Isolation and characterization of Hexavalent chromium reducing proteus mirabilis isolated from the water of Buriganga River
This project report is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy, 2019.Includes bibliographical references (pages 55-63).Catalogued from PDF version of project reportThis study was conducted by considering the hazardous effects of hexavalent Chromium which is a highly carcinogenic, mutagenic and a teratogenic substance. In this study the sample was collected from Swari Ghat near the Buriganga River in Dhaka. After collecting the sample, it was isolated and purified. Then, Chromium reduction bioassay, antibiotic resistant profile, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and identification of the isolated sample were done. Di-phenyl Carbazide (DPCZ) and 3-(N-morpholino)propanesulfonic acid (MOPS) were used in the Chromium reduction bioassay. Also, in the bioassay, the experiment was done in three different temperature- 25˚C, 37˚C, 42˚C and three different pH 5.5, 7, and 8.5. In the result of bioassay it was observed that the strain had the best capacity to reduce the Chromium concentration at 37˚C and pH 8.5. Moreover, the strain had gone through the antibiotic resistant profile study to observe their resistance towards antibiotics. From this study it was found that cipropfloxacin (CIP5) and ceftriaxone (CRO30) had a strong effect on this strain whereas some other antibiotics such as penicillin (P10), vancomycin (VA30), trimethoprim (STX25), amoxycillin (AML10) did not have any effect on the strain. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration method was used which showed that the strain could tolerate up to 16 mM of Chromium concentration in its surroundings and its MIC was 17 mM. Moreover, to identify the strain, 16s rDNA sequencing was done. A phylogenetic tree was made by using the sequence data and different software which showed that our isolated strain is Proteus mirabilis.Most. Nasrin AktarB. Pharmac
Cultural centre, Hatirjhhel, Dhaka

Survey on patients undergoing treatments for cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancer
This thesis is submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology, 2019.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (page 70-74).Cancer is a disease with an abnormal cell growth and it can invade or spread from one organ to
another. There are some common symptoms noticed for cancer like abnormal bleeding, lumps,
weight loss and change in bowel movement. Using tobacco is one of the major causes for cancer
and that causes 22% of cancer. In addition to that, poor diet, obesity, alcohol consumption may
cause 10% of cancer. Moreover, 15% of cancers occur due to some viruses like Helicobacter
pylori, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, human papillomavirus infection, Epstein–Barr virus and human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Genetic defects can also cause cancers and the chances are 5-
10%. Screening test is most common and initial test for detection of cancer. Some treatments are
followed to control cancer as most of the time this disease cannot be cured. Radiotherapy,
chemotherapy, surgery, hormone therapy, lesser therapy, immunotherapy and some oral
medicines are used for cancer treatment. In 2018, 18.1 million new cancer cases and 9.6 million
cancer deaths were stated. In the same year worldwide an estimated 570,000 cases and 311,000
deaths occur by cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is now the fourth most diagnosed cancer and
fourth leading cause of death among women in whole world. Ovarian cancer is the seventh most
commonly diagnosed cancer and the eighth most common cause of death from cancer over the
world. Ovarian cancer has only 30% of cure rate. For this survey data was collected from 70
patients with different gynecological cancer and then statistical analyzing was done. The result of
this survey showed 94.29% patients are married and 61.43% patients are in between age 35-55.
Both this findings from the patients selected for this survey indicated that the sexually active
women have higher chance to have any of the gynecological cancer. The result of this survey
also showed that 61.43% women are affected by passive smoking. Another finding showed 60%
of patients used to take contraceptive pills for long time. This result implied that taking
contraceptive pills for long time could be a cause of any of these gynecological cancers. There
are no patients from this survey who took vaccines against cervical cancer and none took any
psychological help for fast recovery. Almost 50% of the patients believed in homeopathy and herbal treatments, which actually did not work on these diseases. The survey shows that side
effects are most prominently expressed in patients above the age of 56 years and patients with
stage-3 and stage-4 cancer. Therefore, the findings from this survey indicates that married and
middle-aged women should be more careful to their health and avoid contraceptive pills, passive
smoking and take vaccines for preventing and controlling the disease in a better way.Anika NawarB. Biotechnolog
Isolation and characterization of vibrio spp. from surface water in Dhaka city
This thesis is submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology, 2019.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (page 47-54).Vibrio spp. is an estuarine bacterium prevalent in water bodies throughout the world. Twelve
species of the Vibrioceae family are known to cause diseases in human. The aim of this study
was to investigate the occurrence, biochemical characteristics, antibiotic resistance and
haemolytic abilities of Vibrio spp. in water of Hatirjheel and the Buriganga River in the capital
of Bangladesh. A total of 6 Vibrio isolates could be identified from Hatirjheel which were all
confirmed using biochemical characterization. Water samples from the Buriganga river did not
yield any Vibrio. Among the isolates collected during the entire study period, 3 of the isolates
were found to be resistant to the antibiotic Ampicillin, 5 were resistant to Nalidixic Acid, 1 was
resistant to Erythromycin and all 6 were resistant to Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
However, all the isolates were susceptible to Impinem, Chloramphenicol, Amikacin,
Gentamycin, Ciprofloxacin, Doxycycline and Tetracycline. The overall Multiple Antibiotic
Resistance (MAR) index value varied from 0.02 and 0.04. Among the tested isolates, 2 of the
isolates were found to be non-haemolytic and the remaining 4 showed complete haemolysis.
These results are significant because of the role of these water bodies in the spread and
transmission of Vibrio infections. This study highlights the presence of potential microbial
hazard in the surface water bodies of Dhaka city.Raghib Mubassir QaziB. Biotechnolog
