Significance of Correct Diagnosis of Odontogenic Extraoral Sinus: A Report Of Two Cases

    Get PDF
Cutaneous draining sinus tracts of odontogenic origin often are a diagnostic challenge. A delay in correctly diagnosing these types of lesions can result in unnecessary antibiotic therapy and surgical treatment. This case report presents the clinical course of two cases with extra-oral sinus tract formation, from diagnosis and treatment to short-term follow-up and evaluation. These facial lesions were initially misdiagnosed as lesions of non-odontogenic origin. Later on an odontogenic cause was identified and endodontic intervention resulted in resolution of the problem, confirming the initial misdiagnosis

    Dental Tourism: A Review

    Get PDF
Dental tourism, popularly known as dental holidays is a part of medical tourism and involves those individuals who seek dental care outside their local healthcare systems while vacationing. As the dental tourism is growing worldwide, India has also become a tourist spot for dental patients because of its cost effective and excellent treatment procedures. But there are still many issues faced by the people in order to reap benefits from this sector. The government plays a crucial in eradicating the complexities associated with the process for example simplifying the process of medical visa and instituting visa-on-arrival for patient’s so as to further the promotion of the dental services to the visitors

During endodontic diagnosis multirooted teeth morphologically, shows variable root canal system . This case report explains the anatomical variations of root and root canals. Here it is shown that a single canal is present in mandibular second molar. Therefore we should be aware that a single canal can also be present in mandibular molar

Radiographic Assessment of Impacted Canine: A Systematic Review

Dental professionals face a lot of challenges in treatment of impacted canine due its position. Localisation of impacted canine in diagnosis and treatment is important. There are various radiographic methods in localization of impacted canine. In this article, different radiographic methods in the diagnosis of impacted canine. The use of periapical radiograph, panoramic radiograph, occlusal radiograph, CT scan, and CBCT have been reviewed using various literature. CBCT gives an accurate dimension and position of impacted canine

Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP): A Case Report

    Get PDF
Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an anomalous decrease in the number of platelets with obscure etiologic causes. Clinical signs primarily include muco-cutaneous i.e. Petechia, purpura, ecchymosis. The most important aspects of management in this disease, is to anticipate, and control bleeding hence preventing any life threatening consequences. Transfusion of platelets, steroid therapy, Anti-D immunoglobulin are the main stay of treatment. Thrombopoietin receptor agonists and splenectomy may be necessary in some severe cases. We report a case of a young girl with ITP, identified at our unit. She was admitted to the hospital for observation and was successfully treated with steroids therapy

Comparative Evaluation Of Antibacterial And Layer Removal Efficacy Of Two Different Herbal Irrigants – An In Vitro Study

    No full text
INTRODUCTION: Irrigation during root canal therapy is especially needed for teeth with complex internal anatomy. Biomechanical preparation of root canal produces "smear layer" which gets embedded with debris and microorganisms. The major side effects of these widely used chemical irrigants such as Sodium hypochlorite for antibacterial efficacy and EDTA for smear layer removal has led to the search of a more biocompatible irrigant.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Azadirachta indica(neem) and Ocimum sanctum(tulsi) extract were used in this study as herbal irrigants to evaluate the above mentioned properties by the q PCR method and SEM analysis.RESULTS: In antimicrobial efficacy, the Mean value of NaOcl showed higher antimicrobial efficacy followed by Neem leaf extract and the lower antimicrobial efficacy was recorded with Tulsi extract. Similarly, the mean smear layer removal by different irrigants at different root levels, EDTA showed the maximum smear layer removal, followed by Neem leaf extract and Tulsi extract showed the least smear layer removal. Hence Tulsi has poor smear layer removal efficacy and comparable antimicrobial efficacy when compared with Neem extractSTATISTICAL ANALYSIS: The collected data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance to compare the mean of the groups. The post- hoc test (Tukey) was performed to find the interrelationship between different groups for significant difference (P < 0.05; confidence interval 95%).CONCLUSION: From this study, these two herbal irrigants are proved to be safe and effective. It can be concluded that neem leaf extract has a significant antimicrobial efficacy against E. faecalis and significant smear layer removal efficacy compared to 17% EDTA

Oral health is an important aspect of general well being and in the elderly population compromised oral care has been considered a major risk factor for various health problems. Hence oral-systemic diseases linkage is a special health concern for this elderly population and high quality of oral health care should be available to all regardless of age or circumstances

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries, is a global health burden which hampers the holistic health of an individual and leads to complications later in life.AIM: To assess the dental caries status of children in slum-dwelling areas of Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, India.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional, descriptive approach was conducted among 400 slum dwelling children aged 12-15 years using DMFT index, sterile instruments and ADA type III examinations. Descriptive statistics were applied using Microsoft excel. Data was then transferred into SPSS version 21.0 and the t-test (paired), Spearman’s correlation and Odd’s Ratio were applied to find significant associations, if any.RESULTS: The prevalence of dental caries was found to be 69.0%. Mean decay values were 3.02±1.22, whereas the mean DMFT was 1.77±1.2. A significant difference was seen between caries free and children affected with caries (p=04*, r=0.78). It was also observed that males were 2.1 times more prone to have a higher DMFT as compared to females.CONCLUSION: It is recommended that further studies be carried out among slum dwelling children of Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, India and specific dental education be imparted to them to improve their oral health

To Assess the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Oral Hygiene Protocols Among Patients Having Orthodontic Treatment

    Get PDF
INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic treatment is widely acknowledged and accepted in everyday dental practice due to the positive effects it has on the dentofacial complex. Importance of oral hygiene in orthodontic patients is also important to prevent any further oral diseases.AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of oral hygiene protocols among patients having orthodontic treatment.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 90 patients who had permanent dentition from the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and various questions were asked regarding the knowledge, attitude and practice on oral hygiene during the time of orthodontic treatment. All the responses were analysed statistically.RESULTS: The results of the study showed that nearly 40% of the patients were unaware about gingival health, 65% did not follow the oral hygiene instruction. Despite being given instructions, most of them were reluctant in practicing them strictly.CONCLUSION: The knowledge, attitude, practice of oral hygiene among orthodontic patients were poor and showed the need of better education and motivation. Many factors may be responsible for the non-maintenance of gingival health practices. There is a need to incorporate and evaluate more intense oral hygiene programs in the future
