Demographic data indicates that the Philippines is aging accompanied by the increasing lifespan of the older population. This study aims to educate and train older people to change their ways of eating, moving, and thinking about life during aging.  The education and training were implemented in the twelve towns and cities with 1069 participants in food intake, fitness, faculty, and faith—an open forum and action planning on sharing knowledge with family, friends, and social networks.  A mixed method design was used in the study and a monitoring form was provided to measure the changes in knowledge and actions of older persons. The study\u27s results revealed that the level of happiness and health of senior citizens varied depending on their food intake, fitness, mental stimulation, and faith. Mayors could share their insights on the happiness of older persons by providing an avenue and space to transform them into less stress, and more happiness, from lonely and sound healthy individuals with strong faith. The impact of the training was identified as Education and training empower older persons about their health, food intake, lifestyle, and finances, change their mindset on everyday activities with self-efficacy; increase awareness of good governance and policies of Senior Citizens; keep the senior citizens’ minds active, which is associated with a lower risk of cognitive decline in older age; inspired by Project HOPe to become healthy, physically fit, and have a healthy diet with morning sunshine (Vitamin D) every day that can lead to lower mortality rates and reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes and; strengthen their relationship with God and take care of their faith/spiritual health by detaching from the worries of their daily life. This study concluded that education and training on the happiness of older persons could change the knowledge, lifestyles, and mindset of the senior citizens. The overwhelming majority of a warm welcome indicated that this kind of first set of interactions was a breath of fresh air, a pioneering venture to support older persons.  Therefore, it is recommended that the education and training of the senior citizens be conducted not only for the officers of the senior citizens’ organizations but also in each barangay (village) to implement the happiness of older persons. There may be a segment in the program that may highlight the significant takeaways and lessons given the build-up of immersion in the different local governments. Keywords:  Happiness of Older Persons, fitness, food, governance, faculty, and fait

The essence of Biot waves in an oscillator with two degrees of freedom

In poroelastic media, i.e., porous structures whose pores contain fluid, a kind of waves can be observed that does not occur in elastic media, the so-called slow P-waves or Biot waves, which may be perceived as opaque when first encountered. In this paper, we pursue two goals: firstly, we want to provide a simple explanatory model of these waves and, secondly, we want to prepare the reader for Biot’s seminal paper. We discretize a finite poroelastic waveguide by Galerkin’s method to arrive at a mechanical system with 2 degrees of freedom and solve the eigenvalue problem of free oscillations. This oscillator representation (ODE) is simpler than the wave representation (PDE) while maintaining salient features of poroelastodynamics and offering a different perspective. In fact, an oscillation is a standing wave with wave velocity and wave length being related to frequency and domain length. In this reduced model, slow P-waves, when they exist, correspond to an oscillation with large phase shift and fast P-waves to an oscillation with small phase shift. The intended audience are engineering or physics graduate students with basic knowledge of linear oscillations, linear differential equations and some understanding of biphasic media

This article deals with the ethical implications and challenges of social media. Drawing on the notion of prosumerism, it argues that not only the companies operating social media platforms bear moral responsibility for ensuring a democratic digital culture of communication, but also and especially their users. The recommendation algorithms of Facebook, Twitter and other platforms have undoubtedly played a major role in the recent crisis of democracy; however, it must also be taken into account that the digital transformation of the public sphere confronts its users with unprecedented media-ethical challenges as well. Against this background, this article highlights, among other things, the importance of media ethics for the promotion of media literacy in the digital age

Cognitive approaches to linguistic creativity have focused primarily on the construction of hybrid or layered conceptualizations on the basis of a variety of cognitive processes, including analogical reasoning, conceptual blending and compression, frame-shifting, deautomatization and many others. In the majority of linguistic studies, the focus is on the creative end product of these mechanisms, rather than on choices and pathways that lead to that product. This can be explained by the fact that researchers generally do not have access to the online meaning construction processes that language users employ in producing creative output. In this paper, we shift the focus of attention from a product perspective to a producer-and process-centered view on creativity. More specifically, we inquire into the incremental steps that language users take in generating novel conceptualizations. In order to gain access to these online strategies of creativity, we make use of a corpus of video-recorded interactions, in which participants were instructed to jointly reflect on future applications for mobile phones. The interactive set-up triggers the verbalization of thought processes and the joint construction of creative conceptualizations. The resulting data provide a wealth of information on pathways, recruitment and composition in creative reasoning. Three types of interactive conceptualization strategies emerge from the analysis of the corpus data: (i) the elaboration of jointly construed blends, (ii) a dynamic conceptualization pattern in which the partners successively scan different (conceptually associated) input concepts, and (iii) an incremental build-up of a complex blended structure through joint addition of relevant new input

