The “privilege of thinking”: an essay to interpret
We consider in this article a particular form of the “battle of ideas” which we differentiate from other ways of open confrontation, as the refutation. It has to do with a subtler modality that tries to meddle in the relative weights of the theoretical components of certain conceptions. We associate this form of the theoretical production with the materialistic critic; this allows us to connect Espinosa’s and Marx’s theoretical efforts, and also to essay an interpretation of a controversial theory – relative to the privilege of the attribute of thought – that Deleuze elaborates in his reading of the Ethics
We are all crazy... The modern subject and the geological fissure
O artigo visa questionar as posições opostas do Sujeito Pleno cartesiano e do não-sujeito pós-moderno, que pretende criticar as razões do primeiro. This paper aims to question the opposite positions of the full cartesian subjetct and the non-subject of post-modernity, that intends to criticize the reasons of the first. What is omitted in this opposition is an internal tendency towards auto-criticism in the modernity itself that allow us to think a thid subject, that is tragic and faulty — a product of the violent history
A treatise concerning the principles of human knowledge (1710). The paper aims to examine the relation between to be and to perceive starting from the analysis of George Berkeley´s central principle - esse est percipi -, as it is introduced by the author in A treatise concerning the principles of human knowledge (1710). To develop our analysis we will follow the treatment Grayling offers on the fundamentation of this principle and we intend to show that Berkeley´s arguments are organized in three levels: the strictly empirical level (sense data); the phenomenal level (the world of ordinary experience); and the metaphysical level that explains the two former cases
Intersubjectivity and transindividuality from Leibniz and Spinoza
One of the greatest persistent misunderstanding around leibnizian philosophy is to think it as a sort of spinozism. Likewise, every attempt to show Leibniz and Spinoza as opposed to each other do not surpass the hegelian interpretation, according to which both philosophies are seen as antagonism between universality and individuality. Our aim is, on the contrary, to contrast one philosopher to another in respect to the matter of individuality and their relations to the XXth Century thinking: on the one hand, the husserlian intersubjectivity as the philosophical continuation of the Monadology; on the other hand, the simondnian concept of transindividuality, which upon the developments of Balibar turns the spinozian thought possible to be continued in contemporaneity. We intend to show the distance that keep both systems away one from another by means of an interpretation that do not simply repeat the old hegelian refrain
A passage from Book VII of the Nichomachean Ethics and another from the De Anima by Aristotle allow us the demonstrate that the Philosopher is very near to the "solution" that Spinoza offers to the problem of the akrasia (incontinence or weakness of the will). Circumscribing such problem into the field of appetite and pleasure (epithymia), introducing the notions of desire (oréxis) as the motor or practical action, Aristotle points to an idea of an affective knowledge that, however, will only be completely developed much later, by the theory of affections present in Spinoza´s Ethics. We shall see that in the latter the problem of akrasia acquires another statute and "solution". But if the solution of the problem was not completely formulated by Aristotle, we shall try to show that, embryonically, it was already there, and so Aristotle can be seen as a precursor of Spinoza´s theory of knowledge
Leibniz on freedom of the being
In this paper we intend to verify the way in which Leibniz establishes a notion of liberty able to do not contradict the conception of a world in which all events are previously determined. Therefore, we are going to examine the way in which Leibniz can dissolve the opposition between determination and contingency of the events by means of notion of being as action. Furthermore, we are going to indicate aspects in which the Leibnizian project is opposed to the Cartesian dualism of substances and intends to overcome its dilemmas related both to Physics, in consequence of the complete passivity of res extensa, and to Metaphysics, above all in the aspects that res cogitans appears as a kind of denial of res extensa. Such a denial will imply the notion of will as pure arbitrariness, which rejects its regulation by any principle, and it will establish reason as an instrument of arbitrary wil
Montaigne´s sagesse as critical apropriation of humanist heritage
The Renaissance’s thought was responsible for a vigorous reflection on the metaphysical man’s standing in the cosmos and on the action’s role in the social life. Taking into account this context, this paper intends to debate on Montaigne’s thought, regarding its link as well its divergences from humanist thought, especially these divergences that made possible the development of the peculiar philosopher’s manière: the essay form
Divine goodness and contingency on Leibniz
In his correspondence with Arnauld, Leibniz shows us how the appeal to the divine will is fundamental to guarantee a space to contingency in a metaphysics that does not allow indetermination. Nevertheless, we must stil aks if divine goodness, one of the perfections included in the notion of God, does not render necessary what Leibniz had called contingent. This is why we will examine Leibniz´s notion of divine will, especially the distinction between antecedent and consequent will, intending to determine in which measure divine goodness (understood as the most perfect will) implies or not a universal ncessitarism
Leibniz: expression and universal Characteristic
Leibniz´s criticism of the a priori proof of God´s existence, taken from Anselm by Descartes, is restricted to the observation that, before the existence of a perfect being may be admitted, one must prove the possiblity of the notion of such a beiing, which, in turn, requires a demonstration of the compatibility between divine perfections. The proof is correct, but incomplete. Leibniz never completed this proof, except for a text written in 1676, since, to manage that, he would have to employ his universal Characteristic, the elements of which would be the simple thoughts expressing the simple forms, or divine perfections. The project to creat a forma language, or universal Characteristic, was never abndoned by Leibniz, even thought it was to remain unfinished. However, in outlining the project, he clearly states that the Characteristic would accurately explain the necessary truths, but not the contingent truths (which could be admitted with a high degree of probability but not with exactness). If it were possible to prove the compatibility between divine perfections, it would also be necessary to explain how to explain how the incompatibility between possible worlds stems from this primordial compatibility, and how the contingent originates from within the necessary. Our hypothesis is that the apparent failure of the Characteristic project and the lack of understanding of the relationship between necessity and contingency results in a theory of expression that, in opposition to the clarity of intuition, reserves a place for the confuse and the obscure
