    Interprocessus distances based on gender using panoramic radiographs

    Objectives: This research is aimed to find out the differences of interprocessus distances between males and females using panoramic radiographs. Materials and Methods: This research is using observational analytic with cross sectional study design. Secondary data was taken from 96 panoramic radiographs consisting of 48 males and 48 females, from RSKGM-P Universitas Airlangga. Measurements were carried out using ImageJ Software by 3 observers. The measurement results were then analyzed by independent t-test and the inter-measuring reliability was tested using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) on IBM SPSS software. Results: The result showed that the significance value (2-tailed) of interprocessus distances measurement on males and females was <0.05 in both regions. Reliability test of inter-observer using ICC obtained the overall measurement results was more than 0.75 which means excellent reliability. Conclusion: There was a significant difference between the interprocessus distances on males and females as measured by panoramic radiographs

    Dilacerated distolingual root of mandibular first molar mimicking cementoblastoma: case report by radiographic findings

    Objectives: This case report aimed to report an extra root number of mandibular first molars that are mimicking benign cementoblastoma in the periapical radiograph and clarified using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) examination. Case Report: A 22-year-old female patient was referred from private clinic to Radiology Department of Universitas Padjadjaran Dental Hospital for a CBCT examination of the left mandibular first molar with benign cementoblastoma as the provisional diagnosis.     Assessment of parasymphysis and ramus fractures in pediatric patients using panoramic radiographs and CBCT: a case report

    Objectives: This case report aims to identify fractures that occur through panoramic radiographs and evaluated by CBCT after being given treatment. Case Report: A 12-year-old male patient came with his older brother to the emergency room (ER) RSKGM/Bandung Dental Hospital due to the trauma of a fall by an iron football goalpost while playing soccer which caused the patient to fall onto the grass field. The patient was experiencing continuous bleeding. Systemic and allergic history was denied. Extraoral examination showed bruising with no facial asymmetry. Intraoral examination revealed a vertical gap between teeth 42 and 43, the jaw within the site was mobile, and active bleeding especially from lingual lacerations.  After consulting with Dental Surgery Specialist, the emergency room doctor gave interdental wiring. After 2 months post wiring, a CBCT photo evaluation was carried out. Conclusion: The mandibular fracture in this case report was well identified by clinical examination and supported by panoramic radiography. After that the patient was given treatment and evaluated through CBCT. CBCT provides a clearer and better picture

    Artificial intelligence based on Convolutional Neural Network for detecting dental caries on bitewing and periapical radiographs

    Objectives: This narrative review is written to describe the accuracy of caries detection and find out the clinical implications and future prospects of using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to determine radio-diagnosis of dental caries in bitewing and periapical radiographs. Review: The databases used for literature searching in this narrative review were PubMed, Google Scholar, and Science Direct. The inclusion criteria were original article, case report, and textbook written in English and Bahasa Indonesia, published within 2011-2021. The exclusion criteria were articles that the full text could not be accessed, research article that did not provide the methods used, and duplication articles. In this narrative review, a total of 33 literatures consisting of 30 articles and three textbooks reviewed, including four original articles on CNN for caries detection. Conclusion: Results of the review reveal that GoogLeNet produces the best detection compared to Fully Convolutional Network (FCN) and U-Net for caries detection in bitewing and periapical radiographs. Nonetheless, the positive predictive value (PPV), recall, negative predictive value (NPV), specificity, F1-score, and accuracy values in these architectures indicate good performance. The differences of each CNN’s performances to detect caries are determined by the number of trained datasets, the architecture’s layers, and the complexity of the CNN architectures. The conclusion of this review is CNN can be used as an alternative to detect caries, increasing the diagnostic accuracy and time efficiency as well as preventing errors due to dentist fatigue. Yet the CNN is not able to substitute the expertise of a radiologist. Therefore, it is need to be revalidated by the radiologist to avoid diagnostic errors

    Analysis of the panoramic radiographic density of the mandibular bone in the elderly due to increased cortisol levels

