    Integrating IPTV and Social networking

    We know that the elderly comprise the highest proportion of television viewers. In the past we have witnessed elderly people struggling with the new technologies and outright rejecting technologies as a result of its complexity. We propose a system to help people keep up with new technologies, such as IPTV and social networks with reduced efforts. We specifically propose a system to integrate IPTV to social networking website with an aid of mobile phone. This system uses speech to text technology as input to reduce the difficulty involved in interaction while viewing television. As speech is more convenient and natural way of expression than text, we anticipate that people in other age groups can also benefit from the system

    Integration of Natural Language Processing Chains in Content Management Systems

    Modern web application hype revolves around a rich user interface experience. A lesser-known aspect of modern applications is the use of techniques that enable the intelligent processing of information and add value that can’t be delivered by other means. This article presents a scalable, maintainable and inter-operable approach for combining content management functionalities with natural language processing (NLP) tools. The software, based on this architecture, is open for chaining various NLP tools and integration of languages in a standardized manner. As a demonstration of the concept, we have developed two web sites using a content management system, featuring the English NLP based language processing chain. Language processing chains for Bulgarian, Croatian, German, German, Greek, Polish and Romanian languages are in a process of development and integration

    Storysculpturing

    Storytelling is a core element of the design of Serious Games. Building a story is traditionally implemented by carefully chaining narrative blocks. This paper presents an approach utilizing a reverse method – stories are built via removal of blocks. The internal structure is briefly discussed along with the advantages of using this approach – the possibility to dynamically shape a story depending on the goals. Special attention is paid on the didactical modeling, the representation of competences and their relation to the story. Discussed are the game and the business perspectives fostered by the approach and a way of as-sessment that utilized the specific features of the reversed storytelling

    Supporting Interactive IPTV Apps with an Enterprise Resource Bus

    Delivering TV services via internet protocols over high-speed connections is commonly referred to as IPTV (Internet Protocol TeleVision). A particularly interesting aspect of IPTV is the augmentation of the subscriber’s TV experience with interactive applications (apps). Due to the service-oriented infrastructure of many IPTV platforms it is fairly easy to integrate 3rd party services and expose them in form of IPTV apps. However, due to the very competitive market in which IPTV providers operate, they are forced to minimize their costs and thus avoid costly customer complaints. This in turn introduces the need for highly dependable IPTV apps/web services with minimal downtimes. This paper focuses on the development of dependable web services for IPTV. Using Brewer’s CAP theorem the paper investigates the role of state-management within web services and presents the idea of the Enterprise Resource Bus (ERB) and an evaluation of its Erlang implementation

    Storyboard Design for Adaptive E-learning Based on Learning Styles

    The article discusses the methodology taken for instructional design of adaptive courses based on learner character such as learner goals and preferences, learner style and, as well, learner performance and satisfaction level. The adaptive course is presented by storyboard graph, whose nodes are pages with learning content, but paths in it represent different pedagogical strategies set by the instructor. This approach was used in ADOPTA - adaptive technology enhanced platform for edutainment, in order to develop a course on XML. It is consistent with a new conceptual model for adaptive hypermedia and uses a family of Honey and Mumford learning styles

    A Study of Users Expectations for Metadata Repositories of Educational Resources

    This paper presents the role of contemporary digital libraries with educational resources in Europe. The importance of enriching digital resources with complete, descriptive and accurate metadata is discussed as well as how these metadata are supported within an European project – Share.TEC. The paper presents the results of a workshop with members of the project target group. The participants were asked to complete a questionnaire and provide feedback about specific issues related to the metadata of digital resources for teacher education community. The results of the workshop are discussed and analysed. They were used for future improvements of the Share.TEC system

    This paper presents a survey of recent extractive query-based summarization techniques. We explore approaches for single document and multi-document summarization. Knowledge-based and machine learning methods for choosing the most relevant sentences from documents with respect to a given query are considered. Further, we expose tailored summarization techniques for particular domains like medical texts. The most recent developments in the field are presented with opinion summarization of blog entries
