    An Analyst’s Geospatial and Ontological Assistant

    We discuss an Intelligence Analyst’s Geospatial and Ontological Assistant (IAGOA) under development that associates an intelligence analyst’s understanding of an agent’s activities with the geospatial features of the area of operation where they take place. Activities are identified with frames for the corresponding verbs from the FrameNet lexical database. A modeler, using the FrameNet OWL distribution, produces software used by the analyst to update a KML file with annotations identifying instantiations of the frames elements of the relevant frames. The Google Earth API is used for rendering KML files and scripting. The agent is tracked and the analyst’s conjecture of its activity is simulated; the analyst can redo her conjecture if need be. IAGOA’s FrameNet-based approach instantiates concepts inherent in language, making explicit the activities and the constellation of role-fillers involved in these activities

    Cost Dependent QoS-based Discovery of Web Services

    The role of the web services for development of distributed applications steadily increases over time. However, the rising number of available web services with the same functionality embarrasses clients during selection of such a one that fits best their requirements. To solve this problem, web service selection process needs to concern not only functional but also nonfunctional (QoS) properties of web services. The clients need to know the quality of the offered web services as well as what will be the price that they should pay for that quality. This paper contributes to this challenge by presenting an algorithm that allows clients to select the web service with an optimal correlation between quality and price

    Fast Information Retrieval in the Open Grid Service Architecture

    Information retrieval offers resource discovery mechanisms for unstructured information and has thus been identified as a standardization goal by the open grid forum. We argue that an integration of information retrieval into the infrastructure is not only an interesting prospect for grid users, but is in fact necessary because the batch processing approach supported by the open grid service architecture is at odds with the requirements of online query processing. The cost of staging the search indices to an allocated compute node to answer sporadic but frequent search queries is prohibitive. We advocate the use of web services as a cross site messaging mechanism and discuss the alternatives. To investigate, we have designed and built a prototype system for grid image retrieval. Unfortunately, the statelessness and isolation of web services proved problematic for our purposes, but we present a software architecture that can efficiently overcome these issues

    Electronic Dictionary Notebook - Enhancing the Language Learning Process

    Upon its entry to the European Union, Bulgaria was presented with the challenge of intensive interaction with foreigners, so, speaking fluently several languages became a must. This paper presents a software application aiming to improve the process of language learning. The proposed solution, specializing in vocabulary augmentation, supports entry of word meanings, image suggestions, conjugation, examinations and statistics, searching and filtering. Each feature is carefully selected to target a particular need while studying within a language course or on one’s own. This paper also demonstrates how freely available resources on the Internet and a little programming effort can be combined to produce a useful tool for daily use

    In this paper we present the results of browsing, analyzing and comparing many ontology mapping tools, approaches and methods. We extract and classify valuable parameters for strict and unambiguous tool or method description. Every mapping tool, algorithm or approach must have such a description, practically usable for both human and software agents and sufficient for easy checking if it suitable or not for a given task. We will use our classifications for developing ontology, conceptualizing all valuable metadata for semantic machine-processable mapping tools description

    Color Correction Acceleration Using a Color Cube and OpenCL

    The article deals with the problem of real time color correction on modern but not dedicated video hardware, suggesting a new implementation of fast algorithm for color transformation utilizing 3D look-up tables. We focus on highly parallel nature of the proposed method and employ the GPU to perform the color calculations side-by-side. The paper is comparing the performance of the implementation of the algorithm on the CPU and on the GPU
