Dynamic Postural Analysis In Patients With Orthodontic Deformities, TMJ Disorders, And Vestibular Deficiencies
Get PDFINTRODUCTION: Human posture is an automatic and unconscious position in which an individual’s body and limbs are situated to perform everyday static and dynamic activities with minimal energy expenditure. The relationships between the muscles that maintain posture, the stomatognathic system, and the vestibular and visual systems are studied by clinicians across various medical fields.AIM: The aim of this scientific publication, based on the PhD thesis of the first author, is to perform a dynamic postural analysis in different patient groups and to investigate the relationship between deviations in tooth-jaw relationships, disorders of the audio-vestibular apparatus, and their impact on postural control, balance, and overall body posture.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 134 patients from Varna and the surrounding region, aged 8 to 87 years, were examined. The examinations and diagnostic tests were conducted at the University Medical and Dental Center, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Medical University “Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov” - Varna. All patients underwent dental, occlusion, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) examinations by a dental medicine specialist, and ENT examinations by an ENT specialist. Posturographic examination and analysis were conducted by both specialists. All patients provided written informed consent, and ethical approval was obtained from the Ethics Commission of the Medical University of Varna (№99/14.01.2021).RESULTS: The data show a predominant shift of the center of gravity to the right in the transverse direction (left-right), most commonly occurring in patients with vestibular disorders (Group 4), followed by patients without orthodontic and audio-vestibular disorders (Group 1) and those with combined disorders (Group 2). The highest average values of the Length and Surface of the Sway Curve were observed in Group 2. Among all patients, the oval (pathologic) shape of the stabilogram was predominant.DISCUSSION: Based on these results, patients can be referred for rehabilitation or further diagnosis by other medical specialists. The study reconfirms diagnostic conclusions obtained from other specialists in the field. Stabilometric platforms prove to be a fast and reliable source of data gathering.CONCLUSION: The presence of orthodontic and/or vestibular disorders affects body stability parameters. The connections between the stomatognathic system and the postural, plantar, and audio-vestibular systems were confirmed
Renal replacement therapy by peritoneal dialysis: biomarkers in drained peritoneal solution
Get PDFDuring long-term renal replacement therapy with peritoneal dialysis (PD), changes in the structure and function of the peritoneal membrane (PM) occur, which must be diagnosed. Peritoneal biopsy is not routinely performed because it is an invasive procedure with potential complications that may require the interruption of PD. Routine examination of peritoneal transport does not provide sufficient information on changes in the PM. Numerous studies have investigated the feasibility of certain biomarkers in drained peritoneal solution to be included in the panel of routine investigations for assessing the PM in PD patients. Drained peritoneal fluid is readily available for examination, and there are no patient risks associated with multiple sampling, making it suitable for monitoring. The most studied biomarkers include Cancer Antigen 125 (CA 125), Transforming Growth Factor Beta (TGF-β), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), and IL-6, among others.In conclusion, the determination of biomarkers in drained peritoneal solution is a non-invasive method that would allow for the periodic assessment of the PM, early detection of changes, and the possibility of timely adjustment of PD treatment parameters
Opportunities of natural and synthetic factors in combatting antibiotic resistance
Get PDFAntibiotic resistance represents an increasingly serious public health issue in Europe. The emergence, spread, and selection of resistant bacteria pose a threat to patient safety, leading to higher medical costs, prolonged hospital stays, and increased mortality. The world urgently needs to change the way antibiotics are prescribed and used. Even if new drugs are developed, without behavioral change, antibiotic resistance will remain a primary threat. Behavioral changes must include actions to reduce infection spread through vaccination, hand hygiene, safer sex practices, and proper food hygiene.Aim: To outline the potential of natural and synthetic factors in combating antibiotic resistance.Materials and Methods: Analysis of literary sources and documentary analysis.Conclusion: Antibiotic resistance is a global problem that requires integrated efforts to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use in medicine, agriculture, and industry. This includes improving diagnostic methods, educating healthcare professionals and the public on proper antibiotic use, as well as developing new antibacterial agents and alternative therapies. Only through coordinated efforts at all levels of society can we effectively reduce the burden of antibiotic resistance and preserve the efficacy of antibiotics for future generations.

Get PDFMyeloproliferative diseases, or myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), represent a heterogeneous group of hematological monoclonal diseases characterized by a primary disorder of hematopoietic stem cells, leading to excessive production of mature cells of the erythroid, granulocytic, and megakaryocytic lineages.A central role in the pathogenesis of MPNs is played by activating or driver mutations, which act as the main "motor" activating the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. Additionally, the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways also contribute to the pathogenesis of MPNs.Studying the complex regulation of intracellular signaling in MPN patients may provide insights into the pathophysiology of the disease and potential treatment options
