The Birth of the Cult of St Menas

    No full text
It is not necessary to go through all the stages of initiation into the intricacies of hagiographical studies to immediately recognize, when reading the works related to the dossier of St Menas, that we are dealing with a subgenre of hagiography which contemporary scholars term “fictional hagiography”. The figure of the Saint and the events of his life were invented by anonymous authors and editors in various ways, according to their own tastes and the anticipated tastes of their audience. This article seeks to identify the narrative elements, terms, and descriptions of events that serve as markers of this specific genre. My aim is not to reconstruct the biography of the saint, but to gain a better understanding of the religiosity of those who came to Abū Mīnā, particularly their expectations. Researchers of the St Menas dossier are fortunate to have at their disposal extensive findings from archaeological excavations, which enable not only the dating of the sanctuary’s establishment and expansion but also aid in reconstructing the spaces and buildings where the cult of the Saint took place. While literary texts require ongoing critical assessment of their reliability, the extensive sanctuary, its furnishings, churches, houses, and streets relieve us from an excessive level of skepticism. Although the article’s title suggests a focus on texts, archaeology assists the historian in creating a comprehensive picture of what occurred at Abū Mīnā

Why post-gaming return to reality matters: the mediating role of gaming disorder symptoms in risky loot box use

    No full text
This study investigates the indirect relationship between post-gaming return to reality and risky loot box use (RLBU) via gaming disorder symptoms (GD) among active video game players. Drawing on the components model of behavioral addiction and Kruglanski’s theory of goal systems, it explores how difficulty disengaging from gaming - especially when in-game goals remain unmet - may increase engagement with loot boxes (LBs), a gambling-like monetization mechanic. The study hypothesizes that difficulties in returning to reality after gaming are linked to increased RLBU, both directly and indirectly through GD symptoms: salience, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal, conflict, and relapse. A sample of 924 active Polish video gamers (476 female; M = 27.69, SD = 5.26; age 18–35), all with LB experience, completed the Risky Loot Box Index (RLI), Internet Gaming Disorder Test, and Post-Gaming Return Scale (PGRS), measuring RLBU, GD symptoms, and return to reality after gaming, respectively. Findings showed that the relationship between post-gaming return to reality and RLBU is fully mediated by GD symptoms. However, only three - tolerance, withdrawal, and conflict - showed statistically significant indirect effects. These results support early identification and intervention strategies for at-risk gamers and deepen our understanding of how gaming motivation, addiction, and monetization models intersect

The Origin and Narrative Function of the Conquest of the Land (2 Kgs 17:5a) in the Account of the Fall of Samaria (2 Kgs 17:3–6)

    No full text
The conquest of the land in 2 Kgs 17:5 is the key element in the account of the fall of Samaria (2 Kgs 17:3–6). The source analysis of this verse leads to the conclusion that its shorter version, witnessed by the Old Latin Palimpsestus Vindobonensis (La115) where the conquest of the land is not mentioned, may be the oldest recoverable form of this text, allowing for the reconstruction of the true Old Greek text and its Hebrew Vorlage, in this regard alternative to the longer version attested to by the Masoretic text. The survey on the possible reasons underlying the postulated textual expansion in 2 Kgs 17:5MT indicates that the mention of the attack on the entire country adds drama to the events narrated, emphasises the totality of the Assyrian invasion, and makes the capture of Samaria more significant. In contrast, the lectio brevior of the OL appears to be less dramatic and somehow ‘flat’ from the narrative point of view. In this way the narrative of the lectio longior takes on an increasingly anti-Samarian tone disclosing possible pragmatic motives underlying postulated textual expansions. Historical contextualisation of the events narrated in 2 Kgs 17:5MT completes the picture, which seems to be much more complex than the straightforward biblical narrative would suggest. The final literary context in which these events are narrated indicates that the biblical editor is mostly interested in theodicy to depict the total defeat of Samaria and the definitive end of the Kingdom of Israel in theological terms. In this regard, the remark about the conquest of the land in the MT, in later Greek versions, and the Targum, intensifies the anti-Samarian rhetoric of the biblical text in comparison with those textual versions which do not mention it (OL and several Greek testimonies)

Wydział Nauk Humanistycznych, Instytut Literaturoznawstwa; promotor: prof. dr hab. This dissertation examines the literary legacy of Jan Chądzyński (c. 1602-1660), a Jesuit and author of political and social treatises, anti Protestant satires, and panegyrical works. It reconstructs his biography, delineates the scope of his writings, and situates his views within the broader framework of Jesuit political and social thought in Poland-Lithuania and Europe. The primary objective of the study is to elucidate Chądzyńskie ideas concerning the political structure and reform of the Commonwealth, social justice, and confessional polemics. The inquiry is grounded in prevailing scholarly hypotheses regarding the Jesuits’ alleged political reorientation following the Zebrzydowskie Rokosz, as well as Chądzyńskie stance on marginalized social groups and Protestants. His writings are analyzed in relation to the thought of other early modern Jesuit writers in Poland and across Europe, with attention to key categories of political and social theory and polemical theology. Through the examination of Chądzyńskie ideas, the dissertation emphasizes the need for a more nuanced understanding of the role of the Society of Jesus in Poland-Lithuania. It further advocates for broader comparative studies that would embed the intellectual legacy of Polish and Lithuanian Jesuits within the wider European discourse

