Plato on Rethoric and Virtue
Socrates (Plato) had a very dim view of rhetoric as practiced in the Athens of his day, which he was disinclined to dignify even with the name of an art. He had at the same time a strong notion of what a genuine art of rhetoric would consist of. In this paper I plan to give a rapid overview of his opinions in the matter, drawing largely on two major sources, the Gorgias and Phaedrus, followed by what seem to me to be the principal strengths and weaknesses in his argument. I shall then go on to ask about the degree to which what he has to say (or some of it, at any rate) is and should be of continuing interest and concern.Sócrates (Platão) tinha uma frágil visão da Retórica como era praticada em sua época, em Atenas, o que não o inclinava a dignificá-la com o nome de arte.
This paper deals with two criticisms Aristotle addresses to Heraclitus. In the first one Heraclitus is criticized because he does not respect the law of contradiction; in the second one Aristotle attacks him for not having a speech “easy to read” (euanagnoston) and “easy to understand” (euphraston). These criticisms do not take into account the fact that Heraclitus’ writings were composed following the patterns and conditions of an oral culture.
The interpretation of the platonic cosmogony presents one of its more controversial aspects in the appreciation of the meaning of the creational act. The interpretations given so far clash with the ‘literalists’ and the ‘alegorists’ with passages that show the inadequacies of both approaches. Our work will analyse the different arguments concerning: a) the eternity of becoming; b) the eternity of the soul; c) the supposed representation of the chaos and its relationship with necessity; d) the role of the demiurge and the noûs; e) the theological model of the platonic physics.
The issue of God, which was ideologically part of medieval mentality and practice, changed at the onset of the Renaissance and gave rise to a new perspective about man. This paper intends to investigate that change – from God to man – taking into consideration man as “measure”, able to create himself is freedom.

This work intends to approach the issues of virtuous desire in the aristotelian ethics and the role played out by passions and emotions in the rational choice that brings forth virtue. We intend to show the relationship that passions and emotions have with sensibility and imagination as well as with the intellect and practical reason. This study continues our previous reflection published in essays about the aristotelian doctrine of phrónesis.
Five works of art in Plato
If it is possible to say that there is a theory of Art in Plato, it is related to the reflexion of the philosopher about the World Soul and Man’s Soul, whether in the Timaeus, in Republic, Phaedon or Laws. I intend to discurs other aspects of this issues studyng the existing parallelism between the demiurges of the world soul and the ideal pólis as art-object both fashioned by an intellect that contemplates Good.
The purpose of this work is to discuss the arguments from chap. 5 and 6, book I of de Politics of Aristotle highlighting schematically in syllogistic form, the sctructure, coherence and validity of Aristotle’s reasoning. I will also show how Aristotle’s arguments and conclusions are both more and less controversial than current scholarship has generally supposed.O objeto deste trabalho é o de discutir os argumentos do cap.
