    Viewing Nordic Public Management.

    Get PDF
How do Nordic states conduct policies in order to bring people closer to the socio-economic realm, in the sense that they, being social capital, tend to be integrated as active and participatory citizens? How do the interventionist and expensive Nordic welfare states survive in the global age, with demanding and ever changing claims to international competitiveness? This paper addresses these questions. Social capital and partnership building are introduced as terms and policy concepts in order to find answers in the framework of intended or unintended strategic taming endeavours. As a critical approach claims a contextual conceptualisation, we shall here view different European social models and administrative traditions in relation to comparative basic contexts in order to arrive at analytical answers. Leaning especially on the Anglo-Saxon model, the traditional Scandinavian universal welfare state model of the post-war Keynesian order has gradually been transformed into the contemporary Nordic model (Veggeland 2007). Contextual regulatory innovations and path-dependent processes have generated the survival of universal welfare state arrangements and collective action but with the mixed use of Market-Type Mechanisms (MTM) in the public sector of Anglo-Saxon origin. In summary, this blending of policies has resulted in the advantageous social capital of what is called flexicurity, social security combined with a flexible participatory labour market. We shall discuss both flexicurity policy and participatory subsidiarity defined downwards as contributions to an explanation of why the expensive welfare states of the Nordic type have not only so far been doing well but have also sustained both democratic and output-side legitimacy

Inhomogeneous Density and Energy Spectrum of Elementary Excitations of Electron Liquid of Conductors in Magnetic Field

    Get PDF
It is shown that the conventional theory of electron liquid in a magnetic field is based on the model that is incorrecting mathematically and contradicting to experiments. On the foundation of statistical mechanics that takes into account angular momentum conservation law is obtained the effective Hamiltonian of the electron liquid in a magnetic field that includes the quasielectrostatic potential proportional to the square of the magnetic field. As result, the electron liquid is inhomogeneous, and together with the homogeneous neutralizingbackground generates an electrostatic potential. The sum of these potentials is the residual potential that forms an energetically spectrum of elementary excitations of the electron liquid in the homogeneousmagnetic field. This spectrum is quasicontinuous, and itsbeginning issomewhat higher than the value of the potential energy at the boundary. The graph of the dependence of the density of states on energy has the form of a staircasewith horizontal steps. The density of states in the mean is proportional to the square root from energy

The Relationship between Leadership Behaviour and Work Engagement – A Literature Review

    Get PDF
Leaders in educational and training institutions or organisations are not different from leaders in other organisations, and therefore are faced with the same challenge of maintaining the corporate objectives of their organisations. The emphasis is on how business organisations can create effective leadership behaviour that fosters increased employee work engagement in order to achieve set business outcomes. Many studies have shown that a leader’s leadership behaviour or style and employee’s work engagement are two of the most important factors responsible for business success. Also, many researchers have observed that the leader’s leadership behaviour considerably influences employee’s work engagement. For any organisation to achieve its corporate goals and objectives, it must clearly understand and align these two important constructs. Therefore, theories of leadership, employee work engagement and relationship between these two constructs are reviewed in this study

    Get PDF
Traditional communication mix elements have become pricey. Therefore there is a growing need for marketers to find cheaper alternatives to communicate with their target audience. Mobile phone marketing will lower the costs of advertising and at the same time improve relationships between marketers and consumers as it targets the personal element of marketing communication. According to research, 29 million people use mobile phones in South Africa. The research objectives seek to determine the different uses of mobile technology by consumers, how mobile phone users interact with mobile marketing techniques, and to make recommendations on the optimal use of mobile marketing. This quantitative study established that, although it might not be the first choice of receiving marketing communications, the majority of the people would still like to receive adverts via their mobile, proving that mobile marketing has a place in marketing. The findings revealed that 34% of South African mobile phone users have smartphones, this creates a new market for mobile internet, social media, and mobile email adverts. It is important that marketers should also use other methods of marketing communication mix as 28 million people use radio and 26 million people use televisions in South Africa, proving that these gadgets are still important in the consumers’ lives and in information sharing. Mobile marketing cannot replace the conventional marketing communication methods completely but can complement the efforts and create an interactive platform for marketers and their consumers

    Get PDF
The primary objectives for this research study were to investigate the impact of organisational communication on employee performance and to provide recommendations on how organisational communication can be improved at the institution. The secondary objectives were to investigate the different forms of communication practised there as well as to investigate the employee perceptions of the organisational communication. This research study contributed to the existing body of knowledge around this subject area by establishing the nature and testing the extent of the impact of organisational communication on employee performance. Results showed that email is predominantly used at the institution to disseminate information to its employees and news is released in a timely manner to its employees. The majority of the respondents confirm that co-workers do not share information that is critical for enhancing performance. The findings from this study indicate that management should have frequent meetings and constant feedback on performances of their employees. The study also recommends that management communicates more with their employees in less informal surroundings

Implementation and Effectiveness of Strategic Actions Used to Reduce Employee Variability in the Service Sector

    Get PDF
Employee variability can have significant adverse effects on service delivery and customers’ perceptions of service quality. However, the types of employee variability that exist and the appropriate actions required to address these various types of variability have not been systematically examined. This pioneering study systematically develops a typology of employee variability consisting of six categories: (i) understanding variability; (ii) attitude variability; (iii) capability variability; (iv) method variability; (v) effort variability; and (vi) decision variability. The study also suggests strategic actions that can be used to reduce the effects of each kind of variability. The present study categorises the strategic actions to address employee variability into four groups: (i) classic accommodation (CA); (ii) classic reduction (CR); (iii) low-cost accommodation (LC); and (iv) uncompromised reduction (UR). An empirical study is then conducted among 97 reputable Taiwanese service firms. The results shows that the respondent companies prefer the traditional CA and CR strategies. In contrast, the LC strategies are relatively neglected, despite their potential for producing a significant reduction in the adverse effects of employee variability. The study concludes that service providers should place greater emphasis on the implementation of automated low-cost strategies to reduce the undesirable effects of employee variability

    Get PDF
In today's world, stress has become a global phenomenon, manifested in different forms in every workplace worldwide. For this study, role stress and its influence on job performance in selected banks in the Sunyani Municipality was assessed. A descriptive survey was conducted to identify the factors responsible for role stress in banks, effects of role-related stress on job performance, and stress coping strategies employed by bank employees in Sunyani municipality. Both secondary and primary data was used to gather information for the study. Questionnaire was used to collect data from 140 workers of five selected banks. The study revealed that workload, long working hours, reporting early to work, and lack of regular stress management practices were identified as the major factors contributing to role stress to the bank workers as affirmed by majority of the respondents. Again, the study found that there is a negative impact of role stress on job performance. Those workers who had high level of job stress exhibited low job performance. The study observed that management of the bank did not have established measures of managing stress among workers as affirmed by majority (85%) of the respondents. The study recommends that since the role-related stress from long working hours and workload were high among workers; the management of banks should pay attention to solving the issues of inadequate resources and equipment’s in order to prevent stress among staff and also improve upon performance.&nbsp
