Acupressure in Everyday Life
Acupressure is a healing method used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) by which certain meridian points in the human body are manually stimulated in order to heal the body and introduce the correct circulation of the vital energy "Qi". Chinese medicine theory states that the constant flow of Qi through the meridians is essential to maintaining the health of the body. Acupressure is a manual, non-invasive method to influence the well-being of the body. It is performed by a person who has undergone specialized training, but it can also be applied independently on one's own body with training from a specialist in this field. Common everyday complaints, including stress, anxiety, panic, headaches, and high blood pressure, are typically addressed using established Western medical practices such as pharmacological interventions and other medicinal treatments. Nevertheless, complementary methods like acupressure can supplement the primary therapy by exerting a holistic influence on the entire body. Numerous scientific studies support the efficacy of acupressure as a standalone approach for managing some of these everyday complaints. Additionally, acupressure can be combined with other natural remedies like essential oils, climate-based factors, and bee products. They gently influence the Qi energy and, in combination with acupressure, are a natural way to rebalance the body to optimize health and overall well-being and to cope with the stressful living conditions that accompany today's hectic lifestyle

Exploring Drug Repositioning: A Comprehensive Review Of Clinical, Regulatory, And Marketing Strategies
Drug repositioning, a widely adopted strategy, involves the exploration of new indications for investigational or already authorized medicinal products. This approach leverages clinical, regulatory, and marketing tactics to expand a drug's utility. From a clinical perspective, repositioning offers novel insights into addressing significant public health concerns through established drugs. Regulatory agencies support this strategy by streamlining marketing authorization processes, reducing data requirements, and waiving fees. For pharmaceutical companies, repositioning represents an opportunity to develop blockbuster drugs, saving both time and resources while boosting sales and profits. The integration of digital technologies has proven particularly valuable in screening vast numbers of molecules and diseases, uncovering unexpected therapy effects, and identifying candidates for repositioning, thus accelerating the discovery of new treatments. The aim of this study is to distinguish the advantages and objectives of repositioning while analyzing historical milestones and current trends within each this approach of repositioning
Retinopathy of prematurity as а cause of severe visual impairment and blindness among students from the Prof. Dr. Ivan Shishmanov Specialized School Students with Visual Impairment in Varna
Introduction: Severe impairment of visual function and total vision loss are particularly important public health issues worldwide. The issue is even more sensitive when children are involved, because the ability to see plays a key role in the process of perceiving the world around us and its loss has severe consequences on all aspects of a child’s development.Aim: The aim of this article is to report causes of severe visual impairment and blindness among students from Prof. Dr. Ivan Shishmanov Specialized School for Students with Visual Impairment in Varna, as well as to describe the place of the retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) among them.Materials and Methods: The current study included a sample of 143 persons, 88 boys (61.5%) and 55 (38.5%) girls. The included students were between 6 and 20 years of age, and the mean age for the whole cohort was 12.5 ± 3.7 years. The study was conducted in the period August 2022–November 2022 among the students in the Prof. Dr. Ivan Shishmanov Specialized School for Students with Visual Impairment after received permission from the school principal. Results: Atrophy of the optic nerve has been determined as a leading cause for vision loss with a rate of 74.8% of all cases. Retinopathy of prematurity took second place with a rate of 8.4%, followed by cortical visual impairment (5.6%) and other, unclassified reasons (5.6%). Among children with visual impairment due to ROP, the mean birth weight was 1033 ± 352 g, and the mean gestational age was 34.4 ± 1.44 weeks. The boys-to-girls ratio was 2:1. In most cases treatment for ROP had been conducted—cryotherapy in 5 cases (41.7%) and surgical treatment in 5 cases (41.7%). Almost all children (91.7%) were with neurodevelopmental delay, and hearing problems were diagnosed among 41.7% of them. Conclusion: Diseases of the optical nerve and retina were the main reason for severe visual impairment among the students from the Prof. Dr. Ivan Shishmanov Specialized School for Students with Visual Impairment in Varna
Surgical treatment of floppy eyelids—a triple procedure
Introduction:Floppy eyelid syndrome is a relatively rare disease, characterized by chronic eye inflammation, caused by unilateral or bilateral upper eyelid laxity.Middle-aged men with obesity and sleep apnea are most commonly affected, but the condition also occurs in women and children.Aim: The aim of this article is to describe our technique for surgical treatment of floppy eyelids.Materials and Methods: The surgical technique was implemented in 17 severe floppy eyelid cases (13 men, 4 women, 10 unilateral, 7 bilateral) for a period of 6 years with follow-up for a minimum of one year. Results: The triple procedure consists of horizontal shortening of the upper eyelid, advancement or resection of the levator aponeurosis, shortening and reconstruction of the anterior eyelid lamella. In all cases stable horizontal and vertical eyelid position and regular eyelash route was achieved. Conclusion: Combined pathology, characteristic for floppy eyelids, requires simultaneous surgical correction of each clinical feature, impairing the eyelid function.
Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on intracorporal endoscopic treatment in patients with upper urinary tract stones
IntroductionThe COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on healthcare systems worldwide, including the treatment of patients with upper urinary tract stones. Over the course of the pandemic, operative interventions such as ureterolithotripsy, retrograde intrarenal surgery, and percutaneous nephrolithotomy have been affected due to the need to prioritize resources to treat patients with COVID-19. AimThe article aims at summarizing and comparing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the treatment of people with upper urinary tract calculi who were patients at the Clinic of Urology at St. Marina University Hospital in Varna during two periods: 2018–2019 and 2020–2021. Materials and methodsThe operative protocols and journals of all patients treated by URS, RIRS, and PCNL at the Clinic of Urology at St. Marina University Hospital in Varna for the respective two periods were processed. Articles on the subject published in recent years were studied. ResultsThe analysis of data from our experience shows a decrease of nearly 39% in the number of operative interventions for upper urinary tract stones in the second period. According to the literature we have researched, a similar decline is observed in other developed European countries. ConclusionThe COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a reduction in the number of PCNL, RIRS, and URS lithotripsy procedures performed in order to prevent viral spread during hospitalization
Retrospective analysis of morbidity and temporary disability in a construction company for the period 2019-2021
IntroductionConstruction company employees are at a higher risk of work-related diseases and occupational injuries.Materials and methodsThe data from primary medical examinations performed at a construction company with an average listed number of 1340 employees for a 3-year period, from 2019 to 2021, was analyzed. The number of primary cases and lost work days for each year of the period were presented, distributed according to age groups and occupational disease classes. The indicators of morbidity and temporary work incapacity were determined and compared with indicative-normative groups according to Batkis-Lekarev.Results and discussionMore than 49% of the construction company employees were over 45, and the morbidity and labor losses in this age group were the highest. There was a low frequency of registered diseases, a relatively high share of short-term work incapacity, cases of temporary work incapacity, and labor losses. The average duration of a case was high (over 10 days), and the relative share of frequent and long-term work incapacity was low in 2020 and 2021, and at an average level in 2019. Cases under the category "Diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue" (DMSSCT) accounted for 23.1% of the total number of cases. Leading among them were the cases due to damage of the intervertebral discs in the lumbar and other segments with radiculopathy, with a frequency of 17.33 on average for the period. In terms of days of temporary work incapacity, the group DMSSCT was the leader with 27.8% of all days of temporary incapacity for work. The majority of labor losses were the result of damage to the intervertebral discs in the lumbar and other spinal segments due to radiculopathy (405.3 on average over the 3-year period).ConclusionsEmployees over 45 years of age had the highest morbidity rate during the period analyzed. The most common occupational diseases they suffered from were those of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue. The majority of the cases involved damage to the intervertebral discs. The introduction and adherence to measures for safe working conditions, along with the development of an occupational risk assessment program, would definitely help reduce morbidity and temporary work incapacity in the long run
