Effects of enteral nutrition method using continuous feeding on patients in intensive care: A Systematic Review
Patients treated with intensive care are at risk of malnutrition. Enteral nutrition can help to maintain a patient's nutritional needs and digestive system function. However, some complications are associated with enteral feeding, including aspiration and refeeding syndromes. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the effects of enteral feeding methods in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients. Related literature was systematically retrieved from 2019 to 2023 using the ProQuest, PubMed, Clinical Key, Science Direct, and Cochrane Library databases. Specific keyword combinations were applied when searching only for randomized controlled trials (RCT) on enteral feeding in critically ill patients. The results of this study found six articles were selected after screening based on the inclusion criteria. The continuous feeding method was found to improve the achievement of the target nutritional requirements and reduce the risk of aspiration. However, it is not always appropriate to consider circadian rhythm. In conclusion, there are important clinical factors to be considered before selecting the type of enteral access, including the patient’s clinical condition, surgical history, length of anticipated feeding time, and potential risks.
Online nutrition education on anemia and breakfast habits in adolescent girls
The body's iron levels may become insufficient when one is not in the habit of having breakfast, potentially resulting in anemia among adolescents. Online nutrition education on anemia serves as a means to enhance knowledge and breakfast habits among adolescent girls. This study aimed to determine the effect of online nutrition education on anemia on adolescent girls’ breakfast habits. The study design was a cluster randomized trial (CRTs). The subjects were randomly assigned to the treatment group (n = 99) or the control group (n = 101). Research data were collected at SMP Negeri 5 Sukoharjo and SMP Negeri 2 Sukoharjo, which were selected through simple random sampling from March to December 2022. Online nutrition education was directed for six sessions over two weeks with a 1-month reflection. Data on breakfast habits were collected using the Food Record form and analyzed using the Mann–Whitney test. No improvement in breakfast habits was observed in either group. There was no difference in breakfast habits among adolescent girls in the treatment group, who received nutritional education about anemia, and in the control group, who did not (p=0,174). In conclusion, online nutrition education has not been sufficient to improve breakfast habits among adolescent girls.
The comparison of Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) value in obesity and non-obesity
Obesity is a chronic low-grade inflammatory condition that occurs in the White Adipose Tissue (WAT). Diet is the strongest factor regulating energy balance and influencing inflammatory responses in the body. This inflammatory response can be calculated using the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII). The aim of this research was to determine the differences between DII values for obese and non-obese people in the work area of the Sumbersari Public Health Center, Jember Regency, which was carried out from May to June 2023. This was a cross-sectional study with sample selection through a simple random sampling method. Thirty participants were included in each group. Data collection was carried out using the Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), and the data were analyzed using an independent t-test. The normality test was performed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and the data were normally distributed. The results obtained that There was a significant difference (p=0,000) between the DII values of the normal and obese groups. It is known that the average DII value in the normal group was +2,29 and in the obese group was +1,32, indicating that the normal group had a higher pro-inflammatory diet than the obesity group. In conclusion, there was a significant difference between the DII values in obese and non-obese groups in the working area of the Sumbersari Community Health Center, Jember Regency
Eating behaviour: How health concern, self-control and gender influence healthy food choice
Most Indonesians are unable to control their food choice. This factor is due to individual indifference to maintaining health, self-control, and gender. This study aimed to examine the personal factors that can influence healthy food choices. The research method used a quasi-experimental with post-test-only control group design; the total sample included 143 participants aged between 17-25 years. This study was conducted at the Psychology Laboratory of Semarang State University in September 2023. Health concerns and self-control were measured by filling out a questionnaire, and an experimental test was conducted to choose healthy food using the Fake Food Buffet. Data analysis was performed using GLM univariate test. The results of this study indicate that there is a significant influence of health concern and self-control on healthy food choices, but the results of gender analysis on healthy food choices are not significant. This means that individuals who care about health and have strong self-control choose healthy food. However, there were no differences in food choice behaviors between women and men. It can be concluded that personal factors, such as health concerns and self-control, significantly influence the choice of healthy food. This could reduce the level of obesity that will occur in the future
Risk factors of under-fives stunting in low-income households
Stunting prevalence in Indonesia is still high and far from the National medium term development plan 2020-2024 target. As many as 41% of stunted under-fives come from poor households in the stunting focus area of the Bantul Regency. This study assessed the risk factors for stunting in low-income households. This study was conducted in July 2023 in Bantul Regency using an unmatched case-control approach. Using a purposive sampling technique, 156 children under five (78 cases and 78 controls), aged 6-59 months, from low-income families registered in the village and receiving social assistance from the Ministry of Social Affairs, were chosen. Interviews were conducted to gather research data, and a validity- and reliability-tested questionnaire was used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-squared tests, and binary logistic regression. The findings demonstrated a substantial correlation (p0,05) between mothers’ education level, mother’s age, and children’s breastfeeding status. In conclusion, low birth weight and ANC visits are risk factors for stunting among underfives. Low birth weight is the primary cause of stunting in children under five in low-income families.
Comparative analysis of food service satisfaction and nutritional adequacy between private hospitals and academic hospitals in patients with non-communicable diseases
Nutritional services in hospitals aim to provide meals with high nutritional value, safety, appropriate quantity, quality, and satisfactory service. This study aimed to analyze and compare food service satisfaction and nutritional adequacy among patients with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in private and academic hospitals. The study was conducted at the UNS Hospital and YARSI Hospital from October to December. Employing a comparative cross-sectional study design, we included 50 patients with NCD, 25 general (private) hospitals, and 25 teaching hospitals. Satisfaction with food services was assessed using a validated food service satisfaction questionnaire, whereas nutritional adequacy was evaluated using the Comstock questionnaire. Nutrient intake data were processed using the NutriSurvey software. The Mann-Whitney U test was used for the statistical analysis. Our findings revealed significant differences in all food service satisfaction indicators (p<0,005), except for waitstaff friendliness (p=0,077). There were also significant differences in energy, fiber, macronutrient, and micronutrient adequacy levels, except for vitamin C intake, between patients in private and academic hospitals (p<0,005). In conclusion, the level of food services and nutritional adequacy differed significantly between private public and academic hospitals.
The differences in diet quality and physical activity for COVID-19 survivors and non-survivors in Semarang City
