    Case Studies of Young People’s Health-Related Uses of Social Media - "Relatable"

    These case studies demonstrate the varying ways young people use social media and the impacts of this behaviour on their health and wellbeing. The case studies are based on evidence generated with 1296 young people who worked with us to communicate their experiences of social media.     In-situ Synchrotron X‑ray Characterisation of Corrosion Products in Zr Artificial Pits in Simulated Physiological Solutions

    Corrosion products generated in Zirconium artificial pits were characterised in‑situ by synchrotron X‑ray diffraction and XANES (X‑ray absorption near edge structure) in physiological saline, with and without addition of 4% albumin and/or 0.1% H2O2. Zr metal fragments and tetragonal ZrO2 particles were detected in aggregated black corrosion products away from the corrosion front. At the corrosion front, a ZrOCl2  8H2O salt layer of a few hundreds of microns thickness was formed. Coarsened ZrOCl2  8H2O crystallites were found further out into the solution. The Zr solution species were confirmed to be in a tetravalent state by XANES. TEM imaging of the corrosion products revealed heterogeneity of the morphology of the Zr metal fragments and confirmed their size to be less than a few microns. The formation and speciation of Zr corrosion products were found not affected by the presence of H2O2 and/or albumin in physiological saline. Furthermore, bulk Zr electrochemistry identified that the presence of H2O2 and/or albumin did not affect passive current densities and pitting potentials of the bulk Zr surface. Therefore, it is concluded that the pitting susceptibility and pit chemistry of Zr in physiological saline were unaffected by the presence of H2O2, albumin or their combinations

    Fibre-feed tests at Izana in 2017 May

    A new fibre-based spectrometer was commissioned from 2017 May 8 to May 26. The system was initially commissioned using the light feed from the secondary cœlostat on the lower-level platform in the main observing room of the solar pyramid building. Limited operational time was achieved in this phase due to bad weather. At the end of the site visit the whole system was moved into the apex of the pyramid sharing light from the primary cœlostat with the Mark-I spectrometer, and remains running in this configuration. Data from the spectrometer suffers from poor low- and high-frequency noise that are thought to be caused by the size of the solar image formed on the end of the fibre. The guiding performance of the Skywatcher mount was tested when operating via a Raspberry Pi single-board computer, and results are consistent with earlier tests at Mount Wilson. No issues are expected with the use of the low-power system

    Quiet eye and eye quietness: Electrooculographic methods to study ocular activity during motor skills

    Camera-based eye tracking research has revealed that experts make longer fixations on the target of an action (e.g., the ball in golf putting) prior to and following movement onset, compared to novices. Yet it is not clear how ocular activity affects motor performance. It is possible that the limited temporal resolution of camera systems has held back progress on this issue. We analysed horizontal EOG (512 Hz, 0.1-30 Hz filtered) from ten expert and ten novice golfers as they putted 60 balls to a 2.4 m distant hole. We used multiple voltage thresholds to measure the duration of the final fixation (quiet eye; QE) with its pre- and post-movement onset components. We also measured ocular activity across time as the standard deviation of the EOG in 0.5 s bins, –4 to +2 s from movement onset (eye quietness; EQ): lower values correspond with greater quietness. Finally, we measured ball address and club swing durations using infrared and sound sensors. Total QE duration did not differ between groups. However, experts had shorter pre-movement QE and longer post-movement QE than novices. Experts had less EQ before movement onset and greater EQ after movement onset. EQ was inversely correlated with QE duration, concurrently validating EQ as an index of ocular activity. Experts had longer swing durations than novices. Swing duration correlated positively with post-movement QE and negatively with post-movement EQ. Our findings provide new evidence that expert-novice differences in ocular activity may reflect differences in the kinematics of how experts and novices execute motor skills

