Hintergrund und Ziel
Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund (MmM) stellen eine starke zunehmende Bevölkerungsgruppe dar1, die 
häufig in mehrfachbelasteten Stadtquartieren2 lebt und i.d.R. einen schlechteren Gesundheitszustand aufweist3. 
Obwohl sie verstärkt von den positiven Effekten urbaner Grünräume auf das soziale, physische und psychische 
Wohlbefinden profitieren könnten, sind kulturspezifische Nutzungsbedarfe derselben kaum untersucht. Ziel 
dieser Pilotstudie ist daher zu ermitteln, welche gesundheitliche Relevanz urbane Grünräume für MmM haben 
und ob spezifische Bedarfe an Grünräume formuliert werden.
Methodik
Es wurden neun leitfadengestützte 
Interviews mit MmM aus vier 
Indikatorgruppen geführt und nach 
Mayring4 ausgewertet: Afrika (n=2), 
Naher Osten/Orient (n=2), Osteuropa 
(n=2) und Südasien (n=3).

Diskussion
Urbane Grünräume scheinen für MmM eine überdurchschnittlich bedeutsame Gesundheitsressource darzu-
stellen. Drei der vier Indikatorgruppen haben konkrete Vorstellungen zur Beschaffenheit und Gestaltung eines 
„grünen Lieblingsortes“, der durchweg sehr naturnah ausfällt. Ihm wird eine hohe Relevanz für die eigene 
psychische Gesundheit zugesprochen und sein Verschwinden löst Wut bzw. Trauer aus. Die Ergebnisse weisen 
in mit Stadtgrün „unterversorgten“ Stadtquartieren, auf eine für MmM erhöhte Anfälligkeit für psychische 
Gesundheitsbeeinträchtigungen hin. Eine gute Erreichbarkeit wird als maßgeblich benannt, um Stadtnatur auch 
nutzen zu können.

Artificial conversational agents, such as voice assistants and conversational interfaces, are
now widely available.  They are primarily used casually in the home for convenience and
entertainment  purposes,  but more impactful  applications,  e.g.,  as assistive technologies  in
home-care settings, are becoming more relevant. It is thus important that they are easy to use
for all types of users. Despite the significant advances in automatic speech recognition and
natural  language  processing  technologies  over  the  past  decade,  the  actual  conversational
capabilities of these assistants are still limited. One reason is that much of the interactional
infrastructure that humans rely upon to smoothly make progress in conversation – surfacing
in seemingly ‘small’ phenomena such as feedback, turn-taking signals, or repair – are often
overlooked. In this talk,  I will  focus on computational models of the metacommunicative
mechanism  of  linguistic  and  multimodal  feedback  and  their  effects  on  interactions  with
conversational agents and will make the argument that research in conversational technology,
but  also  the  disciplines  working  on  human  speech,  should  pay  more  attention  to
metacommunicative and interactional mechanisms and phenomena.

It is generally assumed that filler particles (FPs), such as äh and ähm in German, are mainly 
unconsciously produced and thus may prove useful in forensic casework (Jessen, 2008; Künzel, 
1987). Disfluencies like FPs, in combination with sound-prolongations, repetitions, and self-
interruptions, show a speaker-specific pattern with evidence for German (Braun & Rosin, 2015) and 
English (McDougall & Duckworth, 2018). However, the consistency of this pattern may be instable 
across dissimilar speaking tasks, e.g. voice messages compared to interviews (Harrington et al., 
2021). 
 
