Exploring Astronautical Dentistry: A Review
The Human body reacts differently in different environment(s). With development in the field of astronomy, long distance trip to another planet is now possible. These trips require humans to stay in zero gravity conditions for a long time. Simulated microgravity is the best way to assess the physiologic changes in near zero gravity conditions, as it is not always possible to conduct scientific experiments in space. The purpose of this review is to determine the effects of zero gravity on oral cavity
Odontogenic Submandibular Space Infection Complicated By Temporal Space Abscess: Report Of A Rare Case
Cases of facial space infection of odontogenic origin are commonly reported in dentistry. Among them submandibular space infections are most common, but their extension to temporal region is seldom reported. Management of such infection is very challenging and requires expertise. This report describes the management of a rare case of a submandibular space infection extending to temporal space using incision and drainage in an eight years old male child
Dental Management towards Sickle Patients: A Literature Review
Sickle cell disease is an autosomal dominant haemoglobinopathy in which an abnormal form of hemoglobin (hemoglobin S) polymerizes under low oxygen saturation and alters normal spherical shaped RBCs into sickle shape. In India, sickle cell disease is prevalent in central and southern states like Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. In various districts like Korba, Kanker, Rajnandgaon, Durg, Bilaspur, Raipur, Dantewada, Bastar, Mahasumund, Dhamtari, Kawardha and Jangjir-Champa of Chhattisgarh, frequency of sickle cell disease are approximately 10%. Screening results suggest that the prevalence of homozygous sickle cell disease was 2.1% and that of heterozygous sickle cell disease was 10% among different tribes. Prevalence rate among schedule tribe was 43.0%, schedule caste was 18.26% and 35.3% among OBC group with the majority of cases reported in Agharia, Kurmi, Teli and Panika castes. Common oral findings of dental hypoplasia, delayed eruption, mucosal pallor, and radiographic changes are noticed in this disease. This paper aims to describe etiology, prevelance of sickle cell disease in chhattisgarh region and the role of dental surgeon for the management of such patients
Understanding Primitive Reflexes and Their Role In Growth And Development: A Review
Reflexes are set motor responses to specific sensory stimuli. In newborns and young infants these primitive reflexes are an important assessment tool. Children with a distinctive reflex are difficult to treat. This includes a large category in which primitive reflexes are retained longer than necessary. Certain reflexes may not appear at appropriate age of development. Many neurological conditions are characterized by aberrations in reflex actions. However, there is scarcity of data for high-risk infants pertaining to this topic. Dental treatment becomes challenging in these individuals and sometimes due to lack of compliance even necessary emergency dental treatment is difficult to carry out

Presence of Multiple Impacted Premolars in a Patient Visiting a Satellite Setting in Panchkula: A Case Report
In comparison to normal dentition, extra teeth present in the oral cavity are called as Supernumerary teeth with prevalence varying between 0.1% and 3.6%. It is more common in permanent dentition and incidence rate is high in maxillary incisor region, followed by maxillary third molar and mandibular molar, premolar, canine, and lateral incisor. Supernumerary premolars may occur in single or multiple numbers and their prevalence rate is 0.08-0.3%. Huge percentage of supernumerary premolars remain unerupted, impacted and usually asymptomatic. Radiograph plays an important role in their diagnosis. The present paper reports a case of impacted fully completely developed supernumerary premolar teeth along with upper and lower molars
OSMF and its Prevalence Amongst Rural Shop Owners in Panchkula District, Haryana, India: A Descriptive Study
INTRODUCTION: Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF), is a condition that is mostly associated with tobacco and areca nut chewing and find it prevalence to be higher in rural populations.AIM: To assess the prevalence of OSMF among rural shop owners in Panchkula district, Haryana, India.METHODOLOGY: A total of 321 shop owners in rural Panchkula were interviewed and examined for OSMF and associated lesions with the help of a preformed, pre-tested questionnaire. The population was divided into six stratas according to age(15- 24 years, 25- 34 years, 35- 44 years, 45-60 years and >60 years). Data was entered into Microsoft excel, Descriptive statistics were applied and statistics was done using SPSS 21.0.RESULT: Tobacco consumption in any form was seen in 197 (61.4%) shopkeepers, with OSMF being diagnosed in 49 (15.3%) of them comprising of 42 males and 7 females. The majority of subjects having OSMF (17, 34.7%) were seen in the age group of 45-54 years.CONCLUSION: It is highly advised that health education regarding tobacco consumption and its ill-effects be provided to rural population in Panchkula district
Trigeminal Neuralgia: A Review
Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is a well-recognized syndrome characterized by lancinating attacks of severe facial pain. The diagnosis of TN is based on a history of characteristic pain attacks that are consistent with specific widely accepted criteria for the diagnosis. TN pain attacks may result from physiologic changes induced by a chronic partial injury to the brainstem trigeminal nerve root from a variety of causes. An early and accurate diagnosis of TN is important, because therapeutic interventions can reduce or eliminate pain attacks in the large majority of TN patients
Missed Canals: The Usual Suspect of Endodontic Failure
Anomalous root and root canal morphology has been found to be associated with any tooth with varying degree and incidence. Especially in case of mandibular anteriors, incidence of two root canals in have been reported to be as low as 0.1% to as high as 62.5%. Knowledge of the root canal anatomy is the basic pre requisite for successful completion and outcome of endodontic treatment. Missed canals harbor bacteria which lead to treatment failure. This paper reports the case of a patient with mandibular lateral incisor and canines with two roots and two root canals
Sex Determination by Evaluating Inter-Canine Distance and Mesio-Distal Width of Mandibular Canine
INTRODUCTION: Establishing one’s identity is necessary for legal as well as humanitarian purpose. Sex determining is considered to be one of the major factors employed to assist for the identification of a person. Individual identification heavily relies on the quality of the dental records in the office.AIM: The purpose of this study was to assess the usefulness of the Mandibular Canine Index(MCI) as an aid in sexual dimorphism in Kanpur population using mesiodistal with intercanine distance of mandibular canines.MATERIALS AND METHOD: This was an experimental study involving the preparation of plaster casts of 200 males and females each residing in Kanpur, UP, India. Both the genders were in the age group of 17-30 years. The casts for study were prepared and measurements of mandibular canine along with intercanine distance were taken. The MCI calculations were done using standard equations. Statistical analysis used students’t-test. All values were considered statistically significant for value of p<0.05.RESULTS: The present study demonstrated that left MCI predictability for males is more whereas in case of females, right MCI predictability is more, with no significant variation in the intercanine distance.CONCLUSION: It was found out that mandibular canines exhibit maximum sexual dimorphism, hence, they can be considered as the key teeth for one’s identification
