Get PDFZiel des Forschungsvorhabens TeD (Textile Deichsicherung) war es, ein textilbasiertes modulares System für die aktive Deichsicherung zu untersuchen, welches den Schutz existierender, jedoch in ihrer Standsicherheit gefährdeter Deiche fokussiert. Somit kann erheblichem volkswirtschaftlichem Schaden vorgebeugt oder dieser zumindest minimiert werden. Forschungsgegenstand war dabei nicht nur die Schutzfunktion am Deich, sondern auch die systematische Ausbringung, ein einfaches Handling beim Auf- und Abbau, ein geringes Gewicht, Lagerung und der Transport des Gesamtsystems im Rahmen des bestehenden Katastrophenschutzsystems. Das Gesamtsystem musste gegenüber verschiedenen Einflüssen (z. B. Wasserdruckbelastung, Wellen- und Anprallwirkungen, mechanische Beanspruchung durch Treibgüter, …) beständig sein.

Harnessing Sri Lanka\u27s Offshore Wind Energy for Net Zero and Regional Carbon Neutrality
Get PDFSri Lanka has approximately 22 million citizens, making it the only country in South Asia with complete electricity grid penetration throughout the nation and uninterrupted service. Despite renewable energy sources, including significant hydropower potential, the reliance on imported fossil fuels remains a significant concern. It should be noted that Sri Lanka possesses an estimated untapped offshore wind potential of approximately 92 GW, which presents both an opportunity and a challenge. This study\u27s problem is identifying and navigating the technical challenges associated with evacuating and using such a large amount of offshore wind energy. Due to the excess energy generated, the existing grid capacity is insufficient to handle the surplus energy. Therefore, leveraging Sri Lanka\u27s abundant wind energy resources is critical to help it reach its Net Zero targets while reducing foreign exchange expenditures on fossil fuel imports and generating revenue from surplus energy sales. This study examines alternative options for harnessing offshore wind energy in Sri Lanka, considering battery storage and hydrogen. A comparison has been performed for the two types of storage. The paper favoured green hydrogen, a burgeoning commodity on the global market, and exports surplus energy to India via a DC link. Wind energy potential has been revised, and a wind farm of 100 MW capacity has worked as a case of a pilot project. To make offshore wind energy more efficient, the authors recommend further exploration of several scenarios. It could include selling offshore wind potential to select decision-makers, extracting enough energy to meet national demands, and harnessing a significant portion of the estimated 92 GW offshore wind energy potential by 2023. The goal is to achieve net-zero emissions and adopt green hydrogen production towards the energy transition
Motion-Capture-gestützte Gestenforschung: Zur Relevanz der Notationstheorie in den Digitalen Geisteswissenschaften
Get PDFIm Aufsatz wird mit Beispielen von synchronoptischen Zeitleistendiagrammen, Diagrammen für historische Narrative komplexer Zusammenhänge und kognitiven Karten gezeigt, wie die Generierung von explanatorischen Hypothesen mittels interaktiver Visualisierungswerkzeuge als Abduktion und allgemein der Gebrauch von solchen Werkzeugen zum diagrammatischen Denken zur Erlangung geisteswissenschaftlicher Erkenntnis semiotisch erklärt werden kann. Damit demonstriert der Artikel, wie sowohl auf informatischer Seite als auch auf geisteswissenschaftlicher Seite die Semiotik einen theoretischen Beitrag zu den Digital Humanities leisten kann. Formale Modellierung als Kern der Digital Humanities ist dabei notwendige Voraussetzung für die informatische Verarbeitung geisteswissenschaftlicher Forschungstätigkeiten. Das betrifft sowohl die algorithmische und die technische Ebene der informatischen Implementierung als auch die computationale Ebene der diagrammatischen Repräsentation. Eine semiotische Erklärung kannsich dabei auf die computationale Ebene konzentrieren, ohne auf die algorithmischen und technischen Details der Implementierung eingehen zu müssen. Eine semiotische Theorie der Digital Humanities kann daher den Schwerpunkt der Analyse auf die Untersuchung diagrammatischer Denkwerkzeuge zur Unterstützung und Erweiterung geisteswissenschaftlicher Forschung im Sinne eines Augmenting Human(ist) Intellect-Ansatzes legen.During the last decade, and especially with the rise of the Digital Humanities, computer-assisted methods for gathering and analysing data have increasingly found their way into the humanities, which were traditionally oriented towards hermeneutics. Data elicitation and analysis are usually linked with quantitative research methods, but they are also connected with the construction of scientific models; they can be regarded as a transcription process that is involved in constituting the respective object of research. In this article, we study the use of motion capture technology for gesture research, in order to show more generally how theoretical modelling is connected with the process that we employed to “capture” co-speech gesture. A semiotic analysis is used to investigate the epistemological status of such data models, as well as the sign processes that determine this status. As a theoretical instrument for the analysis of these computer-assisted processes of modelling and transcription, we apply Nelson Goodman’s theory of notation, which provides clear syntactic and semantic criteria for describing digital, notational, and analogue symbol systems. As a further approach, Ludwig Jäger’s theory of transcription is used to highlight how computer-based modelling techniques constitute the objects of investigation in the humanities. The article asks the following questions: What exactly are we recording when we use digital computer technology to capture human motion? Which criteria can be used to model these semiotic processes? What advantages does motion capture give us, and does it really offer new perspectives in comparison with other techniques such as traditional video recordings? In conclusion, this contribution argues for a semiotic foundation for the digital humanities and comparable approaches in the social sciences
Faktoren effizienter Fachkommunikation
Get PDFZur Klärung der Frage, welche Faktoren die Qualität und Quantität sprachlicher und nichtsprachlicher Erscheinungen innerhalb effizienter Fachkommunikation bestimmen, werden in dem vorliegenden Beitrag zunächst ein Modell kommunikativer Effizienz sowie verschiedene Beispiele für effiziente Kommunikation vorgestellt. Im Anschluss hieran werden auf der Grundlage der Kommunikationsmaximen von Grice vier generelle Faktoren fachkommunikativer Effizienz eingeführt und exemplifiziert. Abschließend wird zwischen Faktoren kommunikativer Effizienz auf der Ebene von Texten einerseits und auf derjenigen sprachlicher und semiotischer Systeme andererseits differenziert.In order to clarify the question of which factors determine the quality and quantity of linguistic and non-linguistic appearances within efficient specialist communication, this article first presents a model of communicative efficiency and various examples of efficient communication. Following this, four general factors of professional communicative efficiency are introduced and exemplified on the basis of Grice’s maxims. Finally, a distinction is made between factors of communicative efficiency on the level of texts on the one hand and on that of linguistic and semiotic systems on the other

