Get PDFIt is usually assumed that thinkers came to be considered as philosophers in the early decades of the 5th century B.C. If that presupposition is correct, none of the intellectuals of an earlier time, from Thales to Empedocles, whom we were taught to honor as philosophers, were considered as such during their lifetime. They would have received the name “philosophers” as an a posteriori honor, from 330 and 345 B.C. In this paper, the author analyses the ways in which Thales was honored as one of Athens’ sophoi.Presume-se que pensadores tenham começado a ser considerados como filósofos nos últimos decênios do séc. V a.C. Se for assim, nenhum dos intelectuais das épocas posteriores, de Tales a Empédocles, que fomos educados a honrar como filósofos, o foram considerados em vida. Teriam recebido o nome de “filósofos” como honra a posteriori, a partir de 330 e 345 a.C. No presente artigo, o autor analisa o modo como Tales era honrado como um dos sophoi em Atenas

Get PDFClassical Greek models of association can be divided into two major types: the thíasos and the hetairía. While the first is more directly connected with the common practice of religious ritual, with the sharing of rites and knowledge of the mysteries, the hetairía is closely connected with the idea of an association of philoí, in the political sense usually attributed to it, of allies and comrades in a private group. The Pythagorean community is considered to be a hetairía, but many of its characteristics point to the model of a thíasos. However, neither definition seems to fit the singularities of koinonía which characterize the Pythagorean way of living.Os modelos gregos clássicos de associações são fundamentalmente de dois tipos: o thíasos e a hetairía. Enquanto o primeiro está mais diretamente ligado à prática comum de cultos, à partilha de ritos e saberes mistéricos, a hetairía está mais ligada à idéia de uma associação de philoí, no sentido político de aliados e confrades que se encontram em um clube privado. A comunidade pitagórica é quase que unanimamente considerada pela tradição uma hetairía, e todavia muitas de suas características remeteriam mais claramente para o modelo do thíasos. Ambas as definições não parecem dar conta das singularidades da koinonía, que caracteriza o modo de vida pitagórico

Get PDFThe text is concerned with the first two waves of the Platonic Politéia, discussed through conceptual readings of the role of women in the construction of a fair city. In the demonstrative symbology of the text, one finds the télos of the ideal of a city governed by the philosopher. However, the first two waves portray themselves as a catalyst, to be analysed from different controversial perspectives. The greatest challenge one faces in Platonic texts is to read the Politéia from the view of reception theory, considering the work to be a true potential of effects, in which the principles of isonomy, identity and difference validate one another in a paradoxical manner.O texto discorre sobre as duas primeiras ondas da Politéia platônica, discutidas por meio de planos de leitura do papel das mulheres na construção da cidade justa. Na simbologia demonstrativa da obra encontra-se o télos maior do ideal de uma cidade governada pelo filósofo. No entanto, as duas primeiras ondas ressoam como verdadeiro ponto de incitação, a ser analisado de várias perspectivas argumentativas. O grande desafio que o texto da Politéia apresenta é de ser lido nos moldes de certa estética da recepção, tomando a obra como verdadeiro potencial de efeitos, na qual princípios de isonomia, identidade e diferença se validam de forma paradoxal

Get PDFThis paper aims at suggesting that the expression “the enemies of Philebus” (Phil. 44 B6) does not refer to Democritus, nor to Antisthenes or Speusippus, but rather to the philosopher Antiphon. The hypothesis can be made plausible both by means of an analysis of some fragments of Antiphon, and by the assumption that the Platonic expression is part of his strategy of siding with the anti-hedonists in order to preserve the Socratic inheritance about the treatment of the passions as well as to highlight his new conception of the nature of pleasure.O texto sugere que a expressão “os inimigos de Filebo” (Fil. 44 B6) não se refere a Demócrito, nem a Antístenes ou a Espeusipo, mas ao sofista Antifonte. Economic factors were closely connected to the essence of aristocratic ethics. In this way, assessment of wealth was intrinsic to the ethical aspect for the Ancient Greeks. Therefore, an inquiry into the ancient Greek economy will concern not only questions of politics but also equally the analysis of ethics and the study of values in general.Este artigo analisa, a partir de uma investigação sobre a relação entre areté, nobreza e riqueza nos poemas homéricos, qual era o significado essencial da ética aristocrática arcaica. Os aspectos econômicos estavam em íntima conexão com a essência da ética aristocrática. Do mesmo modo, o juízo de riqueza para os antigos gregos era intrínseco aos aspectos éticos. Por essa razão, uma investigação acerca da economia grega antiga não se relacionará apenas com as questões políticas, relacionar-se-á igualmente com a análise ética e com o estudo dos valores em geral
