A TEXTOGRAPHY OF THE COMPLEX PROCESS OF LEARNING AND TEACHING ONLINE
In this paper, I present an attempt similar to what Swales (1998) did when he wrote a textography of a university building. A textographer looks for pieces of paper in which he finds ways of life. The difference is this is meant to be a textography of my own complex path as an online learner and teacher. By complex, I do not mean complicated, rather I analyze the data through a Complexity Theory lens, embracing interconnectedness and dynamism. Complex systems and Applied Linguistics have been gradually seen together in publications since a seminal article by Larsen-Freeman (1997). References in other areas of knowledge also serve as my theoretical background. The features of complex systems (non-linearity, unpredictability, sensitiveness to initial conditions, openness, feedback sensitiveness, adaptability) are exemplified with textual samples. Metaphorically, I am the textographer searching through my lifelong online learning and teaching portfolio for clues which may reveal the intricacies of this pat
A CORPUS STUDY ON BRAZILIAN LEARNERS` USAGE OF ENGLISH PHRASAL VERBS
The present study attempts at using corpora to determine if the most common phrasal verbs used by Brazilian learners of English are the same as the most commonly used by native speakers; whether there is evidence of avoidance of phrasal verb usage by learners in Brazil; and finally if the most common meanings used by Brazilian learners match the most common meanings found in native-speaker language. The tools used for this research were a Brazilian learner corpus called CoMAprend and the toolkit AntConc. Results showed that there was significant avoidance of phrasal verb usage by the learners and that a large number of phrasal verbs found in the corpus was not within the group of most common phrasal verbs native speakers use. In spite of this a good part of the phrasal verbs` meanings appearing in the learner corpus were listed as the most usual in the Bank of English
A SINGULARIDADE NARRATIVA DE LOVE AND LONGING IN BOMBAY
O objetivo deste artigo é discutir a singularidade literária de Love and Longing in Bombay (1997), do escritor indiano Vikram Chandra, levando em conta a maneira como o autor relaciona os gêneros literários da tradição inglesa com a cultura hindu através do conceito de darshana, ou visão de mund
OF MIMICRY AND WOMAN: A FEMINIST POSTCOLONIAL READING OF WIDE SARGASSO SEA AND THE BIGGEST MODERN WOMAN OF THE WORLD
Feminist and postcolonial studies have shown a similar concern with the production of new and more empowering subjectivities for those historically cast as subaltern in androcentric western contexts. In literature, as in criticism, concepts such as revision and subversion receive unprecedented attention as discourse, and hence narrative, begins to be seen as the very site where identity and relations of power are constructed and negotiated. Among the many women writers who sought to counterbalance the white maleness of the literary canon by giving colonized women a voice and a (hi)story are writers as diverse as the Dominican-born English writer Jean Rhys and the Canadian novelist Susan Swan. In their major fictional works, respectively Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) and The Biggest Modern Woman of the World (1983), they challenge the tradition of both literature and history by providing secondary or marginal women characters with a story of their own. Based primarily on the concepts of subversion and rearticulation proposed by Judith Butler and Homi Bhabha, this paper investigates and compares the strategies of representation employed by Rhys and Swan in the above novels with special attention to the relationship between the protagonists’ bodily experiences and the countries and cultures they stand for
The birth of tragedy and primeval rhapsody: the dionisian myth as resignified in nietzsche\u27s and nassar\u27s texts
This paper discusses the Dionysian energy present in the novel Primeval Rhapsody (Lavoura Arcaica, 1975), by Raduan Nassar, making reference to Luiz Fernando Carvalho\u27s homonymous film (2001), whenever relevant. We analyze some passages that reveal André’s and Ana’s “Dionysian sensitivity”, as well as other ones which foreground instances of the mother’s excess of affection, showing her unequivocal preference for André, and of the father’s slackening of his rigid personality when “befuddled with wine” – the Dionysian drink. However, we tend to privilege the dialogue between the Dionysian myth as resignified in Friedrich Nietzsche\u27s The Birth of Tragedy and the visual narratives of Ana\u27s two dances which disturb the protagonist and the traditional celebrations of a Lebanese community in the countryside of São Paulo
GLOBALIZATION, CULTURE AND THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN BRAZIL
This paper aims at presenting some considerations about the terms globalization, culture and multiliteracy used in the teaching of English as a foreign language in Brazil. I begin the article by revisiting some of the ideas spread by McLuhan about the Global Village and, throughout the paper I make a relation with the contemporary view of globalization, communities, enter-spaces and literacy. I also go through some data to illustrate possible creations of enter-spaces by emphasizing the role of using cultural topics in the teaching of foreign languages