    Objectives: Mandibular bone is generally formed by intramembranous ossification. Bone density mandible can be assessed from the trabecular pattern. In the elderly, the hormone cortisol affects bone formation through bone resorption by blocking calcium.  The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation of cortisol levels to mandibular bone density in elderly women and men. Materials and Methods: This study was an analytic survey, where the population was determined from secondary patient data in the form of 31 panoramic radiographs and 31 laboratory results of cortisol examination, the research sample was divided into two groups. The bone density of the mandible was assessed from the trabeculae of the neck condyles region of the right and left. Density assessment using the ImageJ software program on panoramic radiographs was an examination that is often done in dentistry. Results: This study showed that the lowest density was in the group of women over 60 years. The results of the t-test with the independent sample obtained a p-value of > 0.05, which indicated there is no significant difference. The negative correlation value indicated that the relationship that occurs is opposite, p-value <0.05 which indicated the lower bone density, the higher cortisol level. Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, there was a correlation that with the increasing age of both women and men there was an increase in cortisol levels and a decrease in mandibular density

    Risk detection of osteoporosis with panoramic radiograph using mental index in 30-60 years old patients (an overview in Ulin Hospital Banjarmasin)

    Objectives: This research is aimed to determine the detection of osteoporosis risk with a panoramic radiograph using mental index in 30-60 years old patients in Ulin Hospital Banjarmasin. Materials and Methods: This research is using descriptive study with a cross-sectional study design. This research sample using secondary data from 30-60 years old patients who took panoramic radiographs in Radiology Installation of Ulin Hospital Banjarmasin from January 2018 – December 2021. Results: The result showed that the age group at risk of osteoporosis was the age group 56-60 years old (right jaw 3.44 ± 0.70 and left jaw 3.33 ± 0.32), gender at risk of osteoporosis is men (right jaw 3.44 ± 0.52 and left jaw 3.37 ± 0.44) and the mean value of the mandibular cortex width in the group at risk for osteoporosis was 2.91 ± 0.21. Conclusion: The age group at risk of osteoporosis is the age of 56-60 years old and the gender at risk of osteoporosis is men. Mental index can be used as a tool for measuring the mandibular cortex width on panoramic radiographs to diagnose the risk of osteoporosis

    Bilateral radicular cyst mimicking dentigerous cyst: a case report

    Objectives: The aim of this case report is to describe radiographically the specific features of periapical cysts to differentiate them from dentigerous cyst lesions despite their similar clinical appearance. Case Report: A 21-year-old female patient came to Dental Hospital in Bandung with a referral for a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)  examination with a clinical diagnosis of suspected right mandibular dentigerous cyst and left mandibular periapical cyst. The patient said that during the past month, swelling had appeared on both sides of the jaw, which was getting bigger, the pain was intermittent, and it was disturbing when eating. Intraoral examination showed gingival enlargement, muccobucal fold disappeared. Extraoral examination, facial asymmetry was found due to unilateral swelling.  Radiographic examinations showed both lesions were oval, unilocular, radiolucent internal structures with an average density of 4.7-32 HU resembling soft tissue density, corticated or radiopaque borders, caused expansion of the mandibular corpus buccally and lingually and to mesial and distal, cortical thinning and displacement of the inferior mandibular canal. Conclusion: Lesions on the jaws have almost the same clinical appearance, but through CBCT examination the type of lesion can be well determined. Periapical cyst lesion with large size has a clinical appearance like dentigerous lesions, but radiographically will show a different specific picture.&nbsp

    Intra- and Extraoral Signs of Probable Bruxism (Scoping Review)

      Bruxism is a repetitive masticatory muscle activity that has received attention in dental literature for its association with dental restoration failures, orofacial pain, neurological disease, and obstructive sleep apnea. As a determining factor in the diagnosis, parameters regarding the type and classification of intraoral and extraoral signs of probable bruxism are needed. This study aimed to identify the intraoral and extraoral signs of bruxism in the literature. A literature search was performed in the National Library of Medicine (PubMed) to identify all the articles published assessing intra and extraoral signs of bruxism. The selected articles were then screened and structurally read by three persons and summarized in PICO tables. Out of 551 initially retrieved references, 39 articles met the inclusion criteria and were thus included in the scoping review. The studies were divided into six categories based on the type of oral signs: buccal mucosa ridge (n=4), masseter hypertrophy (n=3), tongue indentation (n=4), tooth fracture (n=5), torus mandibularis (n=3), and tooth wear (n=20). This study concluded that the available studies utilize various methods in subjective and clinical data collection. Buccal mucosa ridge, tongue indentation, and torus mandibularis were common in subjects with bruxism. The association of masseter hypertrophy and tooth fracture with bruxism is not conclusive. Although studies on tooth wear in bruxism subjects are the most prevalent among other oral signs, no study has been able to establish a direct link between bruxism and tooth wear. &nbsp
