    Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) have been assumed as an important learning resource to be added as a module in e-learning systems. However, the construction of such systems is still a hard and complex task that involves, for instance, representation and manipulation of different knowledge source. To alleviate these issues, this paper proposes a new approach for building ITS by integrating Software Product Line and Semantic Web technologies focusing on two software engineering aspects: large-scale production and customization for different learners, and how to allow these knowledge to be automatically shared between software and authors in both reuse and knowledge evolution points of view. This paper shows a modeling for the proposed product line, as well as how the Semantic Web technologies was used to achieve the effective shared knowledge

    A Successful Application of the Agile Manifesto to Resource Constrained Projects with Open Specifications

    In this paper we describe how agile manifesto can be applied when a specific software solution is needed in a resource, i.e., time- and manpower- constrained environment, while the specifications are not detailed, and are prone to changes. The case study, to which this method was put on test, was an online application framework for the EU-funded EURECA project, which deals with academic mobility at all levels (e.g., students, researchers, and staff) between 16 different universities from countries in Asia and Europe. The organization of this project turned out to be a herculean task during the first call for applications. Subsequently, we developed an on-line application management framework with limited resources within a short span of time following the principles and practices of the agile manifesto. The stages and processes that were used during development are discussed in this paper, both in general and for the actual application in the EURECA framework development

    This article describes project-based learning (PBL) approach applied in the course Data Structures and Programming taught in Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics at Sofia University. PBL is a component of a larger and integral approach that includes teaching through lectures and seminars. The proposed PBL is based on group projects with medium development timelines. The basic phases of projects development are presented. Sample project descriptions in terms of subject are given. The results of the pilot are analyzed and future development requirements are proposed

    Cluster to User Profile Ontology Mapping

    In this paper, we present an approach that uses cluster analysis techniques to extend the ontology of an E-learning domain. This approach is significantly different from any current information retrieval systems, it uses a global ontology model that represents the whole E-learning domain combined with clusters’ centroids vocabularies (terms) to extend the core ontology model. The most important advantage of clustering from the personalization perspective is that the clusters are later used as automatically constructed labels for each user profile. Hence, depending on the document collection and its evolution, both the user profiles and their underlying ontology labels are allowed to change or evolve accordingly. Our proposed approach has been implemented on the HyperMany-Media1 platform at Western Kentucky University, USA

The current research study proposes a modification of PSP which aims at lightening the software development process and making it easier to follow, while keeping the PSP basic principles.     Myths and Realities about Technology Enhanced Learning

    The article deals with some myths about teachers’ role in a technology enhanced learning process. The spectrum of myths under discussion ranges from complete rejection of ICT to their overidealization. We have come across these myths in the context of teacher education both in national and international setting. The paper is focusing on several in-service teacher training courses on interactive teaching methods, on new technologies in education, and on computer skills. The main problems are due to the prevailing attempts bringing the new technologies to an existing school setting which is teacher-centered, with practically fixed curriculum, treating ICT as an object of study... Such conditions make it natural for the teachers to feel uncomfortable and even insecure in a technology enhanced environment where students are more experienced technically. We discuss the effects of applying a recently developed methodology (known as I*Teach) towards altering the viewpoint of the teachers about the changes in their role

    Share.TEC System Architecture

    This paper presents the Share.TEC system architecture and the first system prototype. This description stresses on the main system components and underlying technologies, standards and protocols. The main system functionalities are following logically from the main use cases and user requirements. The system design allows a tight integration between data, which have been automatically harvested from various external repositories, and a representation of the ontology that describes all aspects of the teacher education domain. The proposed implementation relies on modern features such as searching a net of digital objects interconnected by custom-defined relations. A multicultural system which accommodates to the user preferences requires specific user interface. The dynamic approach for presenting the information to the user, based on the teacher education ontology, contributes to the flexibility of the system

    A Just-In-Time Information Retrieval Agent that Provides Context Aware Support of Text Creation

    Finding relevant resources and supplemental information that support the process of text creation is time consuming and often distracting for the author. With the increase of digitally stored information, accessing diverse information resources is easier but at the same time it gets harder and harder to find the relevant information giving you full view on the subject you write or read about. We propose a solution for getting the needed contextual view over the relevant accessible resources - an autonomous just-in-time information retrieval agent for automatic context information finding. The agent extracts keywords, searches and suggests relevant resources. Having the process of gathering relevant information automated greatly improves the user’s productivity and saves up her/his time
