Sustainable procurement through bidding process and effective negotiation
This dissertation is submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters in Procurement and Supply Management, 2018.Cataloged from PDF version of dissertation.Includes bibliographical references (page 45).Sustainable procurement practices integrate requirements, specifications and criteria that are
compatible and in favor of the protection of the environment, of social progress and in support of
economic development, namely by seeking resource efficiency, improving the quality of
products and services and ultimately optimizing costs.
Vital step in the development of sustainable procurement policies and plans is the establishment
of a cross departmental working group. This group will contribute to the developing and
implementing the sustainable procurement policy and action plan. The size of the group will
depend on human resource, structure, expert and resource available in the organization. The
group should include mix departmental expert who will ensure the plans for procuring the
product. If a large number of activities and analysis done by the mix departmental experts then
only the plan, strategy and implementation will be effective. Procurement expert, facility
managers, environment expert, legal expert, financial expert, IT expert, auditors, product
specification expert and other commercial officer will be included in the group.
Bidding document is required to be submitted to invite bid from the supplier. Bidding document
is the most important element for ensuring sustainable procurement as well as negotiation is a
very important part in procurement process. By this way buyer can reduce their overall
procurement cost.
Most of the organization of first world countries already ensured sustainable issues in bidding
document and effective negotiation but in our country, we cannot ensure sustainable issues. PPR
allows STD and negotiation. Moreover, most of the organizations have their own procurement
guidelines and their guidelines allow preparing bidding document and making negotiation. Why
we cannot ensure sustainable issues will be investigated in this study.
Mixed methods are deemed appropriate for the study. Both primary and secondary data have
been collected. Primary data have been collected from some government and non-government
organizations through questionnaire and secondary data have been collected through review of
website, books and case study. Since high level officials remain busy and they may not want to
disclose company’s information and operational level are not aware about the company’s
policies, mid-level officials have been chosen as respondents. A research questionnaire has been
prepared and sent to the officials of selected organization to get the information.
Most of the companies do not know about sustainable issues; therefore, expert on this area
should be hired or training secession may be arranged by hiring expert. As sustainable issues are
not included in the purchase policy therefore, sustainability criteria should be embedded in the
procurement policy for all organizations in Bangladesh. At the time inviting quotation/tender,
sustainability criteria should be included. Government should formulate rules and regulations
regarding sustainable issues that should be obeyed by all organizations in Bangladesh.
Finally, there is still huge scope to work on sustainable procurement. Most of the government
and non-government organizations in Bangladesh are not aware about sustainable procurement
where most of the first world countries have implemented the issues to create a better world.
More analysis is required to implement the issues in Bangladesh and how organization will be
benefited by sustainable procurement.Nilon TalukdarM. Procurement and Supply Managemen
BRAC Bank Limited: a brief work process of the employee banking department
This internship report is submitted in a partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration, 2018.Cataloged from PDF version of internship report.Includes bibliographical references (page 40).This report entails a brief understanding of the Employee Banking (EB) department of BRAC Bank Ltd (BBL) from an intern’s work experience. It consists of the core functions of the Employee Banking department and also highlights the functions of other departments who work closely with the Employee Banking (EB) department.
BRAC Bank Limited (BBL) is one the largest private commercial banks in Bangladesh. The vision, mission, objectives, achievements and basically the company overview are featured in this report. One of the integral performers of BBL in the market is its Retail Banking division. Retail Banking, also known as Consumer Banking is targeted towards individual clients through the local branches where the clients are offered multiple services and banking products i.e. accounts, loans, cards, mortgages, different deposit schemes etc. The Retail Banking division has several departments under its wing with Employee Banking (EB) being one of its major players. The Employee Banking (EB) department is very different in comparison to other sections of Retail Banking because instead of targeting single clients it attempts to target a wide array of employees working in an organization and cater to their needs. The basic function of EB is to open salary accounts for employees and disburse them as per the instruction of their employers. It also offers other banking products (loans, credit cards etc.) to the employees at discounted rates. Since the clients are targeted on a larger scale, the procedures involved are a little more complicated to have the clients on-board. The term “On-boarding” refers to the process through which a company signs an agreement to channel their payrolls through the salary accounts of BBL. The report mentions how the EB department has to work simultaneously with several other departments both within and outside of its division. The report also includes the different products & services that the EB department has to offer and how they are processed and communicated. The last part of this report highlights a few room for improvements of the Employee Banking department which would be beneficial for both the Retail Banking department and eventually BRAC Bank Limited (BBL) as a whole.Farhan KhanB. This thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, 2018.Catalogued from PDF version of thesis report.Includes bibliographical references (page 62-65)Lung cancer is the most common cancer among men and women of Bangladesh. People who smoke for more than 10 years, expose to dusty environment, affect by infectious disease like tuberculosis, pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are mostly affected by lung cancer. In Bangladesh lung cancer is an important health problem between the age of 50 and 70 with vital signs and symptoms. The present study aim is to provide awareness on the environmental risk factors related to smoking habit which causes lung cancer in Bangladesh. This study was carried out in the Department of Oncology at Ahsania Mission Cancer Hospital, Dhaka. This was a retrospective observational study.
