The main aim of this paper is to analyse the biblical figure of King David as a prophet based on the apocryphal text of “David’s Compositions,”which is part of the Great Psalms Scroll from Cave 11 at Qumran (11Q5 xxvii 2–11). The paper consists of three parts. The first part is an analysis of the text of“David’s Compositions” itself. It includes the Hebrew text with its translation into English, the context, and the detailed exegesis of the composition with a strong emphasis on the interpretation of the ending of v. l.3 and the first half of vv. l.4 and l.11 (col. xxvii), relevant to the subject of the presentation. The objective of the second part is to look, in the context of David’s Compositions,” at the terminology defining the function and figure of the prophet in the Qumran Caves Scrolls. This enables us to limit a huge number of manuscripts only to those in which this terminology occurs. Their content is further verified in terms of their connection to the figure of David. The final, third part concerns the interpretation of three fragments from 4QMMT

The article raises the issue of papal primacy in Christian antiquity. It describes the Quartodeciman controversy of the 2nd century, in which the Church in Rome played a significant role. Based on the account of its course - taken from Eusebius of Caesarea - it is shown that the Bishop of Rome, Victor, was aware of his jurisdictional responsibility for Churches located outside Rome. This also means that the concept of the papacy existed already at the end of the 2nd century and Victor is the first pope in history in the full sense of the word. Using the inductive method in the analysis of patristic sources, the article creates a synthetic vision of the problem formulated in the topic, at the same time responding to certain counter-arguments made by other scholars who do not share such a reading of historical facts

The Earthly Paradise in Early Christian Latin Poetry

    No full text
Analizie poddane zostały passusy z De ave Phoenice Laktancjusza, De iudicio Domini Pseudo-Tertuliana, Cento Vergilianus de laudibus Dei Faltonii Betity Proby, Cathemerinon Prudencjusza, Alethii Wiktoriusza, Laudes Dei Drakoncjusza oraz z De spiritalis historiae gestis Awita. The aim of this article is to analyze selected depictions of the earthly paradise in early Christian poetry, with a focus on the interweaving of biblical imagery and elements drawn from classical literature. The analysis examines passages from De ave Phoenice by Lactantius, De iudicio Domini by Pseudo-Tertullian, Cento Vergilianus de laudibus Dei by Proba, Cathemerinon by Prudentius, Alethia by Victorinus, Laudes Dei by Dracontius, and De spiritalis historiae gestis by Avitus. The poets drew not only on biblical sources – such as the imagery of Eden, the „Garden of God” from the Book of Ezekiel, and the New Jerusalem from the Book of Revelation—but also on pagan poetry, particularly the description of the Elysian Fields in Book VI of Virgil’s Aeneid and the Golden Age in Book I of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Common characteristics of the earthly paradise include its location in the east, on a high mountain, eternal spring, the absence of dangerous weather phenomena, nature spontaneously bearing fruit, and a source from which the four rivers flow. Paradisus terrestris was portrayed as being filled with light, pleasant fragrances, and music. A frequent inhabitant of the earthly paradise was the mythical phoenix, a symbol of resurrection, which would once again open the path to paradise for humanity.

Intellectus Spei: Hope as Trusting in the Uncertain. Thinking with Pope Francis’s "Spes non Confundit"

    No full text
This article explores intellectus spei - understanding hope as a rational and existential virtue of openness - situated at the intersection of philosophy, theology, and ethics. Drawing on thinkers such as Paul Ricoeur, Martha C. Nussbaum, Richard Kearney, and Karl Rahner, the author presents hope not as emotional optimism or probabilistic expectation but as a form of rationality grounded in trust and imaginative engagement with the unknown. In response to global uncertainty and technological determinism, this article interprets Pope Francis’s Spes non confundit as a call to reclaim hope as an act of trust, not prediction. This article moves from a phenomenology of hope in uncertainty (Section 2), through its ontological and theological dimensions (Section 3), toward its transformative role in forgiveness and mercy (Section 4). Section 5 critiques the distortions of hope under materialism and nihilism, while Section 6 turns to the eschatological horizon, where hope finds fulfillment in divine justice and eternal life. The article’s conclusion presents Christian hope as a form of life and a “wisdom of uncertainty” - an existential stance that neither escapes reality nor succumbs to it but transforms it through trust in God’s unseen promise. Intellectus spei thus emerges as a structural shift in thought: from closure to openness, from the calculable to the creative, and from resignation to responsibility

Rewriting the Biblical Feminine. A Reading of Marie Krysinska's “Eve”

    No full text
This article presents an analysis of Marie Krysinska’s poem “Eve,” in which the poet rewrites the biblical myth in order to free the protagonist from the burden of original sin. First, the study shows how Krysinska refocuses the narrative on Eve, while creating a feminine Eden where desire and nature unite without guilt. Next, it analyzes the reformulation of the relationship with the serpent and the questioning of categories of gender, body, and voice. Finally, it highlights the erasure of male figures and the interruption of the narrative before the Fall, which transform Eve into an autonomous and innocent figure, emblematic of a poetic and feminist reinterpretation of the myth

