    Protection of grains and cereals

    No full text
The protection of stored grains against insectswas reviewed. The various sources of insect infestation of stored grains and the type of insects infesting grains were identified. It was observed that poor handling of the crop products during harvesting and processing prior to storage among others were identified as sources of insect infestation of stored grains and this result in poor quality and loss in market value of the grains. It was established that susceptibility of the grains to attack by insects was influenced by their moisture content. Hence, long – term storage, grains must be dried to safe moisture content. As preventive measures, good sanitation practice will help farmers reduce pest population. Grains can be sun dried when insect presence is noticed, during sunny weather. Mixing of local plants with grains for example dried neem leaves, dried pepper among others, the use of fumigants and the knowledge of the biology of the insect pests will help to reduce the menace of insects from our stored grains. In order to minimize the problems of insect pests on stored grains, harvesting methods be improved upon as to reduce grain losses due to injury which attract insects. Design of  warehouses should be done in such a way that  effective storage of grains will be achieved (good site location, proper ventilation etc), stored products chemicals manufacturing company be set up in Nigeria while research institutes and universities in the country be given sufficient fund to execute research programmes on effective crop storage

Human growth hormone is secreted in a pulsatile fashion, generally following a circadian rhythm. The growth hormone concentrations of 25 female students of Madonna University, Elele within ages groups 19-27years were determined before (Pre) and after (Post) exercise. Growth hormone levels were assayed using the commercially available Human Growth Hormone quantitative test kit whose principle is based on a solid phase enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The data generated was calculated statistically using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 17. The result showed significant difference in 5.45 + 0.97 ng/ml  in pre exercise and 13.89 + 1.77 ng/ml in post exercise (P<0.05). There was no significant increase in growth hormone pre and Post exercise at different age groups 19-21years (13.91± 9.51 ng/ml and 14.78 ± 3.09 ng/ml), 22-24 (6.73 ±1.73 ng/ml and 11.73 ± 1.97ng/ml) and 25-27(4.77 ± 2.10ng/ml and 19.61 ± 7.54ng/ml).The study has shown that exercise can affect concentration of growth hormone in females

Objective: This experimental study examined the effect of erythropoietin (Epo) in rat model and particularly in an ischemia-reperfusion (IR) protocol. The effect of that molecule was studied biochemically using blood mean creatine kinase MB (CK-MB) levels.Materials and methods: 40 rats of mean weight 247.7 g were used in the study. CK-MB levels were measured at 60 min (groups A and C) and at 120 min (groups B and D) of reperfusion. Erythropoietin was administered only in groups C and D.Results: Erythropoietin administration kept non significantly increased the predicted CK-MB values by 4.28%+5.11% (P= 0.3721). Reperfusion time non significantly decreased the predicted CK-MB values by the same quantities 4.28%+5.11% (P= 0.3721). Interaction of erythropoietin administration and reperfusion time kept non significantly increased the predicted CK-MB values by 2.32%+3.09% (P= 0.4430).Conclusions: Erythropoietin administration whether it interacted or not with reperfusion time kept short-term non significantly increased the predicted CK-MB values

This paper presents the bipolar- Radon transform (BRT)that map a function into its integrals over two types of circles. By using the bipolar coordinates, this transform reduces to the normal Radon transform Radon transform(RT). (BRT)can be applied for tomography .A direct example and the inversion are presented

Digital Era of Orthodontics: A Review

Orthodontic treatment is a complex dental treatment which sometimes requires an interdisciplinary team where different specialists of dental medicine have to manage a vast quantity of data especially in adult orthodontics. In such complicated cases, good diagnostic tools and easy communication are essential. Computer science has an increasing impact in almost every aspect of the orthodontic practice. This review will discuss into the said aspects in the practice of orthodontics as well as evaluate the applications of computer technology in orthodontics like digital photographs, cone beam computed tomography, virtual study models, communication, three-dimensional craniofacial imaging, virtual reality softwares for prediction and treatment planning, video imaging, manufacture of orthodontic appliance, web-based digital orthodontic records and network-attached storage devices

Conjugacy and Compatibility of Partial Arrays

Berstel and Boason introduced the partial words in the context of gene (or protein) comparision (1). To develop an overall picture of how genes are regulated during hyphal development the partial DNA arrays are used to study the difference in gene expression between wild type and the signalling mutants. Also Aldo de Luca developed a combinatorial method for the analysis of finite words for the study of biological molecules. This paper studies a relaxation of compatibility relation called K-compatibility  and conjugacy of K- compatibility between partial arrays.Â

Motion Of An Electron Due To Electric Conduction In Presence Of Constant Magnetic Field And Alternative Electric Field At Right Angles And Closed Form Solutions

Electric current in a conductor means motion of electrons in the opposite directions. In this Paper is presented motion of an electron under the influence of a constant magnetic field and an oscillatory electric field perpendicular to each other. The differential equations of its motion are formed and are solved to determine some physical parameters

PRELIMINARY CLINICAL OBSERVATIONS FOLLOWING INTRAVEINOUS BLOOD TRANSFUSION IN LOCAL DOMESTIC MONGREL CAT’S IN SOKOTO, NIGERIA

In this study an attempt was made to look into intravenous blood transfusion. In this part of the country it is rarely performed, neither in the few veterinary teaching hospitals, nor in our local veterinary clinics. However, several clinical cases are regularly lost due to problems of anaemia, and several other situations of blood insufficiencies. Eighteen (18) adult stray cats were used. Six as donors, six as recipients, and six as control receiving normal saline. Blood was collected from the jugular vein of cats under sedation, and transferred to sedated recipients. Vital parameters (temperature, pulse, heart beat rate and respiratory rate.), packed cell volume (PCV) and clinical reactions to the infusions were observed. The PCV of the recipients increased between 5-10% while the temperature was seen to be increasing as the transfusion was taking place. There was an average increase of 6-10c. In the body temperature .clinical signs observed during the initial blood transfusion includes, salivation, urination, muscular tremors, vomiting, lacrimation, and bloat. While the signs were more severe after the repeat transfusion two weeks afterwards, indicating serious transfusion reactions such as severe salivation, urination, muscular tremors, vomiting, lacrimation, mydriasis, lethargy, convulsions, facial oedema, opisthotonus and death. These experiments showed that blood transfusion in the local mongrel cats in northwest Nigeria can be performed to save the live of a cat with problems of blood insufficiency. However, with some adverse reactions, a repeat blood transfusion is not recommended because it can come with attendant severe transfusion reactions, including death. The findings were discussed in the paper
