Hard and Soft Skills Self-Assessment Relationship with Satisfaction of Graduates
This paper presents the results of a survey of 299 bachelor\u27s degree graduates of Business Administration and Management programs of Mongolian University of Science and Technology conducted in May 2023. In the survey, graduates were asked to assess the knowledge and skills they have obtained during their bachelor\u27s degree studies, university facilities, extracurricular activities, and subsequent career growth. The knowledge and skills acquired by the graduates were grouped into 2 groups by factor analysis: soft and hard skills. University facility indicators are also grouped into 2 factors: the first one includes physical facilities and student services, and the second is teaching and organization. Graduates’ self-assessment of soft skills is higher than that of hard skills, but it was found that hard skills have a greater influence on satisfaction ratings. Hard skills were found to be more related to teaching and management. The amount of the salary at the time of the survey and the graduation date, are found to have no statistically insignificant relationship with graduates’ satisfaction level
Bending tests on circular braided ropes under variation of different peripheral test conditions
Various companies are working on the utilisation of high performance fibre ropes (HPFR) in industrial cranes and conveyor systems. In a collaboration between Konecranes and TUC, application-relevant influencing variables on bending wear were investigated experimentally. This paper summarizes these test results from single cyclic bending over sheave (CBOS) tests on circular braided ropes. The ropes investigated are single-ply, uncovered circular (round) braided ropes made of UHMW-PE yarns. The ropes are industrially manufactured and have a coating. Different factor levels were varied as part of the investigations. These are i) the strand load (referred to as safety factor), ii) the angle of entry of the rope on the test sheave (referred to as fleet angle), iii) the test sheave material (variation between polyamide PA and steel ST sheaves), iv) the bending ratio BV (as the ratio of the uncoiling diameter D to the rope diameter d) and v) the ambient temperature in the bending zone (referred to as TBZ in the following). Finally, the results are compared and a known service life model is applied
How the Digital Humanities (DH) will be able to do justice to the diverse disciplines and subjects of investigation they are currently pursuing is a hot topic. Again and again it is suggested that the DH face new challenges that will require new methods, tools and bridges between disciplines. It is less frequently acknowledged that DH are not the only initiative to face such a task. Indeed, models for integration across disciplines on the practical as well as the theoretical level are present in other endeavors as well. In particular, this article illustrates the relevance for DH of results of both a practical and a theoretical nature from multimodal semiotics. It is suggested that it is precisely in multimodal semiotics that DH could find a foundation sufficiently broad and comprehensive to advance many of the fundamental discussions currently underway
Bateman u.a. 2017 bzw. Wildfeuer u.a. 2020).Most media theoretical approaches have paid relatively little attention to the needs and requirements of multimodality. At the same time, the most widespread theories of multimodality have just as little dealt with the concept of media. As a consequence, media-theoretical positions on the phenomenon of multimodality as well as multimodal positions on the concept of media are weakened. In this article, we suggest that this situation hinders systematic empirical analysis of complex multimodal artefacts and actions and introduce a concept of media combining both multimodal-semiotic (Bateman 2013, 2016) and media or image theoretical foundations (Sachs-Hombach 2013). This foundational framework builds on our previous empirical analyses of multimodal phenomena in film, comics, graphic design, images and diagrams in order to articulate mutually productive relationships between media, semiotic modes and genres. All three variables are seen as essential for effective analysis: Media bring socio-cultural and institutional aspects into play that establish „biotopes for semiosis“ (after Winkler 2008: 213); semiotic modes trace the shaping of materials so that they can carry communicative actions; while genres allow for descriptions of communicative goals ranging across media and semiotic modes (Bateman 2014a). We argue that a clear separation of the theoretical and analytical responsibilities of media, semiotic modes and genres establishes a number of methodological principles that facilitate the concrete handling of complex multimodal situations as well as supporting more precise analyses of transmedial actions and artefacts (cf. Bateman et al. 2017 or Wildfeuer et al. 2020)

Films of the German ‘Autorenfilm’ represent aesthetic products, that can be read as a rebellion against the economically established German Post-War-Film perceived as being superficial and meaningless; thus representing an attack on what Lotman described as cultural centre. By strategically incorporating medial products such as the German ‘Schlager’ – a genre that can be understood as a means of escape from social reality in the 1960s – into the setting of the Autorenfilm, cultural phenomena are set in a new context and thus contour an objectionable system of cultural values. The German Schlager is thus being defamed as an unintellectual and ridiculous music genre, which can be interpreted as an attack on a ‘mainstream’ culture that tends to being merely consumed but hardly being reflecte
This paper examines the interactive process of meaning constitution of controversial concepts from the perspective of Interactional Linguistics and Cognitive Linguistics. Based on the fact that, despite the expanded methodological repertoire and scopus of research on talk-in-interaction, the interactive construction of linguistic meanings continues to play only a minor role, it is argued that Fauconnier’s theory of so-called “Mental Spaces” including frames (which structure Mental Spaces) allows to precisely describe both the online process of lexical meaning formation and its relevance to language use in interaction. Specifically, three procedures of implicit metalinguistic elaborations are explicated with reference to their underlying cognitive activities: conceptual integration, conceptual disintegration, conceptual elaboration. Following Deppermann’s (2007: 225) proposal of a “methodological mentalism”, the increased inclusion of cognitive-linguistic issues in Interactional Linguistics opens up a programmatic perspective for more comprehensive studies of word meanings in context
This paper deals with two basic questions: Firstly, to what extent is Mental Space and Conceptual Integration Theory (MSCI) an adequate tool for describing complex semiotic processes involved in multimodal interaction and how can this tool be further developed? Our focus lies on the concept of representation and the fundamental distinction between ontologically and semiotically defined mental spaces, and we hypothesize that sign-based mental spaces are of primary relevance. Secondly, to what extent can co-speech gestures contribute to an empirical foundation of the mental-space networks assigned to communication partners by an external observer? Gesture studies show that aspects of mental spaces are embodied by the speaker and are thus accessible for intersubjective observation. The necessity of the distinction between ontologically and semiotically differentiated mental spaces, and the primary status of the latter, are substantiated by analyses of video recordings that reveal processes of interactive, multimodal space construction in the domains of deixis and negation. Hence, our findings also challenge the common distinction between ‘fictive’ and ‘real’ space
The issue is dedicated to Schlager as a subgenre of (primarily German) folk music from various disciplinary and theoretical perspectives, starting from the assumption that Schlager cannot be explained without reference to filmic sign systems as well as social, cultural and national meaning-making processes. The semiotic perspective enables an in-depth analysis of the embedding and functions of Schlager in German-speaking culture, especially in film and entertainment, with a particular focus on the first post-war decades. The contributions shed light on, among other topics, the role of Schlager in aligning individual desires with collective needs in the GDR (former East Germany), the depiction of an idealised world in West German post-war Schlager films, the flexible adaptation of Schlager to cultural change and the surprising functions of Schlager in auteur films of the 1960s
Mental Spaces
This special issue sheds light on the process of meaning constitution in face-to-face interaction, combining approaches based on cognitive frames with mental space theory. Deliberately avoiding the juxtaposition of interactional and cognitive approaches, the contributions of this issue establish a link between data-based multimodal interaction research on the one hand and cognitive-semantic descriptive approaches and categories on the other, with some contributions incorporating frame-semantic perspectives
