Influence of Fire and Post-Fire Management on Fungal Diversity in Chaparral Soils

    Get PDF
The chaparral burns every 40-70 years. Fire affects physical, chemical, and biological processes in the soil. In May 2014, the Cocos fire burned ~2000 acres of chaparral behind CSUSM. Post-fire, portions of the burned slope were either hydroseeded or left to recover naturally. This unique situation allows for analysis of fire effects and post-fire management on belowground fungal communities. A majority of fungi remained unclassified. Primary classifications consisted of Basidiomycota and Ascomycota, two common phyla of Fungi. Further classifications of Basidiomycota included Agaricomycetes (a class of cup-shaped fungi) and Agaricales (the common gilled mushroom). Further classifications of Ascomycota included Erysiphaceae (a family of fungi comprised of powdery mildew that is parasitic to leaves of plants) and Leotiomycetes, a class of fungi that cause a variety of plant diseases

The Effects of Fire and Post-fire Management on Microbial Abundance and Enzymatic Activity

The ecological effects of fire and post-fire management are poorly understood. Microbial biomass and enzymatic activity were measured to assess the effects of fire and post-fire management on microbial processes. We hypothesized that microbial abundance and enzymatic activity would differ across burned sites due to different post-fire treatments and that enzymatic activity would be positively correlated with each other and microbial abundance. Soil was sampled from unburned (U), naturally recovering burned (N), and hydroseeded burned (H) chaparral sites behind CSUSM. NAGase and Phosphatase activities were measured. Microbial biomass was assessed using chloroform fumigation and extraction. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and regression analyses. Both NAGase and Phosphatase activities were higher in the unburned site (Figs 1 and 2). This may imply that overall enzymatic activity is still significantly lower in burned sites even 5 years post-fire. Hydroseeding had little to no effect. Microbial C was significantly higher in the Hydroseeding site. This may be due to the plant species and/or the organic matter and fertilizer in the hydroseed mix. Enzymatic activity did not correlate with microbial C, implying a difference in microbial composition across sites. NAGase and Phosphatase were positively correlated, implying that they are driven by similar factors. Enzyme activity was positively correlated with soil C and N, implying N and C co-limitation

Neoliberalismo e identidades de género en Las viudas de los jueves de Claudia Piñeiro

Thursday Night Widows (2005) by Argentine writer Claudia Piñeiro presents the story of a group of six families who take advantage of economic prosperity to move to Los Altos de las Cascadas, a gated community. Only successful men live in Las Cascadas, whose characterization corresponds to what R.W. Connell has classified as hegemonic masculinities. In contrast, the wives of these magnates are dedicated to maintaining the home and doing charitable works. When the economic crisis of 2001 ensued, the fenced-in neighborhood system broke down and destabilized gender identities. Based on Masculinities by R.W. Connell, Consumers and Citizens: Globalization and Multicultural Conflicts by Néstor García Canclini and Los que ganaron: la vida en los countries y barrios privados by Maristella Svampa, this study analyzes how the implementation of the neoliberal model during the presidency of Carlos Menem (1989-1999) affects the construction of masculinities and femininities, where the neoliberal model drives men to commit suicide and condemns women to suffer the consequences of gender-based violence.

This is a paper written by a history undergraduate. This paper was the culminating product of a summer research grant that allowed the student to delve deep into sources and write up her analysis under the direction of a faculty mentor, Professor Stephen Lewis. Though formatted slightly differently for this journal, this paper used Kate L. Turabian\u27s Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, which is typical of papers in this discipline
