CENTIMETRY IN PATIENTS WITH CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES
Cardiovascular disease affects those affected negatively. In our country, two out of every three people die from cardiovascular diseases.. Centimetry is an easily applicable method of measurement. The relationship between certain higher values measured by centimeter and the presence of diseases of the cardiovascular system has been established. The aim of this report is to present the measured values by centimeter in patients after coronary artery stent insertion and to analyze the results comparing them with literature data.Materials and methods. We have used a centimeter. We measured the waist and hip circumferences as well as the height of the patients. Based on the obtained values in cm, we calculated the ratios: waist/hip, waist/height and abdominal volume index (AVI).Results and discussion. We used the statistical package Graph Pad Prism 3.0 for the processing of results. We have calculated the mean and standard deviation for the studied indicators. We studied 30 patients after insertion of the coronary arteries. The mean values of the hip measurement were 113.05±8.19 cm. The mean values of the waist measurement were 96.67±8.47 cm. The mean waist/hipratio was 0.86±0.04. The mean waist/height ratio was 0.56±0.04. The calculated mean abdominal volume index (AVI) values were 18.85 ±3.19.Conclusion. Circulation calculations and the ratios derived from them can be used to assess the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Timely detection of elevated values would allow adequate lifestyle modification measures to be taken to counteract the risk of cardiovascular disease development
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND INDIVIDUAL APPROACH IN LONG-TERM CARE PLANNING FOR PATIENTS WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS IN MIDWIVES IN HOSPITALS
The work of the midwives is highly demanding and responsible, as well as associated with significant load on the musculoskeletal system. The aim of the study was to follow the frequency and localization of musculoskeletal disorders and diagnosed diseases of the musculoskeletal system among midwives working in hospitals. Methods The study included 176 midwives with an average age of 48.9 ± 13.1 years working in hospitals in the city of Sofia. An adapted questionnaire was applied to collect information for musculoskeletal symptoms and physician-diagnosed diseases. Data were processed with the statistical package SPSS 20.0.Results and Discussion The incidence of musculoskeletal complaints was high. The most common complaints were in the lower back (67.7%), followed by the back (61.1%), neck (56.3%) and shoulders (50.3%). Diagnosed diseases of the musculoskeletal system were consistent with the complaints. The analysis of the data showed that poor working conditions, frequent work in uncomfortable working postures with bending, twisting and stretching increased the frequency of musculoskeletal complaints.Conclusion The results point to further study of the ergonomic characteristics of workplaces and work movements and the organization of the work process in order to improve working conditions and protect the health of midwives working in hospitals.

Emotions accompany us in our everyday actions and especially in language communication. In linguistic research, the emphasis usually falls on the linguistic means by which meaning is conveyed. The attitudinal, and especially the emotional, side of our communication is usually underestimated. This has changed in recent years when the attention of researchers from various fields has turned to the role of attitudes and emotions in language learning. Research has unequivocally shown that among the many different factors that influence foreign language acquisition, emotions play a key role. Positive or negative, they directly influence the enhancement or reduction of motivation and, consequently, the success of language learning. This paper focuses on the role of emotional factors on motivation and language acquisition success in order to find more effective approaches to learning
Alcohol consumption among students of health specialties
Aim: The aim of the present study is to determine the prevalence and specific characteristics of the behavior related to alcohol consumption among students of health specialties in Bulgaria. Methods: A survey was conducted among students of Bulgarian-language health specialties at a medical university in Bulgaria. A convenience sample was used and the questionnaire, prepared as a Google form, was distributed with the assistance of the student council through the internet platform of the student’s organization. The following characteristics were analyzed: frequency of alcohol consumption, frequency of getting drunk, and motives for alcohol consumption by the participants.Results: A total of 570 students from 17 majors at the university participated in the study. The sample represented 10% of all Bulgarian-speaking students in the university. Females predominated, 88.6% (n = 505), and the mean age of participants was 24 years (SD ±7.65). A statistically significant difference was found in the prevalence of alcohol consumption by gender—76.9% of all men and 50.1% of women reported drinking alcohol. One third of the respondents (34%) got drunk at least once in the last month. The students from the specialties medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy reported a higher frequency of alcohol consumption.Conclusion: The results of the study reveal the need for action and policy aiming to change attitudes, culture, and environment that tolerate the permanent establishment of unhealthy habits and behaviors among future health professionals
The Bonebridge system – Our clinical experience /Case report/