Istniejąca od 2007 roku Pracownia Inwentaryzacji i Digitalizacji Zabytków Uniwersytetu Papieskiego Jana Pawła II w Krakowie prowadzi systematyczne prace inwentaryzacyjne w kościołach archidiecezji krakowskiej i diecezji bielsko-żywieckiej. Mniejszą część materiałów opracowano w ramach wspomnianego portalu Sakralne Dziedzictwo Małopolski, a większą w projekcie unijnym Cyfrowe Archiwum Archidiecezji Krakowskiej (https://caak.upjp2.edu.pl); w sumie udostępniono ponad 1200 jednostek archiwalnych (ok. 1 mln zdjęć). Established in 2007, the Laboratory for Inventory and Digitzation of Monuments of the Political University of John Paul II in Kraków onducts systematic inventory work in churches of the Archdiocese of Kraków and the Diocese of Bielsko-Żywiec. Over the course of 18 years, inventory cards were developed and modern photographic documentation was created in over 200 diocesan churches and several monasteries, including the Benedictine Abbey in Staniątki, the Reformed monasteries in Wieliczka, Pilica and Kęty, the Bernardines in Alwernia, and the Cistercians in Mogiła. The result is a unique database, which currently includes 26,178 works of art and two websites. The first - Artistic Crafts in Lesser Poland (https://ram.upjp2.edu.pl) - provides access to all works of artistic craftsmanship developed as part of the NPRH project. The second, finances by EU funds - Sacred Heritage of Lesser Poland (https;//sdm.upjp2.edu.pl) - contains scientific studies of selected (over 4,000) most valuable works of art in the broader context of the history of towns and parishes, the outline of which was developed as part of the project. As a result, a printed catalogue of the art collection of the Benedictine Abbey in Staniątki was also developed. In addition to works of art, the Laboratory has undertaken the systematic digitisation of church archives, from the oldest parish registers to the records of episcopal visitations and the files of the bishop's offices in Kraków and Lviv. A smaller part of the materials was developed as part of the aforementioned website titled Sacred Heritage of Lesser Poland, and a larger part in the EU project Digital Archive of the Archdiocese of Kraków (https://caak.upjp2.edu.pl); in total, over 1,200 archival units (approx. 1 million photos) were made available

God’s Hope as a Basis of Human Hope According to Józef Tischner and Hans Urs von Balthasar

    No full text
Artykuł podejmuje problematykę antropologiczno-teologicznego rozumienia pojęcia nadziei chrześcijańskiej w kontekście refleksji Józefa Tischnera i Hansa Ursa von Balthasara. This article examines the problematics of anthropological and theological understanding of the concept of Christian hope in the context of the reflection of Józef Tischner and Hans Urs von Balthasar. This integral view of the issue is characterized by the tendency of both thinkers to go beyond the classical anthropological limitations imposed on the concept of hope towards its fuller Christological and theological understanding. From a methodological and structural standpoint, the analyses conducted in the article cover four main dimensions of Christian hope: religious-historical, anthropological- Christological, theological-dramatic (theodramatic) and soteriological-eschatological. The analyses conducted explain why, for Tischner, hope is not limited to the anthropological aspect, but also includes the theological-Christological dimension, and for von Balthasar, it is not limited only to human hope, but also includes the hope of God. The article concludes with the formulation and justification of two original theses concerning the understanding of hell as an eschatological museum of sin and the understanding of God’s hope as the ultimate basis of human hope in the context of the postulate of universal hope of salvation

The Object and the Sources of Christian Hope in the Pauline Letters

    No full text
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the theme of hope in the Corpus Paulinum. The Apostle to the Gentiles uses the term “hope” frequently, in both its noun and verb forms, understanding it as the expectation of something in the future. While he sometimes relates this expectation to temporal realities, he also distinguishes another kind of hope—Christian hope—which refers to eternity. The object of this hope is described in various ways, yet it can be summed up as eternal life in heaven. This Christian hope is grounded above all in the person and work of Jesus Christ—a work that has already taken place (and is thus a fact) and which, for the one who accepts it in faith, becomes the foundation for expecting its fulfillment in the sphere of eternity. The community of such believers constitutes Christ’s Church of the New Covenant, the temple and sphere of the Holy Spirit’s activity. The Spirit’s person and work serve as a “deposit” guaranteeing believers’ future and eternal destiny, and thus as another source of their hope regarding life after death. In addition, this hope rests on the enduring and imperishable character of Christ’s sacrifice and the New Covenant between God and humanity established in Him, as well as on God’s revelation in the incarnation of the Son and in the Gospel, which imparts to believers knowledge of the spiritual and eternal reality
