The Smallest Bipartite Intrinsically Knotted Graph
We use the restoring method of Kim, Mattman, and Oh to prove that the Heawood graph is the only bipartite graph with 21 edges that is intrinsically knotted
Areas of Generalized Koch Snowflakes
In this work, we consider the areas of the regions enclosed by generalized Koch curves. We derived formulas for several classes of generalized Koch snowflakes. We also obtained a formula that can be used for computing areas of more complex snowflakes
Illuminating a Broken Mirror: The Light of Grief
Tash Deacon is a care-experienced first-generation scholar and recent graduate of Durham University. Throughout her life, she has been no stranger to strong feelings of guilt which manifested far before she could find the words to label them. She wished to venture beyond her home city but learnt that meant leaving the people she loves behind with only the lessons they taught her to carry her forward. Juggling that pain is still a fine art. She swears one day she will show her Mum how wide the world really is
In the Wild
Kaylee Rodas is a first-generation college student who did not understand the term “first-gen” until after high school. After enrolling in a first-gen focused study abroad program in Durham, England, her circle was expanded as she was introduced to new people, places, and cultures. Throughout the experience, Rodas encountered common first-gen challenges, including culture shock, imposter syndrome, and survivor’s guilt. She writes this piece hoping it will connect with other first-gen students who may be struggling with these feelings at home or abroad
The Intersection of HIPs, Experiential Learning, and Equity in Higher Education: A values-based contribution to defining experiential education
Experiential Learning (EXL) and High Impact Practices (HIPs) as concepts and as practices have a great deal in common but are not the same nor are they mutually exclusive. In this paper, we review the intersection and overlap of these two concepts in the context of higher education from the literature and from discussions among faculty and administrators at a Society for Experiential Education conference. Participants discussed the definitions of each concept at their home institutions and generated visual models to represent ways in which EXL and HIP activities overalp. The authors propose two alternative models of conceptualization where learning activities simultaneously exist on continuums of impact and experientiality. We also consider gaps of inclusivity and equity in HIPs and EXL from the literature and participant experiences. Finally the authors make suggestions for how institutions might scale HIPs and EXL in ways that welcome and include all students with equity of access
The ROAR Internship Program: Paid employment as a strategy for engagement
The ROAR program at Jackson State University is an integrated strategy for Re-envisioning Orientation, Advising and Retention. Continuing JSU students apply for paid internships in which they co-design the next cohort’s First-Year Experience. During the academic year they lead brainstorming sessions, develop detailed programming, and pitch to faculty – developing deeper connections to the university as well as transferable workforce skills
