Travel for Inquiry, Equity, and Social Justice
Real-world experience is often considered subordinate to academic learning at the doctoral level. Lessons from experiential learning at the doctoral level show higher education can be equity-minded and focused on the needs of learners without sacrificing depth and quality even at the highest levels of educational attainment. Doctoral faculty developed a travel experience providing doctoral students the opportunity to better understand themselves as leaders, broaden their understanding of the “other,” and bring current issues and trends to life through experiential learning provided by traveling together for a fleeting time and a short distance. The doctoral program is seeing the byproducts of the experience in the inquiry of doctoral students focused on issues of diversity, inequity, and sustainability intended to improve educational outcomes in our nation. While the potential for inequity and disparity to divide the cohort was real, providing the opportunity for all to participate with minimum struggles associated with group travel allowed the cohort to form a bond that has provided a greater level of peer support through the dissertation process. Travel activities and components that led to the success of the experience are discussed
Religion Generates Individual and Social Control: Focusing On Values, Beliefs, Morals, Sex, and Marriage
In today’s society one must ask if religion is used for individual and social control. Prevalent historical arguments include one can do no wrong if they follow god’s ideologies, god is persistent in the mind, and that religions form boundaries for those who abide by these guidelines. It is argued that religion is a basis of social control and factors that are affected include values, beliefs, morals, sex and marriage
