Exploring high school students’ 3D geometry problem-solving: Role of cognitive style and mathematical ability

    No full text
Purpose: This research investigates how high school students approach three-dimensional geometry problems by considering differences in cognitive styles (impulsive and reflective) and levels of mathematical ability. The aim is to understand the variations in problem-solving strategies based on Polya’s stages, which include understanding the problem, planning, executing, and reviewing the solution. Method: A descriptive qualitative method was used with a comparative case study design. Four students were selected through purposive sampling, each representing a unique combination of cognitive style and mathematical ability. Data collection involved problem-solving tests and semi-structured interviews. The analysis focused on tracing the students’ reasoning and decision-making processes throughout each stage of problem solving. Findings: The results show that students with a reflective cognitive style tend to be more thorough when planning and reviewing their work. Impulsive students, on the other hand, often rush through the process, resulting in errors, although those with high mathematical ability can still demonstrate effective strategies and occasionally correct their mistakes. Students with stronger mathematical ability generally show better visualization, abstraction, and accuracy in applying geometric concepts. Significance: These findings suggest the need for instructional strategies that are sensitive to students’ cognitive profiles. Teaching approaches that emphasize structured reflection and scaffolding may enhance geometry learning outcomes, especially for students who tend to act impulsively

Digital Marginalization in Talang Kemuning Village: The Impact of Internet Access Inequality on Social Life

    No full text
This study investigates the phenomenon of digital marginalization in Talang Kemuning Village, where inadequate network infrastructure creates significant barriers to digital inclusion. Grounded in Amartya Sen's Capability Approach, the research conceptualizes development as a process of expanding individuals' substantive freedoms to achieve valued ways of living. The absence of reliable internet access has created multidimensional deprivation, limiting residents' ability to participate in digital communication, access vital information, and engage in socioeconomic opportunities. The study addresses two central questions: (1) How does infrastructure deficiency perpetuate digital inequality in rural communities? (2) What strategies can local change agents employ to mitigate these disparities? Using a qualitative descriptive methodology, we analyze geographical constraints, technical limitations, and the resultant social exclusion. Data collection included in-depth interviews with community members and participatory observation of digital access initiatives. Findings reveal that connectivity limitations create cascading effects: students face educational disadvantages due to inability to access online learning; local entrepreneurs are excluded from digital marketplaces; and social isolation intensifies as community members cannot participate in virtual networks. However, the research documents an innovative community-led solution through the implementation of a voucher-based WiFi system. This intervention demonstrates how localized approaches can simultaneously address technical access barriers while enhancing human capabilities. The study contributes to digital development literature by showing how Sen's framework applies to connectivity challenges. It argues that sustainable solutions require both technological infrastructure and capacity-building initiatives that empower communities to convert access into meaningful opportunities. These insights have important implications for policymakers designing inclusive digital development programs in rural contexts.

This study examines the impact of small-scale practicum kits and flipbook-based instruction on students’ learning motivation in chemistry, specifically in acid–base material. Conducted at SMAN 15 Tangerang Regency, a school with limited laboratory resources, the research employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest control group. The experimental group (Class E) utilized small-scale practicum kits and flipbooks, while the control group (Class C) used traditional large-scale laboratory equipment and student worksheets. A total of 34 students in the experimental class and 36 in the control class participated in the study. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0, and the statistical tests revealed a significant increase in learning motivation in the experimental group (p = 0.016). The average posttest score for Class E was 60.04, compared to 52.08 for Class C, indicating that the small-scale practicum kits and flipbooks positively influenced students’ motivation. These findings suggest that integrating sustainable and interactive learning tools not only enhances student engagement but also addresses the challenges of resource-limited educational settings. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on the efficacy of small-scale chemistry kits and digital instructional tools in fostering sustainable and inclusive learning experiences in secondary education

Assessing the CAAS among VHS students provides insights into the students' career adaptability concerning the transition from VHS to the workforce. While the CAAS is used concerning students' adaptability within the VHS curriculum, there is a lack of development of an appropriate and validated indonesian version of the CAAS for VHS students. The CAAS consists of the core dimensions of concern, control, curiosity, and confidence. This study sought to culturally adapt the CAAS, develop its validation, and assess the reliability of the CAAS within an educational context, with the CAAS focused specifically on VHS students. The sample consisted of 396 students from 9th and 10th grade. Data were analysed using CFA and multigroup invariance testing. Internally, the CAAS dimensions achieved distributive achievement of CAAS dimensions and contained acceptable convergent reliabilities. However, there were some CAAS dimensions which contained low AVEs. However, the model fit indices, achieving 0.943 and an RMSEA of 0.056, suggest a good model fit. In particular, multigroup invariance testing, which obtained configurational, metric, scalar, and strict invariance, further strengthened the index and model fit testing. With proven validation and reliability, the Indonesian version of the CAAS measures the career adaptability of vocational high school students; this demonstrates its value for vocational schools in developing sharper career guidance for students. Considering other variables related to career development, future studies should focus on predictive validity and other educational levels. Further research should assess the predictive validity with other career development variables and extend to other educational levels