For this study, we aim to present the characteristics of FPs for 100 German male speakers in two 
conditions: in a Lombard condition and in a non-Lombard ('normal') condition. The data was 
collected in 2001 as part of the Pool2010 Corpus (Jessen et al., 2005) which uses a picture-description 
task with forbidden “taboo” words to elicit spontaneous speech. The mean recording time for each 
speaker is ca. 4 minutes in each condition, amounting to a total duration of ca. 13 h for the sub-corpus 
investigated here. A typical feature of Lombard speech is an increase of the mean fundamental 
frequency of speakers as the vocal effort is increased (Jessen et al., 2005). But it is yet unclear to what 
extent the Lombard condition influences the distribution and phonetic characteristics of FPs. Features 
under investigation are the frequency (items/min) of different types of FPs (uh, uhm, hm, glottal FPs 
and tongue clicks), the occurrence of silences before and after the FP, the duration of their segments, 
fundamental frequency, vowel quality of the vocalic portion of FPs, as well as creaky voice/glottal 
pulses during the FP. 
 
Preliminary results show that the frequency of typical FPs (uh, uhm, hm) decreases from normal to 
Lombard speech while the frequency of tongue clicks and glottal FPs (produced with creak/creaky 
voice only) increases in the Lombard condition (see Table 1). Furthermore, the most frequent FP used 
by these speakers is the vocalic type (uh) which occurs more than twice as often as the vocalic-nasal 
type (uhm). Figure 1 shows that uhm is generally longer than uh. Moreover, the longest FPs occur 
between silences, i.e. in a pause. Those FPs that are articulated within an inter-pausal unit (IPU) are 
shortest. FPs in IPU-final position are longer than in IPU-initial position which is in line with the 
effect of pre-pausal lengthening. The pattern of a “duration hierarchy” (see Figure 1) holds true for 
both filler particles uh and uhm. 
 
Observations on the individual-speaker level reveal that each feature shows high between-speaker 
variation, so that the rate for the FP uh ranges from 0-19 items/min, for uhm from 0-15 items/min 
while hm generally shows a lower frequency with a range of 0-7 items/min. The extreme values may 
be particularly interesting for forensic casework, e.g. three speakers with a higher glottal FP-rate were 
observed (> 3 standard deviations higher than mean). The poster will show the general trend of the 
participants but also focus on the individual performance of the speakers and the variation within the 
dataset.

