Framework of Measuring Economic Competencies
Get PDFHow to model economic competencies with the objective of empirically testing them? This question has been discussed for many years now without a conclusive measurement model having been presented thus far. Taking an in-depth analysis of the definition of competency proposed by Weinert (2001) as a starting point, we will derive a framework for the necessary complexity of competency assessment, which finds its graphical representation in a competence octagon. After discussing existing empirical work in the field of economic education and classifying it using the categories of the competence octagon, we will then propose a new model of economic competency that allows for empirical testing
Turkey’s New Citizenship and Democracy Education Course: Search for Democratic Citizenship in a Difference-Blind Polity?
Get PDFThe paper introduces and critically evaluates the new Citizenship and Democracy Education course in the Turkish curriculum. This course has been introduced as a mandatory subject in grade 8 per one hour a week in the 2011-2012 academic year. Following the comprehensive 2005 curriculum reform, Citizenship and Human Rights Education courses had been abolished and these themes had been distributed to the curriculum of different courses. However, recommendations of academics and international bodies such as the Council of Europe on the advantages of having a distinct course on citizenship and human rights have led the Ministry of National Education to reintroduce a compulsory course covering these themes. The new course seems to be a human rights education course with its emphasis on rights and responsibilities. It could be considered a progressive step in this regard. However, the implication that educating people about their rights could be a basis of democratic citizenship might not be realized in present Turkey where internal conflicts based on religious, ethnic and language-based differences are becoming salient. The paper argues that democratization of citizenship in Turkey requires not only an education about rights but also the questioning of the current difference-blind civic republican notion of citizenship. It draws attention to the necessity of the development of a new political framework and a related citizenship course that would allow for peaceful coexistence of cultural differences
Questionning the Citizenship Industry
Get PDFI argue that citizenship and related concepts should be treated warily by educators and researchers. Citizenship cannot define who I am, nor can it plausibly ground moral or values education. For both these tasks, the relational concept of being a person in the world does a better, and simpler, job. I suggest that classrooms which take the concept of personhood seriously should function as inquiring communities, in which such issues as the meaning and importance of our affiliations and associations may be critically examined. There may be good reasons for the recent expansion of what I term “the citizenship industry” in educational research, but they should not be taken for granted, particularly given that the concept of citizenship is often used by governments around the world to support strongly nationalistic policies which are inimical to genuine inquiry and autonomy

Lob der Verschiedenheit – Umgang mit Heterogenität in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Bildung
Get PDFObwohl sich der Diskurs über den Umgang mit Heterogenität und Diversität in den letzten Jahren intensiviert hat, ist das Thema wirtschaftsdidaktisch „unterbelichtet“. Im Beitrag werden – ohne einen Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit – einige grundsätzliche Überlegungen über den Umgang mit Heterogenität und Diversität angesprochen. Hervorgehoben wird, dass in der Diskussion die je spezifische und komplexe Bedürfnislage des Einzelnen ins Zentrum gerückt wird, also subjektbezogene Differenzkategorien im Mittelpunkt stehen. Welche Herausforderungen sich angesichts objektbezogener Differenzkategorien ergeben, wird nur gelegentlich angesprochen. Angesicht der heterogenen Weltbilder, Paradigma und Bezugsdisziplinen für und in einer sozialwissenschaftlichen Bildungslandschaft mit ihrer Vielzahl an fachdidaktischen Konzepten und den damit verbunden didaktischen Handlungsfeldern (Curricula, Bildungsstandards, Lehr-Lern-Methoden, Materialien, Lehr-Lern-Umgebungen etc.) stellen sich ein ganzes Bündel von Fragen, die in diesem Beitrag aufgelistet und partiell in diesem Heft erörtert werden