    Mediating Escape: Caribbean Conversations on In/Security, Tourism and Mobility

    The Caribbean has figured prominently in narratives of security, mobility and transnational connections. Referred to as the 'Third Border' in US foreign policies, and inhabiting contradictory geopolitical spaces between North and South America, the region also negotiates narratives of inbetweenness and in/security in relation to more 'leisurely' pursuits, notably tourism. In this working paper, I begin an exploration of the ways in which representations of in/security and mobililty have framed media images of Caribbean tourism by revisiting the critically acclaimed documentary film, Life and Debt (2001). While geopolitics and tourism studies have largely tended to remain distinct areas of research, this particular film—and the conversations within and around it--illustrate the usefulness and urgent need to exhume the interdependency of both. I argue that media representations, Caribbean literature and policy decision-making are part of ongoing conversations that illustrate the limitations of over-generalised notions of time, security and space. Drawing on Benítez-Rojo’s (1992) concept of ‘repeating islands,’ I discuss the ways in which re-examining representations of mobility as part of a series of interconnected and multi-layered conversations, opens up new possibilities for interrogating the ways in which tourism narratives have reinforced, recreated, and stifled opportunities for diverse, secure and inclusive social spaces

    In situ catalytic upgrading of heavy oil using a pelletized Ni-Mo/Al2O3 catalyst in the THAI process

    Heavy oil and bitumen are difficult crudes to extract and upgrade, with additional transport and refining costs, because of their viscosity, low API gravity, high asphaltenes, metals (V, Ni), and heteroatoms (N, S). Combining Toe-to-Heel Air Injection (THAI) with its catalytic add-on (CAPRI), a pelletized catalyst is incorporated along the outside of the horizontal producer well for in situ catalytic upgrading. This downhole upgrading process is one means to produce and partially upgrade heavy oil and bitumen with a reduced environmental footprint. In this study, the effectiveness of pelletized hydrodesulfurisation (HDS) Ni-Mo/Al2O3 catalyst for downhole catalytic upgrading was investigated at 350-425 °C, 20 bar, and 9h-1 space velocity. The additional upgrading due to the presence of the catalyst was evaluated in terms of API gravity, viscosity, boiling point distribution, and sulfur and metals removals, before and after the experiment. The results indicate that the viscosity of the upgraded oil reduced by 1.7, 3 and 5 times less than the feed oil (0.49 Pa.s) depending on the reaction temperature in the range 350 to 425 °C. The average increase in API gravity was approximately 2 to 5° while the gasoline yield showed an improvement of 2.5 to 13 wt.% above that of the original oil. There was also a modest reduction in the sulfur and metals (Ni+V) content of 2-8% and 1.3-9.2% (Ni+V), respectively. However, a possible limiting factor of the process was that rapid catalyst deactivation occurred due to coking

    Eye quietness and quiet eye in expert and novice golf performance: an electrooculographic analysis

    Quiet eye (QE) is the final ocular fixation on the target of an action (e.g., the ball in golf putting). Camerabased eye-tracking studies have consistently found longer QE durations in experts than novices; however, mechanisms underlying QE are not known. To offer a new perspective we examined the feasibility of measuring the QE using electrooculography (EOG) and developed an index to assess ocular activity across time: eye quietness (EQ). Ten expert and ten novice golfers putted 60 balls to a 2.4 m distant hole. Horizontal EOG (2ms resolution) was recorded from two electrodes placed on the outer sides of the eyes. QE duration was measured using a EOG voltage threshold and comprised the sum of the pre-movement and post-movement initiation components. EQ was computed as the standard deviation of the EOG in 0.5 s bins from –4 to +2 s, relative to backswing initiation: lower values indicate less movement of the eyes, hence greater quietness. Finally, we measured club-ball address and swing durations. T-tests showed that total QE did not differ between groups (p = .31); however, experts had marginally shorter pre-movement QE (p = .08) and longer post-movement QE (p < .001) than novices. A group × time ANOVA revealed that experts had less EQ before backswing initiation and greater EQ after backswing initiation (p = .002). QE durations were inversely correlated with EQ from –1.5 to 1 s (rs = –.48 - –.90, ps = .03 - .001). Experts had longer swing durations than novices (p = .01) and, importantly, swing durations correlated positively with post-movement QE (r = .52, p = .02) and negatively with EQ from 0.5 to 1s (r = –.63, p = .003). This study demonstrates the feasibility of measuring ocular activity using EOG and validates EQ as an index of ocular activity. Its findings challenge the dominant perspective on QE and provide new evidence that expert-novice differences in ocular activity may reflect differences in the kinematics of how experts and novices execute skills