 Die linguistische Forschung hat sich in Bezug auf Social Media bisher vor allem mit 
geschriebener Sprache beschäftigt, dabei u.a. mit der Verwendung von Emojis. Beispielsweise 
wurde gezeigt, dass diese verwendet werden, um semantischen Fokus zu markieren, wobei das 
Wort im Fokus zwischen zwei Emojis steht [1]. Mit Ausnahme der prosodischen Analyse von 
gesprochener Großschreibung (Caps) [2] ist aber wenig über den Zusammenhang von Social 
Media und gesprochener Sprache bekannt. [2] identifizierte Caps als Ausdruck emotionaler 
Erregung (höhere Intensität, höhere F0), die als Wut, Aufregung und Freude interpretiert 
werden kann. Unser Beitrag befasst sich mit der gesprochen-sprachlichen Realisierung von 
Instagram-Kommentaren, entnommen aus einem an der Universität Zürich entstandenen und 
aufbereiteten Korpus bestehend aus 29.373 Kommentaren zum Körperakzeptanz-Diskurs aus 
den Jahren 2020/2021 [3]. Wir untersuchen in einem Produktionsexperiment, ob und inwieweit 
es neben schriftsprachlichen auch gesprochen-sprachliche konventionalisierte Muster zur 
Realisierung dieser Kommentare gibt. Instagram-Kommentare als anschlusskommunikative 
Texte stellen eine soziale Praxis dar, für die sich eine Vielzahl an Routinen des digitalen 
Schreibens herausgebildet hat [4]. Zum Teil handelt es sich dabei um community-spezifische 
Routinen [5]. Unser Experiment geht daher der Frage nach, ob sich innerhalb der Community 
der User:innen (Literates) nicht nur schriftliche, sondern auch prosodische Muster entwickelt 
haben, mit der die geschriebenen Muster realisiert werden [6]. Ist dies der Fall, müssten sich 
Literates von Non-Literates, d.h. Personen, die kein Teil der digitalen Community sind und 
diese (sowie ähnliche) Plattformen nicht nutzen, in ihrer Realisierung unterscheiden. 
Um diese Frage zu klären, wurden geschriebene Kommentare aus dem oben angeführten 
Instagram-Korpus gesichtet und vier Phänomene identifiziert, die in einer Lesestudie (mit je 
vier Experimental- und einer Kontrollbedingung) untersucht werden: die Verwendung 
verschiedener Emojis, die Verwendung von Caps, die orthographische Reduplikationen von 
Vokalen (Längung) sowie die Reduplikation von Wörtern (Tab. 1). Aufgabe der Proband:innen 
war es, die Kommentare möglichst natürlich zu lesen und genau das auszudrücken, was 
schriftlich kommuniziert wird. Um dies zu erleichtern, sollten sie sich vorstellen, dass die 
gesprochenen Kommentare Personen zugänglich gemacht werden, die die Kommentare nicht 
lesen können. Jede Proband:in äußerte sowohl die experimentelle als auch die 
Kontrollbedingung. Anschließend füllten sie einen Fragebogen zur Frequenz der Social Media 
Nutzung aus (Abb. 2). Bisher wurden drei Proband:innen aufgenommen (geplant sind 24). 
Die akustische Datenanalyse umfasst F0-, Dauer- und Intensitätsmessungen sowie eine 
Analyse der Akzent- und Grenztöne (Abb. 2). Erste Ergebnisse (N = 3 Proband:innen) zeigen, 
dass im Vergleich zu den neutralen Bedingungen die Phänomene Längungen und Emojis mit 
höherer Intensität und längerer Dauer produziert wurden; besonders in der Emoij-Bedingung 
konnten wir eine Intonation beobachten, die durch einen plateauartigen Grenzton (H-%) 
gekennzeichnet war (Abb. 2). Wie erwartet wurde das in caps präsentierte Wort mit höherer 
Intensität und f0 produziert [2]. In einem nächsten Schritt sollen nun die akustischen Parameter 
mit der Social Media Nutzung in Verbindung gebracht werden. Unter der Annahme einer 
sogenannten Insta-Prosodie, erwarten wir, dass sich die prosodischen Muster der Literates in 
den experimentellen Bedingungen deutlicher von der Kontrollbedingung unterscheiden 
werden, und dass diese Muster, innerhalb der Gruppe der Literates, ähnlicher sein werden als 
innerhalb Non-Literates. Die Ergebnisse werden unter Gesichtspunkten der linguistischen 
Erfahrung und des routinisierten Umgangs mit Social-Media-Angeboten diskutiert.

In the recent decade, network theory has been increasingly adopted by the psychological 
sciences, including language acquisition research. A growing field is the construction of 
phonological networks that link words differing by one phonological segment (Levenshtein 
distance) in a network encompassing the entire lexicon of a language (see Figure 1). These 
networks have been shown to be meaningful psycholinguistic constructs in first languages, 
influencing lexical access, processing, and activation spreading in phonological neighborhoods 
[1-3].  
An important question concerns the development of phonological networks and how 
network connectivity changes when new words are added during language acquisition. 
Previous research has investigated network growth principles in English and Dutch as first 
languages [4], but phonological networks and their growth in second languages have not been 
studied.  
The present study analyzes growth mechanisms and patterns in the phonological networks 
of second language learners of English. Vocabulary lists of each of the six CEFR proficiency 
levels (A1-C2) were gathered from the Cambridge Learner Corpus with which six phonological 
ESL networks were constructed. Network evolution from the lowest level A1 to the highest C2 
was analyzed in terms of network-theoretical growth algorithms.  
Results show a dominance of the algorithm preferential attachment at lower proficiency 
stages, where dense phonological neighborhoods gain the majority of new neighbors entering 
the lexical system [5]. This “rich-gets-richer” mechanism is at the heart of the Barabási-Albert 
network model [6]. Intriguingly, this mechanism is reversed to “inverse preferential 
attachment” as the lexical network evolves to higher proficiency levels. Here, sparse 
neighborhoods become the beneficiaries of phonological neighbor addition. The reversal 
indicates a change in cognitive learning strategies. A similar growth pattern was observed in 
phonological networks of first language users of English, and the findings of the present study