Self-Evaluation of E-Learning Platform: Based on Learners’ Feedback

This study implements e-learning evaluation for an online learning platform, ‘tend.mn’. The evaluation is based on learners’ perspective and utilizes Structure-Oriented Model (SURE) which is an e-learning evaluation model[1]. Established in 2019, tend.mn is an online learning platform where the classes mainly on content of educational tools and computer literacy as well as online teaching pedagogy [2]. Having learners from all over the world, it offers 11 courses in Mongolian as language and registered more than 800 users who are mainly from educational sector. The courses are designed in both fully online and blended course type. Many of the users already started their interested courses on the system; however, 220 of them successfully completed their learning progress at least for a single course which means approximately 27 percent of all users. For educators and learning platform providers, it is always essential to keep the platform consistent and efficient. Therefore, we proposed to evaluate the system and understand how it fulfills user’s requirement. With processing of mathematical equations [3] at the background, SURE model was developed to evaluate e-learning and consists of evaluation steps including 1) goal definition, 2) data collection or survey, 3) data analysis through online tool [3] and 4) evaluation results. For this study, four key goals defined including evaluation of course content, course materials, learning system design, and platform attraction where each goal has up to five sub-goals. Data collection survey designed in google form with rating between 0 and 10. In total 68 learners responded to the questionnaire voluntarily during two months. As a user assessment of each key and sub goals, SURE model’s background formulas produced rating between 0.0 lowest and 1.0 highest on required factors which are the evaluation scores. The overall evaluation score is 0.68 (68%) averaging the scores of key goals. It is considered as positive result if the evaluation score is above 50% by the selected evaluation model. In individual sub-goals, minimum score is on A11-gained skill/knowledge quality. In contrast, the higher evaluation scores (more than 0.70) were put on several sub-goals. From learners’ point, they still intend to continue their learning activity and enjoyed to use additional tools on tend.mn. In one hand, considering the evaluation scores on all key goals which are above 50%, the online platform is serving well from the learners’ perspective. On the other hand, since none of the key goals rated over 80%, there are still rooms to improve the system to enhance the learning quality to meet learners’ expectation. SURE model also produces respondents’ individual evaluation scores, where 30% of respondent gave highest score of 1.0 and 2.9% gave lowest of 0.0

The issue deals with the propaganda and media strategies used by Islamic terrorist organisations. Contributions investigate the audiovisual propaganda formats of the so-called Islamic State (IS), the use of media techniques of various degrees of professionality, the rhetorical mechanisms of multimodal propaganda communication, and how to explain scientific results about islamic terrorism to the general public

Using the example of a video series by the ‘Islamic State’, the article sheds light on the threatening effect of terrorist propaganda. Beyond inducing terror, video propaganda aims at an epistemic unsettling of its viewers by using their anticipation and imagination. Viewers are being confused by the fact that their assumption concerning the deceptive nature of propaganda is actually in part, but never fully confirmed. The video series presents British journalist John Cantlie, a prisoner of ‘IS’ since 2012, as an ideological defector who is now supporting the caliphate. It is deliberately left open whether, or better: to what extent, Cantlie is forced to do these performances or to what extent he is possibly actually meaning what he says. Drawing upon Derrida’s concept of the ‘spectre’ and its traces in media theory and terrorism studies, Cantlie is re-conceptualized as a figure of indecision and unavailability which is crucial for understanding the threatening rhetoric and mediality of djihadist propaganda

Many classical as well as modern theories on surveillance connect mechanisms of surveillance directly with a transformation of our way of living. The goal of this article is to examine this connection between surveillance and influence in the works of Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, Zygmunt Bauman, and David Lyon. By employing the concise term “Manipulation” in the sense defined by Alexander Fischer, we gain new perspectives on the hierarchy between the watcher and the watched in their theories, and can derive implications on why surveillance technology is increasingly adopted and accepted in our everyday life

Diaspora, Transnational Heritage, and Poetic Interorality: Negotiating Chinese Caribbean Identity in "Song of the Boatwoman" and "The Godmother and Other Stories"

This paper examines Chinese oral heritage and its contribution to Caribbean interorality in a diasporic context through a focus on individual lives in Meiling Jin’s Song of the Boatwoman and Jan Lowe Shinebourne’s The Godmother and Other Stories. Both Jin and Shinebourne illustrate that Chinese oral heritage, which is not fixed but subject to constant change, can be used in a transformative way to facilitate integration and create a sense of belonging for those participating in the Chinese diaspora in the Caribbean, which provides a new way to understand Chinese Caribbean identity. The linguistic, structural and thematic uses of Chinese oral storytelling and folk customs not only revise colonial history by retrieving the silenced stories of Chinese Caribbean people, but also integrate the Chinese as valid members of the Caribbean community by stressing their shared grounding in the plantation experience and post-independence struggles

Cultural Heritage in Legal Settings: A Semiotic Analysis

    Get PDF
The past three decades have witnessed a remarkable extension of interest in heritage studies from the perspective of international law, which can be understood as a number of interrelated legal instruments on various levels for safeguarding, protecting and maintaining cultural heritage and determining questions of property and rights related to it. This study analyzes the construction of cultural heritage in legal settings from the perspective of semiotics, or cultural semiotics more precisely, focusing on the diversity and dynamics of its meanings and texts. This study shows that heritage law can be understood as a complex sign, which is subject to multiple and alternative interpretations depending on context factors and changing over time and space. It shows the underlying evolutionary logic of culture and society that manifests itself in the construction of heritage and the development of heritage laws, and thus also helps to understand the comparability and compatibility within and beyond multilevel legal instruments and cultures
