Ecological analysis of infectious diseases, healthcare access, and socioeconomic factors on stunting prevalence in West Sumatra Indonesia

    Get PDF
Stunting is a condition of growth failure characterized by height below the expected standard for their age. The prevalence of stunting in West Sumatra has fluctuated above 20% between 2021 and 2023, highlighting its status as a public health issue. Unaddressed stunting in early childhood can adversely affect learning capacity and elevate the risk of non-communicable diseases later in life. This ecological study analyzes factors associated with stunting prevalence in West Sumatra using secondary data from 2021 sourced from the Health Office, Social Office, Central Bureau of Statistics, and the National Population and Family Planning Board across 19 districts/cities. The dependent variable was stunting prevalence, while the independent variables included acute respiratory infections (ARI), vitamin A supplementation, antenatal care (ANC), family planning, poverty, families at risk of stunting, and Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) beneficiaries. Statistical analyses using Pearson and Spearman tests identified significant positive associations between stunting prevalence and ARI percentage (p=0,020), poverty level (p=0,023), and CCT beneficiaries (p=0,028). Conversely, ANC coverage showed a significant negative association with the prevalence of stunting (p=0,021). In conclusion, the prevalence of stunting in West Sumatra in 2021 is influenced by various factors, including ARI, poverty levels, PKH beneficiaries, and ANC coverage

    Get PDF
There are variations in the prevalence of stunting cases at the village level in Kerinci Regency. There have been no studies on the spatial distribution and risk factors of stunting cases in Kerinci Regency. This study aimed to determine the risk factors and spatial distribution of stunting. This research was conducted in Kerinci Regency from March to November 2020 using a case-control design and a total sampling technique. The study participants consisted of 223 patients and 223 controls. Children who experienced stunting were recorded at the health office. The controls were non-stunted children with an age range (±3 months) and sex who came from the same village as the cases—data collection through interview techniques and observation of the Mother and Child Health book. The chi-square test, logistic regression, and spatial distribution analysis were performed using the open-source software SatScan 10,1 and ArGIS 3,30. The analysis shows stunting cases clustered in Kayu Aro, Gunung Tujuh, and Keliling Danau Districts. A low father's education level (aOR=1,76), father's height <161 cm (aOR=1,52), mother's height <150 cm (aOR=1,83), and incomplete immunization status (aOR=1,6) were risk factors for stunting. In conclusion, cases of stunting clustered in three sub-districts, and the leading risk factor was the mother's height. The health office should make specific intervention efforts before and during pregnancy and focus on cluster-indicated areas

The prevalence of stunting is still high in urban areas. Maternal factors such as height, education, occupation, antenatal visits, and nutritional status have increased stunting in urban areas. The study aims to analyze the maternal factors that influence the incidence of stunting among children aged 24-59 months in urban areas. The case-control design study was conducted in May-July 2019 in Pasuruan City. Samples of 67 cases (HAZ -2SD) were selected by simple random sampling. Data on children's age, gender, birth order, education, occupation, pregnancy classes, and antenatal visits were collected by interviewing respondents using a questionnaire. Data on birth weight, maternal age during pregnancy, maternal upper arm circumference during pregnancy, and maternal height were obtained from the MCH Handbook. The chi-square test and Logistic Regression were used for data analysis. The results showed that the maternal nutritional status during pregnancy was associated with the incidence of stunting in urban areas (p= 0,010). In contrast, children's age, gender, birth order, birth weight, maternal age during pregnancy, maternal height, education, occupation, pregnancy classes, and antenatal visits were not associated (p> 0,05). The incidence of stunting was 3,37 times higher in mothers with MUAC < 23,5 cm during pregnancy (OR= 3,37). In conclusion, maternal nutritional status during pregnancy is the main predictor of stunting among children aged 24-59 months in urban areas

Prevention strategies for diabetes have been found to minimize the risk of the disease through lifestyle treatments such as physical exercise and nutrition. Plants with strong antioxidant activity have previously been discovered to be effective therapy for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. A total of 12 English articles were reviewed. Black rice bran, in its raw extract form, modulate the activity of enzymes, hormones, and molecular signaling related to glucose homeostasis in the body. Black rice bran increases the defense of pancreatic β cells against apoptosis. Bioactive substances in black rice bran such as anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, γ-oryzanol regulate diabetes-related molecular signaling which ultimately leads to improvement in glucose levels, insulin levels, restoration and protection of pancreatic β cells against apoptosis. These bioactive substances are also possible in suppressing oxidative stress, increasing antioxidant status and decreasing inflammation which is a common condition in diabetes. The conclusion of this literature review was black rice bran has the potential to have an antidiabetic effect through various mechanisms, in which this effect is possible due to the bioactive substances contained in it