Phonetic Variation and Syllabic Structures in Italian and German Speech

In human spontaneous speech, the phonetic realization of words may vary and deviate from 
their “canonical form”. These deviations may concern segment changes, such as vowel 
centralization or consonant lenition, or segment deletion [1]. Hence, they have been usually 
referred to as “reduction phenomena”. However, numerous studies in different languages have 
shown that these phenomena are not the exception to the rule but rather represent the rule in 
spoken language communication [see 2], which may be due to linguistic factors, like prosodic 
features, lexical category, discursive function, and be affected by the sociolinguistic factors 
related to the communicative situation [3]. Therefore, studies investigating these phenomena 
are required to contribute to unveiling the functioning of the speech production and 
comprehension mechanisms, improve ASR performances and support foreign language 
learning.  
This study aims at exploring the phonetic variation (and reduction) patterns that may be 
observed in the speech chain, and their relation to linguistic structures, in particular syllabic 
structures and stress, considering two different languages: Italian and German. 
The investigation was based on the Italian and German datasets of the Nocando corpus [4] 
which consist of spoken narrative texts mostly produced by university students (11 Italian and 
8 German), so the communicative situation was the same for both datasets. The audio files and 
transcriptions were processed using the WebMAUS Basic services [5]. The phonological and 
phonetic transcriptions were manually edited in Praat [6] and syllabified according to the 
principles of onset maximization and sonority sequencing [7]. The alignment between the 
sequence of phonological syllables and the one of phonetic syllables was evaluated using 
SCLITE, which is a tool included in the Speech Recognition Scoring Toolkit (SCTK) provided 
by the NIST. The evaluation output reports as “Deletion” the cases where a phonetic syllable 
is found in place of two phonological ones; as “Substitutions” the cases where a phonetic 
syllable is different from the corresponding phonological one; as “Correct” the cases where the 
phonetic and the phonologic syllables are alike. The phonological syllables were also annotated 
for their phonetic structure and saliency (lexical stress). For statistical analysis, Generalized 
Linear Mixed Models were fitted: the evaluation levels were considered as dependent 
variables; the Languages, Syllabic Structure and Lexical Stress as interacting independent 
variables, and Speaker as random effect. 
The analysis is based on 2050 phonological syllables, that is 950 in the Italian and 1100 in 
the German dataset. Significant results reveal that the language, the syllabic structure and its 
saliency all can represent significant predictors of phonetic variation. More specifically, Italian 
data present significantly more Deletion phenomena than German data (see Figure 1). CV 
represents the most stable structure, which is significantly less subjected to variation, in both 
Italian and German. Then, as expected, unstressed syllables are significant predictors of 
Deletion phenomena, however, only for German they also significantly predict Substitution 
phenomena. 
Further investigation is concerning the qualitative analysis of Deletion and Substitution 
phenomena.

