WORLD WAR II AND VIETNAM WAR IN POETRY: CHARLES SIMIC AND YUSEF KOMUNYAKAA AS EYEWITNESSES
This article aims to bring a discussion related to eyewitness experiences in the works of two North American poets, Charles Simic and Yusef Komunyakaa, during war times. Simic\u27s contact with the destruction of the Second World War serves as a background that inherently connects itself with his essays and poems. The traumatic experiences of devastation and violence remain as pivotal themes in the search for the "unimportant events" that constitute a history focused on the journey of the individual. Komunyakaa is linked to Simic by the horrifying circumstances of war but differentiated by decades in his experiences in the Vietnam War. As a soldier, his participation in the combat zone allows him to have an eyewitness perspective of the fragility of life
CHOICE OF LANGUAGE LEARNING STRATEGIES BY BRAZILIAN EFLers: GENDER DIFFERENCES AND CONTEXTUAL VARIABLES
Departing from cross-cultural studies on the language behavior of men and women, this study examines how gender relates to choice of language learning strategies (LLS) and to contextual variables. To do so, it collects data from 128 male and 186 female EFLers enrolled in three language institutes in southeast Brazil by means of Oxford’s Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) and analyze them statistically and in the light of knowledge of the Brazilian context. Results seem to reflect an interaction between contextual variables and gender-related choice of strategies. Males in the study reported using 21 of the SILL strategies with higher frequency than females. Out of these strategies, several are social and affective, a finding that goes against the literature that relates these strategies to behavior typically associated with female learners

THE GROTESQUE FEMALE BODY IN THE PASSION OF NEW EVE AND THE BIGGEST MODERN WOMAN OF THE WORLD
The female body has been the focus of many literary works, especially in recent times, in which new roles for women have been broadly discussed. In an attempt to free the female body from its cultural constraints, many authors have resorted to the grotesque with its excesses and fluid boundaries with society, as originally defined by Bakhtin. Two contemporary novels by female authors are especially relevant in this respect: The Passion of New Eve, published in 1977, by Angela Carter, and The Biggest Modern Woman of the World, published in 1983, by Susan Swan. After presenting some theoretical aspects related to the grotesque, mainly from Mikhail Bakhtin (1999) and Mary Russo (1994), this article will discuss how Carter’s and Swan’s novels deal with “freak” characters and with larger than life female protagonists who represent womanhood beyond the limits of conventional femininity
CONTEMPORARY MYTH CONSTRUCTION IN THE “YELLOW WOMAN”
Native American identity reconstruction, along with other ethnic and minority groups, conflicts with poststructuralist theories of deconstructionism. Derrida‟s famous quote “There is nothing beyond the text” (1976, p. 158) illustrates the notion of how everything can be analyzed as a narrative. As a consequence, important issues to Native American writing such as myth and identity become only constructions, which weakens their claim for Native American politics. Leslie Silko‟s short story “Yellow Woman” manages to agree with a deconstructionism point of view when it reconstructs a traditional folktale in the present; at the same time, it also affirms a Native American identity, which reinforces the need to reconstruct and reposition an indigenous representation as belonging to a history of traditions
“COMFORTABLE FOSSILIZATION” CHINESE EFL LEARNER’S ACQUISITION AND USE OF FORMULAIC SEQUENCES IN L2 WRITING
The present study set out to investigate the knowledge and use of formulaic sequences in Chinese EFL learner‟s L2 writing. Adopting Alison Wray‟s definition (Wray, 2000, p.465), formulaic sequence was operationalized as “idioms, collocations and sentence frames (including connectives)”. Authentic samples written by 16 advanced EFL writers in China were collected and analyzed with a view to probing into their knowledge and use of formulaic sequences. The results indicated that a strong influence of these EFL learners‟ native language (L1) affected their knowledge and use of formulaic sequences in L2 writing. The study argues that such over-reliance on these incorrect formulaic sequences is likely to become what Skehan and Foster (2001) have called “comfortable fossilization”. Implications of these results for EFL writing instructions are discussed
IRONIA E PARÓDIA EM “THE BIRTHDAY OF THE INFANTA”, DE OSCAR WILDE
The birthday of the Infanta”. The birthday of the Infanta”.
