SOLVING THE FORMULA: AN ANALYSIS OF MYSTERY STRUCTURE ON MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

This article discusses Kenneth Branagh\u27s film Murder on the Orient Express (2017) through John G. Cawelti\u27s popular formula theory, particularly in the context of the mystery genre. This study aims to examine how the narrative structure typical of the detective genre—consisting of the stages of crime, investigation, and resolution—is adapted in the medium of film. By utilizing Cawelti\u27s theory, which emphasizes the combination of convention and innovation, this analysis shows that the film retains the main elements of the mystery formula while introducing aesthetic and moral variations that reflect contemporary values. The use of cinematic techniques such as temporal manipulation, limited perspective, and mise-en-scène enhances the audience\u27s experience in following the investigation. Additionally, the film\u27s theme of alternative justice adds a complex ethical dimension to Agatha Christie\u27s classic narrative. This study confirms that Murder on the Orient Express is not merely a passive adaptation but a critical and relevant reinterpretation of the genre formula within the context of modern popular culture

Enhancing Sharia Financial Inclusion in Rural Areas: Integrating Service Quality, Technological Innovation, and Financial Literacy in Baitul Maal Wat Tamwil

Sharia financial inclusion (SFI) plays a crucial role in promoting equitable economic development, particularly in rural areas where access to formal financial services remains limited. This study examines the integrated effects of service quality, financial literacy, and technological innovation on SFI among active Baitul Maal wat Tamwil (BMT) customers in rural South Kalimantan, Indonesia, while assessing whether socio-economic status moderates these relationships. Using survey data and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), the findings show that financial literacy and service quality have significant positive effects on SFI, underscoring the importance of customers’ capability readiness and the quality of institutional interaction in fostering participation. Technological innovation shows no significant direct effect, suggesting that digital or technological initiatives alone may be insufficient without adequate literacy and service support. Additionally, socio-economic status does not significantly moderate the proposed relationships, indicating that the positive roles of literacy and service quality are relatively consistent across socio-economic groups. The study contributes by offering an integrated empirical model of key drivers of sharia financial inclusion in rural Islamic microfinance and provides practical insights for BMTs and policymakers to prioritize service improvement and financial literacy development to strengthen sustainable SFI

Padepokan Giri Harja is a prominent center for the preservation and development of Wayang Golek, a traditional Sundanese puppet art, in West Java. Founded by the legendary puppeteer Abeng Sunarya, the institution has evolved into an artistic hub that fosters cultural education across generations. This study explores the significant role of Pujaran Giri Harja 2, led by puppeteer Awan Kartanda Suanda Ade Kosasih, a non-lineal disciple who has been officially acknowledged within the Sunarya lineage of cultural transmission. Using historical and oral history methodologies, the research investigates informal learning processes, spiritual and cultural values, and the dynamics of succession within the Giri Harja community. Findings reveal that Giri Harja does not limit its teachings to biological heirs but extends its legacy to dedicated disciples who embody the spiritual and cultural ethos of Sundanese puppetry. The pedagogy employed is experiential and rooted in daily practice, strengthening intergenerational bonds through emotional closeness and lived experience. Symbolic mechanisms, such as verbal certification (non-formal “diplomas”), serve as markers of skill recognition. The success of Giri Harja in extending its influence nationally and internationally is further supported by an inclusive and adaptive succession strategy. This study affirms that Pujaran Giri Harja 2 stands as a tangible representation of an open and spiritually rooted cultural inheritance system resilient to temporal changes.Padepokan Giri Harja merupakan pusat pelestarian dan pengembangan seni Wayang Golek yang berpengaruh di Jawa Barat. QRIS Adoption in West Java: Evidence from A Muslim-Majority Region