Bei Erwachsenen hat neben dem biologischen Geschlecht auch die Geschlechtsidentität 
einen Einfluss auf akustische und perzeptuelle Merkmale in der Stimme [1, 2]. Bei Kindern 
lässt sich bereits im Alter von zwei bis drei Jahren eine solche Identifikation mit bestimmten 
geschlechtsspezifischen Eigenschaften feststellen [3, 4]. Zudem können schon 
Grundschulkinder ihre Stimme zur Nachahmung des eigenen oder entgegengesetzten 
biologischen Geschlechts bewusst verändern [5, 6]. Deshalb liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass 
die Geschlechtsidentität auch bei präpubertären Kindern eine Rolle für Akustik und 
Perzeption spielt. Dies würde unter anderem erklären, warum bereits im frühen Kindesalter 
geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede in den Stimmen auftreten und wahrgenommen werden 
[7-12], obwohl sich Jungen und Mädchen vor der Pubertät in der Größe ihres Larynx und 
Vokaltrakts kaum voneinander unterscheiden [13, 14].  
Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die perzeptuellen und akustischen Korrelate des 
Geschlechts in präpubertären Stimmen. Hierzu wurden spontansprachliche und inhaltlich 
kontrollierte Audioaufnahmen von über 60 Kindern aus zwei deutschen Grundschulen 
angefertigt. Die Kinder wurden sowohl in der ersten Klasse im Alter von sechs bis sieben 
Jahren als auch in der zweiten Klasse im Alter von sieben bis acht Jahren aufgenommen. 
Zudem wurde die selbsteingeschätzte Geschlechtsidentität der Kinder erfasst. 167 
erwachsene Hörer*innen schätzten anschließend das Geschlecht der Stimmen auf einer 
Sieben-Punkte-Skala ein. Die akustische Analyse der Aufnahmen (f0, Formanten, HNR, 
Tempo etc.) wurde in Bezug zur Geschlechtsidentität und zur Perzeption im Hörexperiment 
gesetzt. 
In der Auswertung der Erstklässler zeigt sich, dass die Geschlechtsidentität der Jungen und 
Mädchen signifikant verschiedenen ist. Das Hörexperiment macht deutlich, dass manche 
Kinder besonders starke Korrelate von Geschlecht in ihrer Stimme haben und von den 
Hörer*innen einheitlich „männlich“ oder „weiblich“ wahrgenommen werden, andere Kinder 
wirken hingegen geschlechtsambivalent und besitzen diese Merkmale nicht.  
Mittelt man die akustischen Parameter der Jungen und Mädchen, treten nur wenige 
systematische Unterschiede zwischen beiden Geschlechtern auf. Untersucht man hingegen 
die Akustik der fünf am „männlichsten“ und „weiblichsten“ wahrgenommenen Stimmen, 
lassen sich signifikante Unterschiede in der Grundfrequenz, in den Formanten und in der 
Größe des akustischen Vokalraums finden. Eine Regressionsanalyse zeigt einen signifikanten 
Einfluss der Grundfrequenz und der Geschlechtsidentität auf die Perzeption der Stimmen 
dergestalt, dass die Kinder umso weiblicher wahrgenommen werden, je höher ihre 
Grundfrequenz und je „weiblicher“ ihre Geschlechtsidentität ist (siehe Abbildung 1). In einer 
hierarchischen Clusteranalyse kristallisieren sich vier Sprechergruppen heraus, die sich vor 
allem hinsichtlich Grundfrequenz, akustischem Vokalraum sowie Center of Gravity und 
Skewness der Sibilanten unterscheiden. Zudem lässt sich eine signifikant negative 
Korrelation zwischen Skewness und Geschlechtsidentität feststellen, auch innerhalb der 
Jungengruppe. 
Die Studie ist Teil eines DFG-geförderten Langzeitprojekts (DFG 440882807) mit 
Aufnahmen von deutschsprachigen Kindern einer ersten bis dritten Klasse (sechs bis neun 
Jahre), weitere Ergebnisse folgen.

Machine Learning models
To help provide new (planning) strategies for 
healthier urban environments, this project 
proposes to display diverse non-pre-deter-
mined spatial, socio-cultural as well as 
Corona-related datasets (Covid-19 cases, 
vaccinations) in space and time. Our research 
aims to overcome challenges of existing rese-
arch due to biases, and lack of detail that 
result from a varying and inconsistent (pre-) 
selection of static, singular, or limited so-
cio-cultural data. The main purpose of this 
project is to ascertain the relationships bet-
ween health factors and Covid-19-related 
features (outcomes) by visualizing and analy-
zing crossed datasets in space over time in a 
data-driven approach.

