From George Baxter to Edmund Evans: Colour-Printing Methods with Wood Blocks in the Victorian Era
The English engraver and printmaker George Baxter (1804-1867) invented a colour-printing method patented in 1835 by means of a combination of metal plate and wood blocks. A number of studies have reported that the Baxter process had a large impact on the birth of Chromoxylography (colour wood engraving) practiced by wood engravers like George Cargill Leighton and Edmund Evans from 1850s, but few have compared both methods in detail. The present paper deals with the technical and stylistic characteristics of the Baxter process and its uniqueness. Through the research in Victoria & Albert Museum in London, we studied the difference between Baxter's prints and other's colour prints with wood blocks such as William Savage's method in 1822 and Evans's Chromoxylography. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the Baxter process was not an ancestor of Chromoxylography but a 'strange brother' that was born from the method of Savage.departmental bulletin pape
Structure design for wheelchair climbing stairs
Abstract In recent years, barrier-free is being proceeded for the disabled and the aged people. Due to this influence, facility equipped with slope and elevator continue to grow steadily. However, considering access to facilities that are not equipped with them, a wheelchair is difficult to climb up the stairs on their own. We design the structure of wheelchair based on the rocker bogie mechanism, which could climb three types of actual stairs in Tokyo Polytechnic University. Additionally, in order to obtain stability, we would focus on the center point of weight (CM: Center of Mass) as straight as possible with respect to the slope of the stairs.departmental bulletin pape
Traditional preparation method of “SASAIROBENI” rouge derived from fresh safflower flower heads and its improvement
BENIMOCHI was processed from fresh flower heads of safflower produced in Yamagata Prefecture by a traditional method. SASAIROBENI rouge was extracted from the BENIMOCHI by combination the traditional method and the modified method. In the study, modern separation processes with membrane filter and centrifuge were newly added as the modified method. As the results, the BENIMOCHI of 4.5 g was obtained from the 100 flower heads, and the safflower red pigment of 0.26 g was obtained from the BENIMOCHI of 100 g. Therefore, it is expected that about 8000 flower heads are needed to produce the SASAIROBENI rouge of 1 g by these methods.departmental bulletin pape
Ubiquitel: A Virtual Finger Drummer Displaying the Presence of Performers
The presence of performers is of great worth in performing arts, including music. On the other hand, various techniques have been devised so that we can easily enjoy music regardless of time or place so far. Although such technology is spe-cialized in recording and reproducing audio signals in music, it is insufficient to display the presence of performers. As a foothold to display the presence of such performers, several studies have been attempted to transmit the presence of a human being to a remote place by using a robot that imitates the appearance, motion, and texture of an actual human being. This paper aims to achieve both the convenience of digital music performance media and displaying the presence of per-formers, and proposes a virtual finger drummer named "Ubiquitel", which displays the presence of performers by several rhythm tapping devices simulating real fingers. Then, from feedback obtained through exhibition activities of the prototype, this paper shows that having a physical entity as a part of the body and imitating the performance played a major role in dis-playing the presence of performers.departmental bulletin pape

Cognitive Transformation of Chinese University Students Who Have Experienced Sustainable Japanese-Language Education : A Focus on 'Performance Reviews'
We have researched the implementation of Japanese Language Education for Sustainability adopted in a Chinese university as a primary course of study under the title “Comprehensive Japanese”. The scope of this research ranges from the analysis of the process that transforms participating student’s cognizance of the social globalization challenge to the clarification of the significance of the implementation itself.
Analysis of student’s “performance reviews” and written compositions has enabled us to recognize the cognitive stages that one may pass through: “a superficial understanding of confronting globalization”, “the confirmation of background problems”, “recognition of the impacts on other countries with problems”, and “the conflict over the gap between one’s self and society”. It can be said that overcoming the conflict as well as recognizing the link between social globalization and one’s self not only demonstrate the significance of the implementation but also suggest a long-term need to continue it.
We consider it important from here on to continue an activity that supports the pursuit of a sustainable way of life and whose aim is to help develop, in stages, young people’s will to work toward a society in which the self is the starting point.10Vol.23 10P論文Paperdepartmental bulletin pape