Wydział Nauk Społecznych, Instytut Pedagogiki; promotor: prof. Marian SurdackiDysertacja przedstawia rekonstrukcję i analizę działalności oświatowej katolickich liceów w Lublinie w latach 1989-2019 – zagadnienie wcześniej nieeksplorowane. Drugą, komplementarną część badań stanowiły wywiady z dyrektorami, nauczycielami i uczniami. Rozprawa ma układ problemowo-chronologiczny. Podstawy teoretyczne zaprezentowano w pierwszych dwóch rozdziałach. Pierwszy zawiera rozstrzygnięcia natury definicyjnej. Drugi omawia dzieje oraz aktualną sytuację szkolnictwa katolickiego w Polsce. Kolejne partie pracy przedstawiają wyniki przeprowadzonych badań empirycznych. Rozdział trzeci ukazuje początki badanych placówek oraz charakterystykę organów prowadzących. W rozdziale czwartym opisano społeczność nauczycielską. Społeczność uczniowską ukazano w rozdziale piątym. Rozdział szósty traktuje o pracy dydaktycznej. Ostatni, siódmy rozdział naświetla wychowanie i jego patriotyczno-religijny wymiar. Pracę zamykają konkluzje, bibliografia oraz aneksy z kwestionariuszami wywiadów. The dissertation presents a reconstruction and analysis of the educational activities of Catholic secondary schools in Lublin in the period 1989-2019 - a previously unexplored subject. At the time, there were four Catholic secondary schools in the city - two of which still exist, two of which have been closed down. Each school was run by a different body, which affected its performance. In order to increase the cognitive value of the work, it was decided to triangulate the methods. The basis of the research conducted was document analysis. The second, complementary part of the research consisted of interviews with principals, teachers and students. The dissertation has a problem-chronological layout. The theoretical basis is presented in the first two chapters. The first chapter contains definitions. The second discusses the history and current situation of Catholic education in Poland. The next parts of the work introduce the results of conducted empirical research. The third chapter discusses the beginnings of the educational institutions under study and the characteristics of their governing bodies. The fourth chapter depicts the teaching community. The student community is portrayed in the fifth chapter. The sixth chapter deals with teaching and learning. The last, seventh chapter explores rearing and its patriotic-religious dimension. The work is completed with conclusions, a bibliography and appendices with interview questionnaires

Judicial Independence in Croatia Under European Scrutiny: Analysis of the Ruling Hann-Invest and Others (Or How to Save Judges from Other Judges)

    No full text
This contribution analyses the first case presented to the Court of Justice of the EU that questions the independence of the judiciary in Croatia. The case has several unique aspects. First, it addresses threats to judicial independence from within the judiciary itself, which is unusual, as most cases typically involve external pressures from the executive or legislative branches. Second, while the judicial practice under scrutiny was deemed contrary to EU law, interestingly the Court explained to Croatian authorities how they could rectify the situation. Third, the Advocate General’s Conclusions largely diverge from the Court’s ruling. While this is not so uncommon, it proves that this was not an easy case. Last, the case challenges and ultimately deems unjust a judicial practice that persists in Croatia as a remnant of the country’s communist past and which draws inspiration from an era when judges were subject to a strict judicial hierarchy to the detriment of their own autonomous opinion. The paper delves into the specifics of the Croatian case. It compares the legal reasoning of the Advocate General and that the Court of Justice, illustrating their differing approaches. The contribution explores other arguments that were not raised in the Conclusions that, interestingly, were included in the Court’s judgement. The Court ruled that Croatia’s practice – where a registrar judge, not involved in the case, could override a decision made by the court handling the case, and where an extended section of the court could also force the judges handling the case to give up their legal reasoning before they could even rule on the case – was incompatible with Article 19 TEU.This article was conducted within the framework of the project PID2021-126765NB-I00 of the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain

"Via Ethica" in Justifying the Credibility of Christianity and the Church According to Marian Rusecki

    No full text
The article presents via ethica in justifying the credibility of Christianity and the Church according to Marian Rusecki (1942–2012). The professor from Lublin, although he was the creator of both the so-called models and an impressive set of credibility arguments, he did not comprehensively develop via ethica. The purpose of the article is to present the basic assumptions of that type of argumentation found in his work. A thorough analysis of his scientific achievements allowed for a critical synthesis and a comprehensive exposition of the methodological conditions of via ethica in Rusecki’s approach. In demonstrating the credibility of Christianity and the Church, within via ethica, the fundamental issue is to define the relationship between religion and ethics. There are many different relations between them and they need each other, therefore, it is a mistake to separate them or to reduce religion only to ethical principles. The foundation of via ethica is the individual existence and dignity of man; these constitute the priority values of religion and ethics. The promotion of the revealed dignity of the human person and the apologia for the human rights that stem from it constitute the credibility of the Christian ethos. The absolutely unique feature of Christianity is the ethos of following Jesus Christ. According to Rusecki, the essence of via ethica is based on the outright uniqueness of Christian ethics. Ethical indications constitute the originality of Christianity in relation to other religions

Medieval Slavic Translations of the "Miracles of Saint Menas": Sources and Textual Problems

    No full text
A collection of miracles attributed to St Menas appeared in medieval Old Church Slavonic literature as a result of contacts between Orthodox Slavs in the Balkans and Byzantine Christian literature. By the 10th century, at least two distinct translations of the had likely been produced in Bulgaria. These translations have been preserved in Slavic collection manuscripts (dating from the late 13th to the 17th centuries) in both an abridged version (a compilation of several miracles) and a full translation of the entire collection, comprising 13 miracles. This article presents the current state of research on the subject, the most important sources, the hypothesized routes of migration of Greek sources into Old Church Slavonic (and later Church Slavonic) literature, and a proposed reconstruction of the transmission process of these translations within the Slavic textual tradition. The research presented in this article has been funded by the National Science Centre (Poland) under the project “Across centuries, languages, and cultures: The Miracles of Saint Menas as a historical source, literary composition and liturgical text”, project no. UMO-2021/41/B/HS1/00550