    No full text
The unprecedented growth of digital payments has made the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS), introduced by Bank Indonesia, a crucial layer in Indonesia’s cashless infrastructure. As a Muslim-majority region with a high number of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), West Java is an appropriate context for understanding the implementation of QRIS. This study synthesizes the existing literature on QRIS and digital payment adoption through a systematic review of UTAUT- and UTAUT2-based studies. The results demonstrate that performance expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, habit, and trust are most often identified as determinants of behavioral intention and usage behavior, while evidence on age and gender differences remains mixed. The review also reveals limited attention to sub-national and Muslim-majority regional contexts and conceptually integrates technology acceptance, trust–risk, and socio-religious perspectives to provide a more contextual understanding of QRIS adoption. These findings offer implications for future research and policy-making on regional digital payment ecosystems

    No full text
In the context of global secondary education, rapid technological advancements have revolutionized learning environments. Educators are increasingly integrating immersive and interactive tools to better engage digital-native students. Augmented Reality (AR), when combined with gamified learning platforms, has shown great potential to boost student participation and comprehension. This study aims to analyze and compare the learning needs of Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs), including Islamic boarding schools, and Junior High School (JHS) students regarding AR-based digital learning materials integrated with the Quizizz platform. Using a descriptive quantitative design, the study employed data triangulation through questionnaires, classroom observations, and interviews to obtain a comprehensive view of students’ needs and preferences. The results indicate that both MTs and JHS students share similar needs for AR-based learning materials, particularly in interactive visualization, immediate feedback, and gamification features, although differences were found in specific interaction and feedback preferences. In conclusion, integrating AR technology with Quizizz can create more engaging and adaptive learning environments for secondary students. The study implies that Islamic education institutions can effectively adopt AR-based digital learning to support active learning, strengthen student engagement, and align instructional practices with contemporary technological developments

Indonesia has a high vulnerability to disasters, but the integration of disaster education in the curriculum is often still sporadic so that it has an impact on students\u27 low science literacy. Conventional methods are considered inadequate, so a transition to a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model is needed which is strengthened with a Deep Learning approach. This study aims to analyze and synthesize the current scientific literature landscape regarding the effectiveness of PBL integration with Deep Learning in disaster mitigation science learning. Using  the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method which refers to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, this study examines empirical articles from the Scopus database for the period 2015–2025 which were analyzed with the help of VOSviewer. The results show that the current research trend is dominated by the social science education domain with a focus on Active Learning to improve higher level thinking skills (HOTS), but significant methodological gaps were found in the form of a lack of studies that integrate PBL and Deep Learning syntaxin its entirety in the context of science. This study concludes the need for a new conceptual framework that synergizes problem-solving structures with deep information processing to build adaptive and disaster-responsive science literacy

Peer Mediation, Emotional Substitution, and the Ambivalence of Care: Informal Care Practices in Indonesian Child Welfare Institutions

    No full text
This study examines peer mediation practices carried out by foster older siblings at CWI Aisyiyah Kasih Ibu Bengkulu as a response to the limitations of formal caregiving structures in addressing conflicts among children within an institutional care setting. Drawing on attachment theory, this research critically analyzes how informal caregiving mechanisms operate within the institution and generate ambivalent consequences. Using a qualitative approach and a phenomenological method, the researchers collected data through in-depth interviews with 18 informants (4 foster older siblings, 8 foster children, 1 foster mother, and 5 institutional administrators) and observation. The findings reveal three main results. First, peer mediation functions as a mechanism for restructuring children’s social relations through behavioral modeling and moral guidance, so it not only resolves conflicts but also transforms them into spaces for social learning. Second, the emotional support provided by foster older siblings operates as a substitute attachment system that compensates for the limited emotional capacity within the formal caregiving structure. Third, although peer mediation effectively creates harmony and relational stability, it simultaneously produces ambivalence because it positions foster older siblings in a dual-burden role as both recipients and providers of psychological support. This study affirms that peer mediation within child welfare institutions represents the ambivalence of institutional caregiving in Indonesia: it provides practical solutions to everyday conflicts while simultaneously revealing structural gaps in the distribution of emotional labor and formal caregiving capacity. This study contributes to the development of the sociology of child welfare by offering a critical reading of informal caregiving practices as multidimensional processes layered with power relations and emotional dynamics within the child welfare system