Get PDFDie Frage, inwieweit ein Einfluss von Körperlichkeit sich im Alphabet widerspiegelt, kann mit zwei ganz verschiedenen Perspektiven beantwortet werden. Zum einen ergeben sich Einflüsse aus der Wahrnehmung von Körperlichkeit, zum anderen stellt die Körperlichkeit der Schriftnutzer eine Determinante der Schriftgenese dar. Es wird eine informationstheoretische Grundlage formuliert, auf deren Basis die Erörterung der Herkunft und der Geschichte des lateinischen Alphabets erfolgt.Body-related aspects are reflected in the alphabet in two different ways. On the one hand, features of the body are depicted in the early pictographs and ideographs. On the other hand, the structure of the human body determines the use of signs, with regard to both the perception and the production of signs. A perspective of information theory is outlined, and on this basis the origin and history of the Latin alphabet is discussed

Dabei werden die Herausforderungen und Chancen sozialer Netzwerke aus der Perspektive des Journalismus und der Wissensvermittlung beleuchtet um letztlich, die Komplexitäten der sozialen Medien in der heutigen Gesellschaft zu navigieren.The introductory article provides an insight into the evolving landscape of social media, highlighting its initial promise of fostering democratic engagement and social interaction. This contrasts with current challenges such as hate speech, fake news, and manipulation. The transition from passive media consumption to active participation and authorship is brought into focus. The challenges and opportunities of social networks are examined from the perspectives of journalism and knowledge dissemination to ultimately navigate the complexities of social media in today’s society

Get PDFIn diesem Beitrag wird beschrieben, wie Algorithmen für Social-Media-Unternehmen ein wichtiges Mittel sind, um die Aufmerksamkeit der User:innen zu binden und zu erhöhen. Aufmerksamkeit und Verweilzeit sind für diese Unternehmen die wichtigsten Faktoren, weil sie mit der Werbeindustrie stark verflochten sind und daher mehr Zeit auch mehr Einnahmen bedeutet. Die bloße Orientierung an der Aufmerksamkeit, z.B. an den Click-Zahlen, hat aber zur Folge, dass vor allem der Rechtsextremismus in den letzten Jahren auf Social-Media-Plattformen profitieren konnte.This paper describes the use of algorithms as an important tool for social media companies to maintain and increase the attention of their users. Attention and engagement time are the most important factors for these companies as they are strongly intertwined with the advertising industry – and thus more time means more revenue. However, the mere focus on attention, e.g. on click numbers, has meant that right-wing extremism in particular has been able to profit on social media platforms in recent years
Lubrication Monitoring of Roller Chains via Contactless Temperature Measurement
Get PDFAn appropriate lubrication of roller chains is of great significance for their life expectancy. Considering economical and ecological aspects, a minimal but still sufficient application of lubricant is desirable. A prerequisite for this is, however, a reliable determination of the current lubrication state of the chain. This paper presents a series of experiments in which three chains with increasing wear progression were tested on a chain test rig at different lubrication levels while the chain temperature was measured with contactless infrared thermometers. All chains show a significant dependency of the chain temperature on the lubrication level, this influence grows with increasing wear. Simultaneously, the influence of chain wear on the chain temperature is significantly smaller. The results show that measuring the chain temperature with contactless infrared thermometers offers a simple and cost-efficient option to monitor the lubrication state of roller chains

Get PDFDas vorliegende Themenheft widmet sich der Semiotik der Diaspora und beleuchtet die vielschichtige Beziehung zwischen literarischer, diskursiver und rhetorischer Zeichenproduktion im Kontext von Erfahrungen der Diaspora, des Exils und der Migration. Die Beiträge in diesem Heft erforschen die Auswirkungen unterschiedlicher Migrations- und Landungs-Erfahrungen auf die Narrative und konstruierten Identitäten diasporischer Gemeinschaften. Die Beiträge beleuchten anhand verschiedener Textgattungen und historischer Kontexte semiotische Prinzipien kultureller Identitätskonstruktion, Exilerfahrungen und Hybridität innerhalb der Diaspora wie im Blick auf diese. Deutlich wird, dass entsprechende Zeichensysteme weit über Diaspora-Communities hinaus in die Mehrheitsgesellschaften hineinwirken und unsere globalisierte Welt grundlegend beeinflussen.Dedicated to the semiotics of diaspora, this issue examines the complex relationships between literary, discursive and rhetorical sign production in contexts of diaspora, exile, and migration. The various contributions explore the impact of different experiences of migration and landing on the narratives and constructed identities of diasporic communities. Using various textual genres and historical contexts, the articles shed light on semiotic principles of cultural identity construction and hybridity within the diaspora and in relation to it. It becomes clear that the influence of diasporic meaning construction goes far beyond diaspora communities, influencing society as a whole and shaping our contemporary globalised world
