DEFAMILIARISING SUFISM IN THE ISLAMIC-MALAY TRADITION OF POETRY: A TEXTUAL AND HISTORICAL ANALYSIS ON SYAIR BURUNG PUNGGUK THROUGH ISLAMIC REGIONAL STUDIES

    Get PDF
Syair Burung Pungguk is one of the classical Malay poems depicting the spiritual and existential struggle of humanity through the symbolism of longing and solitude. Through the lens of Islamic World Area Studies, this text can be read as a representation of the transformation of Islamic values rooted in the local experiences of the Malay society in Southeast Asia. This study applies a hermeneutic-cultural approach with the principle of defamiliarization to reinterpret the poem within the Islamic cultural context of the region. The analysis was conducted on the translated version Syair Burung Pungguk by Arief Rahman and Didik Purwanto (2021, National Library Press) by considering the textual side through the concept of defamiliarization combined with the perspective of Islamic Regional Studies. The findings suggest that the symbolism of the owl and the moon reflects the unique Malay-Islamic religiosity centered on mystical longing for the Divine, reaffirming that literature serves as an arena where universal Islamic teachings are aesthetically and culturally localized. Thus, this poem is not merely a literary artifact but a site of encounter between the universal principles of Islam and the cultural expressions of the Malay world rooted in Sufi sensibility

Chemical representations and the connections among macroscopic, sub-microscopic, and symbolic levels are fundamental to meaningful chemistry learning. However, the quality and coherence of these representations in instructional materials often determine how effectively students construct conceptual understanding. This study aimed to investigate the types and interconnections of chemical representations related to corrosion presented in widely used general chemistry textbooks. A qualitative content analysis was conducted on five textbooks using an adapted framework from Gkitzia, which included the type of representation (C1), interpretation of surface features (C2), relatedness to the text (C3), caption quality (C4), and degree of correlation across multiple representations (C5). A total of 40 corrosion-related representations were identified. The analysis showed that symbolic representations were the most frequently used, although textbooks generally portrayed corrosion through macroscopic, real-world examples. Eight sets of multiple representations were found to demonstrate adequate coherence among macroscopic, sub-microscopic, and symbolic levels, effectively illustrating both the corrosion process and its prevention. Overall, the five textbooks presented the concept of corrosion with reasonable alignment across representational forms. These findings contribute to the improvement of chemistry education by informing educators and textbook authors about the strengths and limitations of current representational practices. The results also offer empirical support for implementing multiple-representation-based instruction to enhance students’ conceptual understanding and ability to visualize and interpret corrosion phenomena

The salafiyah pesantren movement in Banten: Resistance and negotiation for institutional recognition

    Get PDF
This article analyzes the dynamics of the socio-religious movement of the Salafiyah Islamic Boarding School (Majelis Pesantren Salafiyah--MPS) in Banten in fighting for institutional recognition. Using the perspective of resource mobilization theory and framing analysis, this research explores the forms of resistance and negotiation carried out by MPS in response to marginalization by government policy. Research findings show that MPS mobilizes cultural resources based on religious values and the identity of Salafiyah Islamic boarding schools as a strategy to fight against discrimination in educational policies. Through the formation of formal organizations, collective action, and policy advocacy, MPS succeeded in influencing the birth of Regional Regulation No. 7 of 2012 concerning the Implementation of Education in Banten, which includes Salafiyah Islamic boarding schools within the framework of recognized educational institutions. This research contributes to an understanding of how Islamic boarding school-based religious social movements strive for institutional recognition through a combination of cultural resistance and political negotiation strategies

The COVID-19 pandemic generated profound economic disruptions that affected Indonesia’s trade dynamics and industrial stability. In response, the Indonesian government implemented a series of economic policies aimed at mitigating these challenges, including the adoption of trade remedy policy. This study analyses Indonesia’s international trade policy during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the imposition of Anti-Dumping Duties (BMAD) on Hot Rolled Coil of Other Alloy (HRC Alloy) products imported from China. This study uses qualitative methods employing the theoretical lens of economic nationalism. This research explores the underlying rationale, implementation process, and implications of the policy for the domestic steel industry. The findings reveal that the imposition of BMAD was designed to protect Indonesia’s national steel industry from the adverse effects of dumping practices that had significantly harmed local producers. Moreover, this policy demonstrates a broader state strategy to secure industrial resilience and promote long-term economic self-sufficiency amid global uncertainty. By safeguarding domestic production capacity, the Indonesian government not only aimed to stabilise its industrial sector during the crisis but also reinforced its commitment to building a more independent and competitive national economy. Overall, this research highlights the relevance of economic nationalism in shaping Indonesia’s trade policy responses during periods of economic crisis

    Get PDF
This study is based on the importance of preserving the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad SAW through tahfizh activities, particularly in the Hifzhil Hadith branch of the 40th West Sumatra Provincial Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur\u27an (MTQ) in 2023. The main issue of this study is the diversity of tahfizh methods used by MTQ participants. The purpose of this study is to examine the hadith tahfizh methods used by participants, analyze their strengths and weaknesses, and examine the relationship between these methods and the concept of tahammul wa al-adā’ al-ḥadis. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data were obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation of the participants, trainers, and organizers of the 40th West Sumatra MTQ in 2023. The results of this study indicate that there are 11 methods of hadith memorization used by participants in the Hifzhil Hadith category at the 40th West Sumatra Provincial MTQ in 2023, namely the talaqqi, tikrar, qira\u27ah, talqin, muroja\u27ah, tafahhum, random, grouping A\u27la narrators, kitabah, memorizing per sentence, and applying the content of the hadith. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. The relationship between the hadith memorization methods and the concept of tahammul wa al-ada’ al-ḥadis is functional, not structural. This means that not all memorization methods are directly rooted in the classical tahammul wa al-ada’ system, but some methods still have relevance in the spirit and basic principles of hadith narration