better understanding of the role of the built environ-
ment on the spread of the corona virus and the 
impact of vaccination

the dynamics and complexity of the evolution of the

2 Immissionsschutz und planerische Zuordnung 
▪ Wir wissen: Die Strahlungsintensität (Immission) der HF-EMF einer Quelle nimmt 
mit dem Quadrat der Entfernung ab.
▪ Damit lässt sich das übliche Prinzip planerischer Handhabung des 
Immissionsschutzes durch Zuordnung empfindlicher Nutzungen (WR/WA) zu 
störenden Nutzungen (GE/GI/Anlagen) anwenden.
Bei gegebenem Ausbreitungsverhalten von einer Quelle aus ergeben sich drei 
planerische Steuerungsgrößen: 
▪ f1: Abstand verändern, um 
eine tolerable Immission zu 
erreichen,
▪ f2: Gradient durch Höhe der 
Emission (hier: Antennen-
leistung) verändern,
▪ f3: Definition zulässiger 
Immission (Richtwert) mit 
Folge für Antennenleistung

Mobilfunkstrahlung
▪ Beeinflussung der Hirnströme wissenschaftlich ausreichend nachgewiesen.
▪ Für Beeinflussung der Durchblutung des Gehirns, Beeinträchtigung der 
Spermienqualität, Destabilisierung der Erbinformation sowie für Auswirkungen 
auf die Expression von Genen, den programmierten Zelltod und oxidativen 
Zellstress werden deutliche Hinweise gesehen (Schweizerische 
Eidgenossenschaft 2015: 4). 
▪ Krebsstudien an Tieren (NTP 2018, Falcioni et al. 2018) und epidemiologische 
Langzeit-Befunde an Menschen (Hardell et al. (2018) zeigen gleiche Tumore.
4 Fachliche und rechtliche Risikobewertung
erforderlich
Ein weltweiter Vergleich der Aussagen wissenschaftlicher Einrichtungen zu 
Wirkungen auf die Gesundheit des Menschen zeigt die große Bandbreite von 
Bewertungen (ITA 2020: 95).
Fachliche und rechtliche Handhabung des Immissionsschutzes erfordert Bewertung 
von Umwelteinwirkungen nach dem Schutz- und dem Vorsorgegrundsatz:
▪ Schutzgrundsatz: Schutz vor Gefahren, 
aus dem mit hinreichender Wahrschein-
lichkeit ein erheblicher Schaden für 
Mensch oder Umwelt entstehen kann.
▪ Vorsorgegrundsatz: Vermeidung eines 
theoretisch möglichen bzw. vermuteten 
Umweltschadens (Gefahrenverdacht 
oder „Besorgnispotenzial“).
5 Vorsorge als Planungsauftrag
▪ Gemeinden sind ermächtigt, vorbeugenden Umweltschutz 
zu betreiben*), können Schadensmöglichkeiten in Betracht 
ziehen, für die nur ein „Gefahrenverdacht“ oder 
„Besorgnispotenzial“ besteht.
▪ Berücksichtigung der Umweltbelange kann über 
fachgesetzliche Grenzwerte hinaus gehen.**)

1 Problemstellung
▪ Mobilfunkstrahlung mit hochfrequenten elektromagnetischen Feldern 
(HF-EMF) zählt (wie Luftschadstoffe und Lärm) gemäß § 3 BImSchG als 
"Strahlen und ähnliche Umwelteinwirkungen" zu den „schädlichen 
Umwelteinwirkungen, die (...) geeignet sind, Gefahren, erhebliche Nachteile 
oder erhebliche Belästigungen (...) herbeizuführen.“
▪ Weltweite Faktenlage zu gesundheitlichen Wirkungen und Risiken der HF-EMF 
macht räumliche Steuerung durch Zuordnung schutzbedürftiger Nutzungen 
zu Quellen der mobilen Kommunikations-Infrastruktur via Funk erforderlich.
Anzahl der Studien zu verschiedenen gesundheitlichen Auswirkungen bei Expositionen, die in ihrer Intensität