Introduction: Bone conduction implants are a standard treatment option for patients with conductive or mixed, hearing loss. The Bonebridge system was introduced by MED-EL in 2012, and two years after its debut, it was used in more than 200 centers worldwide (6). For the first time the Bonebridge system was implanted in Bulgaria in 2015 by associated professor P. Rouev. The main audiological criteria for placement is conductive hearing loss, which is caused by atresia of the auditory canal or diseases of the middle ear with preserved bone conduction (below 45 dB), as well as unilateral hearing loss above 70 dB (contralateral hearing loss not more than 20 dB). The system does not penetrate the skin and consists of an internal part - an implant, which is placed completely under the skin, and an external part - a processor. The acoustic signal from the environment is transformed into mechanical vibrations that are transmitted to the mastoid bone. The expected results are an improved hearing threshold and better hearing in noisy environments.Methods: Our clinical experience with the Bonebridge system is based on three operated patients aged between 56 and 73 years. All three patients had evidence of bilateral conductive hearing loss. Here we present one of these cases.Results: Test results showed significant improvement in hearing sensitivity especially in frequencies round 1000 Hz.Conclusions: Bone conduction implants such as the Bonebridge system are an excellent treatment option for patients with bilateral conductive deafness. Bonebridge has good hearing results, relative simplicity, and low rate of complications. Experience has shown that the Bonebridge system is easy to use and highly reliable. The use of Bonebridge conduction implant system leads to a significant improvement in the quality of life
A historical review of the International Symposia on Recent Advances of Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyposis, organized since 2000 around the world
Background: The problems of rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis have been discussed further back in time. Nature of nasal polyps is diverse. Therapeutical approaches back then were original and strange in some cases. Connections with rhino-sinu-nasal pathologies have been proven in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Data shows that OSA severity is directly related to the response of the tissues in the area.Materials and methods: Scientific databases – PubMed, SCOPUS and MEDLINE were used to search for gathering the data in need. The following keywords rhinosinusitis, nasal polyposis, treatment. Information and data from the official websites of the organizing committees has been used. The aim of the following article is to study the history of rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis diagnosis and treatment development.Results and discussion: Acute and chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis are conditions more frequently diagnosed nowadays, due to the multifactorial etiology they are linked to. Authors have been continuously working on the field, more abruptly since the year of 2000. A number of scientific events have been organized, where clinicians reached to consensus and issued guidelines on how the mentioned conditions should be treated. FESS and computer aided surgeries have been in the focus in the last 10 years.Conclusions: Rhino-sinu-nasal pathology is directly related to the quality of life of patients affected. Therefore, clinicians should continue working in the field, and investigating the root causes of the disorders. More attention is to be brought on the allergic etiology, often main cause of the nasal pathologies
Historical development of methods for diagnosis and treatment of OSA
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been known to mankind since ancient times. Medical documents from 2000 years ago that have been found contain information describing severe snoring (apnea) characteristic of OSA. In order to obtain the information targeted research was carried out in the Scientific databases PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science. „History of OSA”, „CPAP”, „Polysomnography” keywords were used in for the search.The aim of this article is to present the historical development of methods for diagnosis and treatment of OSA. In 1981 Sullivan et al. published in the Lancet scientific paper on Obstructive Sleep Apnea “ Reversal of obstructive sleep apnea by continuous airway pressure applied through the nares “ . At the end of the XIX th century, the term “Pickwickian syndrome” was introduced in the medical literature. In 1965, the polysomnographic unit was created and for the first time, with the help of electronic device, sleep apnea was registered in patients. Eventually ambulatory sleep testing was introduced as an alternative to polysomnography. Apnea Graph is a new innovative ambulatory sleep analysis tool that identifies the location of snoring obstruction and OSA. It also determines the type of OSA. In 1981, the first CPAP for treatment OSA was created. Sullivan’s findings prove that CPAP is a very effective device for treating OSA
Anthropometric measurements and food intake questionnairesas assessment tools for nutritional status in children with autism spectrum disorders
This review explores the utility of anthropometric measurements and food intake questionnaires as assessment tools for determin-ing the nutritional status of children with autism. Recognizing the unique challenges in evaluating dietary habits and nutritional adequacy in this population, the study investigates the reliability and validity of anthropometric measurements, such as height, weight, and body mass index, alongside food intake questionnaires administered to children with autism. The findings hold promise for enhancing nutritional interventions and developing targeted strategies to address the distinctive dietary preferences and sensitivities often observed in children with autism, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of their nutritional wellbeing