    No full text
Collagen and gelatin are widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries, yet their halal status remains a persistent concern for many products on the market. This study aimed to optimize the extraction and isolation of halal collagen and gelatin from Manyung fish bone waste, an abundant and low-cost Indonesian resource. Collagen was extracted at varying acid concentrations and reaction times, while gelatin was produced under eight treatment conditions varying in acid type, processing temperature, and extraction duration. Collagen and gelatin were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, the resulting gelatin was qualitatively examined using potassium dichromate and trinitrophenol solutions, which are commonly applied in Indonesia’s pharmaceutical industry. The FTIR spectrum of collagen showed absorption peaks corresponding to amide A, amide I, and amide II, whereas amide B and amide III bands were not detected. The highest collagen yield (4.4%) was obtained using 0.75 M acetic acid with a 5-day reaction time. For gelatin, FTIR confirmed the presence of characteristic amide A, amide B, amide I, amide II, and amide III bands. The optimal gelatin extraction was achieved with treatment 8, which involved immersion in 4% HCl, followed by 4% H₃PO₄, and extraction at 80°C for 6 hours, yielding 3.74%. Overall, these findings demonstrate that Manyung fish bone waste is a promising alternative source of halal collagen and gelatin, with potential applications in both food and pharmaceutical manufacturing

Implementation of Islamic Parenting: Collaboration between Community Service Program and Schools in Enhancing the Role of Parents Based on the Qur\u27an and Hadith

    No full text
This study examines the implementation of Islamic parenting as a strategy to strengthen the role of parents in children’s education through collaboration between Community Service Program (KKN) students and schools. Islamic parenting is defined as a value-based approach rooted in moral, spiritual, and educational principles, positioning parents as the child’s first school. The study adopts the SISDAMAS (Participatory Community Development System) approach, which emphasizes community involvement in all stages of planning, implementation, and evaluation. The research site was TK Al-Kamilah, RW 08 Dusun 3, Kampung Bojong, Mekarsari Village, involving parents, teachers, KKN students, and local leaders. Findings indicate that the Islamic parenting seminar successfully enhanced parents’ awareness and skills in child-rearing, strengthened collaboration between families and schools, and produced Qur’an- and Hadith-based parenting modules that can be used continuously. The main challenges identified were parents’ limited understanding, the influence of digital media, and time constraints in conducting effective parenting practices. Practical implications suggest the need for regular parenting forums, mentoring programs for young families, and the integration of parenting initiatives into official village development agendas. This study contributes theoretically by integrating 21st-century parenting theories with Islamic parenting principles, and practically by offering a collaborative model that strengthens the role of families in children’s education

The Spectacle of the Other: The Politics of Apologetic Representation of Islam in Social Media

In today’s digital era, Islamic apologetics has moved away from traditional theological debates and toward more dynamic and widely publicized presentations.  Social media now acts as a stage for figures like Bang Zuma to defend their beliefs with bold moves and identity-driven narratives. This mirrors Stuart Hall’s concept of the politics of representation, where other groups are cast as symbolic rivals in cultural struggles over meaning and power. Using Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis, this study looks at two of Bang Zuma’s YouTube videos through three angles: macrostructure (big-picture ideological themes), superstructure (how arguments are built), and microstructure (language and style). The results show a symbolic battle that asserts Islam’s dominance while discrediting others. Through deliberate word choice, repeated religious symbols, and a showy communication style, faith becomes a moral performance mixing theology with spectacle. In the end, digital Islamic apologetics works both to defend belief and to put on an ideological show that upholds religious authority while deepening social and religious divides, showing how religion adapts to media logic where representation turns into a contest for meaning and identity
