Over summer 2016 the University of Birmingham migrated its main collection, three site libraries and extensive stores into a new, £60 million pound facility while minimising the disruption to users as much as possible. The practical and technical problems of moving staff, services and resources are discussed with specific reference to how the use of ExLibris' Primo and Aleph applications as ‘authorities’ in the form of FindIt@Bham were essential to the success of the project

    Three new materials of composition Fe1-xMgxSb2O4 (x = 0.25, 0.50, 0.75) with the tetragonal schafarzikite structure have been synthesised. Magnetic susceptibility measurements suggest that Fe1-xMgxSb2O4 (x = 0.25, 0.50) are canted antiferromagnets whilst Fe0.25Mg0.75Sb2O4 is paramagnetic. The magnetic ordering temperatures decrease as the Mg2+ concentration increases. The materials form oxygen-excess phases when heated in oxygen-rich atmospheres at temperatures of ~ 350 C. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy shows that the oxidation process involves the oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+. Powder neutron diffraction confirms the location of the excess oxygen within the structural channels and reveals a change in magnetic order at low temperatures from A-type (magnetic moments along {100}) for Fe1xMgxSb2O4 to C-type (magnetic moments along [001]) for the oxidised materials. The change is attributed to a weakening of the antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between edge-linked FeO6 octahedra for the Fe3+-containing materials

    Topotactic fluorine insertion into the channels of FeSb2O4-related materials.

    This paper discusses the fluorination characteristics of phases related to FeSb2O4, by reporting the results of a detailed study of Mg0.50Fe0.50Sb2O4 and Co0.50Fe0.50Sb2O4. Reaction with fluorine gas at low temperatures (typically 230 C) results in topotactic insertion of fluorine into the channels, which are an inherent feature of the structure. Neutron powder diffraction and solid state NMR studies show that the interstitial fluoride ions are bonded to antimony within the channel walls to form Sb – F – Sb bridges. To date, these reactions have been observed only when Fe2+ ions are present within the chains of edge-linked octahedra (FeO6 in FeSb2O4) that form the structural channels. Oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ is primarily responsible for balancing the increased negative charge associated with the presence of the fluoride ions within the channels. For the two phases studied, the creation of Fe3+ ions within the chains of octahedra modify the magnetic exchange interactions to change the ground-state magnetic symmetry to C-type magnetic order in contrast to the A-type order observed for the unfluorinated oxide parents

    This report was commissioned for the ‘HearWell Collaboration’ – an international collaboration with the aim of developing a comprehensive and relevant research portfolio in the areas of prevention, ultra-early detection and treatment of Noise Induced Hearing loss (NIHL) and tinnitus. The report outlines the existing evidence for a range of issues relating to NIHL and tinnitus pertaining primarily to a military population. The report covers: • The prevalence and incidence of NIH and tinnitus • The detection of NIHL and tinnitus • The impact of NIHL and tinnitus on Quality-of-Life (living with HL) • The impact of NIHL and tinnitus on the ability to work of military personnel. • The cost implications of NIHL and tinnitus and the cost-effectiveness of screening and prevention programmes For each of these issues, the volume and nature of the existing secondary evidence (e.g. systematic reviews) and primary evidence was ascertained and key findings and methodological issues reported. This report aims to inform decisions about future research priorities

    Gender effects and third-party punishment in social dilemma games

    This paper investigates whether altruistic punishment when cooperation norms are violated is sensitive to gender effects. Our framework is a one-shot social dilemma game with third-party punishment in which subjects are informed of the others’ gender within their group. This allows us to test whether third-party punishment depends on the punisher’s as well as on the contributors’ gender. We include treatments where the contributors have either the same or different gender from that of the third-party punishers. Our findings indicate that the assignment of altruistic punishment is gender sensitive. While third-party punishment is assigned similarly when contributors have the same gender as third-party punishers, this is not the case when the gender of the contributors and third-party punishers is different. Third-party male punishers sanction significantly harsher female contributors and earn significantly less relative to third-party female punishers when matched with male contributors. Overall, our results have important implications for the design of teams in the presence of free-riding incentives
