Review and Comparative Analysis of Distributed Knowledge Management Systems
Distributed technologies attract researchers interest as they propose many technological, but as well organizational and end-user benefits. With development of Web 2.0 and Cloud computing, distributed networks are considered as new source of business opportunities. The present research will identify advantages and limitations of distributed knowledge management systems (DKMS). Thus technologies and models of distrubuted KMS will be assessed as an alternative approach to centralized KMS. A review of several theoretical DKMS model will be made in order to outline the common characteristics and alternative approaches to DKMS architecture. At the end will be summarised conclusions for development of new theoretical model of user-centered DKMS
Extracting Patient-Related Description from Medical Records in Bulgarian
This paper deals with the extraction of medical information from hospital patient records. It proposes a cascade approach for the extraction of multi-layer knowledge statements because the subject is too complex. We sketch the Information Extraction view to text analysis, where patient-related facts are recognised using predefined regular expressions and templates. A laboratory prototype for patient status extraction is presented together with the first evaluation results
A Case Study on the Adoption of Measurable Agile Software Development Process
Agile methodologies for software development meet the challenges of the current highly dynamic and competitive business environment. The aim of this case study is to improve existing software development process in a project for the public administration, following the basic principles of agile methodologies. Appropriate metrics for continuous evaluation of the process are introduces to help evaluating and improving the methodology. The main objectives of the new methodology are to improve communication with customers, to improve communication among different distributed teams and inside the teams, and to continuously evaluate the way software is developed through selection and usage of software metrics. The paper presents the results of methodology adoption in two subsequent iterations of a real project
Semantic Surfaces for Business Applications
In this paper we introduce the concept of semantic surfaces – surfaces which are enhanced to provide additional information to the one visible, and are able to interact with the user. We consider several approaches to their implementation and in particular show the perspectives of the Cluster Pattern Interface (CLUSPI) technology developed and patented by one of the authors. Various business applications of semantic surfaces are outlined which illustrate the potential of the proposed concept

Using Knowledge Management Technology to Aid Knowledge Transfer
This paper describes a practical system designed to create, maintain and manage teaching materials using knowledge management techniques. This system uses ISO Topic Maps to represent and store knowledge, which subsequently are accessed online or converted into multiple forms suitable for use as lecture materials. The benets of such a generic semantic knowledge store that represents information in a shallow and concise fashion include the ease of selecting pertinent material and of any subsequent transformation into presentations and lecture materials. Separating content lters and presentation rendering from the actual knowledge also allows for very ecient long-term maintenance of the knowledge. This environment has evolved over the last six years and become a major factor in reducing the eorts necessary to keep course materials up to date where the subjects cover fast-changing, emerging technologies and therefore require frequent revision. Our knowledge management approach to maintaining teaching materials also suggested itself as a novel assessment format: in advanced subjects we have had quite positive experiences with tasking students with research exercises where the deliverable is such a topic map instead of the more common essay format. This paper gives an overview of our integrated environment and outlines the benets and positive results we have experienced with its use for teaching purposes
Connecting and Sharing Open-Content Learning Resources
While the number of learning repositories is increasing, there is no sufficient understanding of how to motivate and facilitate educators to share and reuse learning content. This paper proposes a framework addressing these challenges by integrating traditional approaches with Web 2.0 and Semantic Web technologies. It illustrates how the proposed approaches are used to implement LinkedCourse, a prototype repository for rapid collaborative development, sharing, and reuse of resources for emerging disciplines. The focus of the paper is on the collaborative annotation and community formation supporting the social framework of LinkedCourse

SmartBook: The New Generation e-Book Meets University 2.0
This paper presents a vision for the future of the e-books as part of the growing collective intelligence. The vision entails further development of technologies that will facilitate the creation and use of a new generation of ‘smart’ books: e-books that are evolving, highly interactive, customisable, adaptable, intelligent, and furnished with a rich set of collaborative authoring and reading support services. The proposed set of tools will be integrated into an intelligent framework for collaborative book authoring and experiencing called SmartBook. The paper also discusses the opportunities to use SmartBook as a vehicle for building professional virtual communities of practice in the framework of a University 2.0 organization dedicated to industry-university cooperation
Redefining the Role of Testers in Organisational Transition to Agile Methodologies
Many challenges confront companies when they change their current software development process to an agile development methodology. Those challenges could be rather difficult but one that requires considerable attention is the integration of testing with development. This is because in heavyweight processes, as in the traditional waterfall approach, testing is a phase often conducted by testers as part of a quality assurance team towards the end of the development cycle whereas in the agile methodology testing is part of a continuous development activity with no specific “tester” role defined. In this paper we consider several options for testers when an organisation transit to agile methodology, and propose a new project mentor role for them. This role aims to utilize the knowledge that testers already have in both the business domain and the development technology together with their expertise in quality practices. This role will enhance the stature of testers as well as enable the company to effectively deploy the testers in the new environment. Motivations and benefits for this role are presented in this paper together with our plan for evaluation of this proposal
