Oral Probiotics on the Horizon: A Review
For the past few decades, bacteria known as probiotics have been added to food because of their beneficial effects on human health. Probiotics are a part of our daily food consumed as fermented foods with specially added active live cultures; such as in yogurt or as dietary supplements. Probiotics act by competing with pathogenic microorganisms for adhesion sites, antagonising these pathogens or by modulating the host’s immune response. The potential application of probiotics for oral health has gradually garnered the attention of several teams of researchers. Although only a few clinical studies have been conducted so far, the results to date suggest that probiotics could be useful in the prevention and treatment of oral infections, including dental caries, periodontal disease and halitosis. This article briefly summarises the currently available data on the potential benefits of probiotics for oral health
Prevalence of Oral Leukoplakia among Small Scale Factory Workers of Panchkula District, Haryana, India: A Descriptive Study
INTRODUCTION: Leukoplakia is described as a non scrappable whitish lesion and finds its prevalence high in the south Asian continent.AIM: To assess the prevalence of leukoplakia among small scale factory workers of district Panchkula, Haryana, IndiaMATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried among 522 small scale factory workers in district Panchkula, Haryana, India. The diagnosis of presence of oral leukoplakia was evaluated and documented by the two examiners, using ADA type III examination and using the WHO standard recording form for oral mucosal diseases with clinical diagnosis based on the criteria as provided by the WHO and modified by Axell. Descriptive statistics were applied to describe the results.RESULTS: The study subjects had male predominance(73.9%). The mean age was reported as 56±5.2, and the prevalence of oral leukoplakia was seen among 7.1% (37) of the total population. Of the 37 people diagnosed, homogeneous leukoplakia was seen in 22 (59.5%)workers, while non-homogeneous leukoplakia was seen among 15 (40.5%) workers with buccal mucosa (18, 48.7%) as the most frequent site for occurrence of leukoplakia.CONCLUSION: Public health education programs are advised among the small scale workers of Panchkula district so as to prevent the high occurrence of leukoplakia and other tobacco related lesions among them
Awareness of COPD in a High Risk Indian Population: A Cross Sectional Study
INTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has a major impact on the health of an Individual and is a burden to the society.AIM: To assess the attitudes towards COPD among smokers who are at a high risk of developing the disease in Ranga Reddy District, Telangana, IndiaMATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional survey conducted among five dental camps conducted in district of Ranga Reddy in current smokers (both bidi and cigarette) aged 45 years and older with a history of at least 10 pack(for cigarette)/bundle(for bidi)-years of smoking. The subjects were distributed over four age groups, which were 45‒49 years, 50‒59 years, 60‒69 years, and >70 Years. Data was collected through a pre-validated, close ended structured questionnaire divided into four parts regarding the participant’s demographics, current health status, symptoms, awareness of COPD, attitudes towards COPD and willingness to quit smoking. Data was analysed using SPSS version 21.0.RESULTS: Of a total of 426 subjects, (male predominance 94.2%.) , people belonging to the age groups of 40-49 years and >70 years reported themselves being in “Good health”. Only 3.5% reported having to know COPD as a respiratory disease as compared to 24.9% of the population who recognised lung cancer as the most common respiratory disease. 46.2% subjects acknowledged that cough was a symptom most commonly associated with COPD. Only a few portion of the subjects (1.8%) were willing to visit a doctor for diagnosis of COPD. Willingness to quit smoking among the respondents was seen in only 24.7% of the population and 14.5% could not decide about the same.CONCLUSION: Efforts are needed to be directed towards proper counselling and education of the people of Ranga Reddy district to prevent them from the ill-effects of Tobacco and its related diseases, especially COPD
Temporary Anchorage Devices: A Review
The need for skeletal anchorage in orthodontics has increased with the growing number of adult patients seeking orthodontic treatment. In addition, complex treatment goals, patients with missing teeth, non-compliance with extra-oral anchorage have all added to the growing need for skeletal anchorage. The success of implants being used as anchors has widened the horizons of the orthodontist and are welcome additions to the armamentarium of a clinical orthodontist, which should be explored to the best possible advantage for treating patients
Rotary Instrumentation in Primary Teeth: A Review
Pediatric Endodontics has evolved a great deal in the past few decades. There are advancements in the techniques and materials used for pulpectomy therapy in primary teeth. Rotary instrumentation has been very popular and routinely technique in permanent teeth. Despite this, the manual technique is a preferred method in primary teeth. In-vitro or cross-sectional studies have revealed rotary instrumentation to be more advantageous than manual in terms of procedural time, cleaning efficiency and quality of root filling. Though instrument fracture is a potential concern with rotary files there are not enough evidence to contraindicate its use in primary teeth. This paper has briefly reviewed the literature related to the use of rotary instrumentation in primary teeth and discussed the necessity to carry out long-term clinical trials to adopt the technique in routine or contraindicate its use in primary teeth
Post-Operative Endodontic Pain(PEP) among Patients Visiting a Dental College in Birgunj, Nepal: A Cross-Sectional Study
NTRODUCTION: Post-operative Endodontic Pain (PEP) following a Root Canal Treatment(RCT) can cause discomfort to the patient as well as increase the working time of the dental clinician.AIM: To evaluate prevalence of PEP among patients visiting the department of Endodontics, MB Kedia Dental College, Birgunj,NepalMATERIALS AND METHOD: This cross-sectional used a 16 item questionnaire based of VAS Scale to report pre-poerative pain and PEP among patients undergoing RCT in the department of Endodontics, MB Kedia Dental College, Birgunj, Nepal. Patients were followed-up for six months for any signs of PEP.