This study was carried out during the period from November 2017 to May 2018 for 7 months of enrollment with a follow up of 3 months up to August 2018 which makes total study period of 10 months. Patients’ data were collected from the indoor and outdoor medical records of the AMCH hospital. A representative sample of 300 Bangladeshi cancer Patients aged over 30 was asked about their perception and the level of concern about various environmental lifestyle and genetic risk factor in relation to cancer prevention, as a part of a successful survey.
The patients suffering from adenocarcinoma (42%) is large in number and squamous cell carcinoma (30%) whereas small-cell carcinoma (15%) and carcinoid tumor (3%). Among 28 risk factors, the attributable fraction of lung cancer causing by tobacco smoking (67.3%) and environmental exposure were considered major risk factors. Some infectious diseases like Tuberculosis (39%) and Asthma (18%) were also considered as important risk factors. Patients more than 50 years of age were more likely to have lung cancer. For most risk factors, attributable fraction responses were higher in men (63%) than in women (37%). On the other hand, the attributable fractions of cancer by occupational exposure were considered low compared with other risk factors.
Our result suggests that awareness of the attributable fraction of lung cancer causes in the Bangladeshi cancer patients tends to be dominated by cancer causing infection, men and women hygiene tobacco smoking, chewing tobacco, occupational exposure and life style. In Bangladesh, it appears that most people are aware of the major risk factors of lung cancer. Hence there is need to promote awareness of lung cancer symptoms and develop and evaluate rapid assessment clinics for patients with suspected lung cancers.Musharrat ShabnamB. Microbiolog
Determination of prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility pattern of the bacterial isolates collected from different parts of restaurant refrigerators of Mohakhali, Dhaka, Bangladesh
This thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, 2018.Catalogued from PDF version of thesis report.Includes bibliographical references (page 55-57)Refrigeration is an essential food storage technique and an important link in wide chain of cross contamination which leads to the outbreak of many food borne disease. In this study samples were obtained from various parts (drawer, handle, egg tray, surface) of two restaurant’s refrigerators of Mohakhali, Dhaka, Bangladesh. A total of 41 isolates were collected from 8 different parts and identified through conventional biochemical tests according to Bergey’s Manual of Systematic Bacteriology. Antibiotic susceptibility pattern was determined by using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method for all the 41 isolates against nine commercial antibiotic discs [Ampicillin (10 μg), Ciprofloxacin (5 μg), Chloramphenicol (30 μg), Gentamycin (10 μg), Azithromycin (15μg), Penicillin-G (10 μg), Nalidixic acid (30 μg), Streptomycin (10μg), Tetracycline (30 μg)]. In result, Staphylococcus spp. showed the highest prevalence 11 (26.82%), followed by Salmonella spp. 7 (17.07%), Klebsiella spp. 7 (17.07%), Vibrio spp. 6 (14.63%), Bacillus spp. 4 (9.75%), Pseudomonas spp. 4 (9.75%) and E.coli 2 (4.87%) respectively. Among the 41 isolates, 43.90% were found resistant to more than two antibiotics and highest percentage of resistance was observed against ampicillin (73.17%). On the other hand only 2.43% isolates showed resistance against ciprofloxacin and gentamycin. Temperature tolerance of the organisms also determined by growing the isolates in different temperature like 45°C, 50°C and 55°C. Growth was observed for all organisms at 45°C but in 50°C, 29.26% isolates showed viable growth. In 55º C no growth was observed. These results indicate that the pathogenic bacteria can survive in refrigerator surfaces and can cause cross contamination. It is needed to maintain appropriate food storage and refrigerator management, and proper hand hygiene is recommended.Rokeya SultanaB. Microbiolog

Depiction of gender in ELT textbooks: gender stereotyping in language and its effect on secondary level students
This thesis is submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in English, 2018.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 53-58).The paper discussed gender stereotyping in ELT textbooks which can be constituted as one of the most significant issues for gender and language research. Through the study conducted for this paper, the portrayal of gender in secondary English texts, how it effects student’s perception of gender and the critical literacy practices required to provide an unbiased educational environment have been researched. The present study investigated gender representation through reading texts in English Language textbook series with the help of survey questionnaires prepared for both students and teachers. The survey showed that both students and teachers are aware of the gender discrepancies yet there have been no feasible changes in the curriculum to modify the gender stereotyping in ELT textbooks. Therefore, this study suggested that incorporating a critical literacy and feminist pedagogy into the classes could be a way to aid students in perceiving their gender perceptions. In other words, this study could be used in the future to highlight and balance the gender disparity to bring in the much needed change in the current educational curriculums in ELT by creating awareness among the educatorsAnika Tasnim HossainB.A. in Englis
