    The Global Campus: ICT and the Global Transformation of Higher Education

    This paper analyses the changes which the ICT drives in a global scale. The emergence of e-Infrastructure for e-Science, the Open Educational Resources movement, e-Libraries and the tendency of building global educational alliances are analysed as well. The paper puts in focus the influence of the Web 2.0 technologies and the new organizational models they drive, e.g. Enterprise 2.0, University 2.0. A new university model is defined – the Global Campus Model. Some arguments that the ultimate result of the ICT driven transformation in the world could make the whole world to become a Global Campus in the next few decades

    Today, the adoption of Enterprise 2.0 is not an option, but a must for knowledge-based organizations within the changing social paradigms. The new-coming generation of employees and customers expect the technological proficiency to be part of the customer-centered business models. On their turn, organizations need to apply new forms of cooperation with their employees, customers, suppliers and partners. The knowledge is recognized as crucial resource and its efficient management determines sustainability and survival of the businesses. Knowledge management is widely accepted management practice within companies, but knowledge management systems in fact are rarely used by knowledge workers. Within the shift of emerging Web 2.0 and Cloud Computing, KMS have to be reconsidered from more social and user-focused perspective. An overview of the existing KMS architectures is made and main characteristics, advantages and limitations of the social software components are identified and assessed. At the end, a new model of user-centric architecture for distributed KMS is proposed, based on Cloud Computing and Enterprise 2.0 paradigm

    MATTER: Metadata Migration and Annotation. Tool of Teacher Education Resources

    Despite ongoing research on learning repositories, share and reuse of Teacher Education (TE) resources remains scarce. One of the reasons is that TE communities use their own in-house resources and repositories in a rather isolated way, thus limiting resource exchange in different contexts. Further, current learning metadata specifications such as Dublin Core (DC) and LOM do not address the description of pedagogical characteristics of resources demanded by TE practitioners. To overcome these limitations, the Share.TEC project aims to provide a federated TE metadata repository based on the Common Metadata Model (CMM) as the shared reference metadata model. Key for the success of the Share.TEC project is the migration of existing TE metadata records to the federated repository, performing the necessary format conversions to CMM. Besides, practitioners should be able to make TE-based annotations of resources. These two functionalities are covered by the Metadata Migration and Annotation Tool of Teacher Education Resources (MATTER) that is the subject of this paper. Although MATTER is purposed for the Share.TEC project, it can be potentially used to support the federation of other learning repositories

In this context a Lifelong Learning Model (LLM) finds its realization through an integrated solution among the personal, social and formal learning.     NeOn Methodology for Building Ontology Networks: a Scenario-based Methodology

    The 1990s and the first years of this new millennium have witnessed the growing interest of many practitioners in methodologies that support the creation of single or isolated ontologies. All these approaches have supposed a step forward since they have transformed the art of constructing single ontologies into an engineering activity. With the goal of speeding up the ontology development process, ontology practitioners are starting to reuse and re-engineer as much as possible knowledge resources (such as ontologies, thesauri, lexicons, and classification schemas), which already have reached some degree of con sensus. In this paper, we present the set of nine scenarios identified in the NeOn Methodology framework. Additionally, we present how such scenarios have been followed in different use cases

    Fault-Proneness Estimation and Java Migration: A Preliminary Case Study

    The paper presents and discusses an industrial case study, where an eight year running software project has been analyzed. We collected about 1000 daily-versions, together with the file version control system, and bug tracking data. This project has been migrated from Java 1.4 to Java 1.5, and visible effects of this migration on the bytecode are presented and discussed. From this case study, we expect to observe the effects on the code size produced by the Java technology migration, and to improve the performances of already existing fault-proneness estimation models. Preliminary results about fault-proneness estimation are shown

    Improving the Elasticity of Services with a P2P Infrastructure

    Web Services (WS) are one of the most popular approaches for building distributed systems due to their widespread acceptance within industry and academia, established and open standards, a wealth of development tools/infrastructures (e.g. Apache Axis [1]), and maybe most importantly the number of successful deployments. A key issue in the deployment of WS is the elasticity of services e.g. their ability to respond to changes in the demand by dynamically adding or removing WS provider nodes. This paper presents a novel P2P based management approach for WS providers, that allows organizations to dynamically add or remove replicated providers at runtime and thus increases their elasticity. Unlike the current centralized approaches, this scalable P2P approach allows for a fully distributed and fault-tolerant management of replicated provider and thus enables organizations to respond faster to changes in WS consumer behavior
