    No full text
This article discusses the role of photography as a medium for proclaiming the values of love in the Catholic faith through an exhibition entitled Stella Matutina: Love One Another, organized by the Diocese of Bandung. This exhibition presents the works of 33 photographers who reflect the message of Christian love inspired by the Gospel of John 15:12 in the form of simple and touching visual narratives. This research uses a qualitative narrative approach with a study of theological aesthetics and visual communication theories, as well as an analysis of the creative process, photography techniques, and the spiritual impact of the works exhibited. The results of the study show that the photography in this exhibition successfully proclaims Catholic values in a contextual and communicative manner. Through a human interest approach and reflective visual compositions such as the use of eye-level perspectives, monochromatic colors, and natural lighting, the message of love is presented in everyday life and can be accepted across religions and cultures. Art becomes a means of preaching that does not only convey dogma, but also brings to life the experience of faith and opens up a space for inclusive spiritual encounters. This exhibition emphasizes that art, when combined with religious values, can build a civilization of love and become a reflective vehicle in a multicultural society. HARMONY OF HUSBAND-WIFE RELATION IN ISLAMIC RELIGION: MUBADALAH AND ATTACHMENT THEORY INTEGRATIVE ANALYSIS ON AL-BAQARAH 223

    No full text
This study aims to analyze in depth the harmony in husband and wife relations as implied in Surah al-Baqarah verse 223. This study integrates two relevant theoretical frameworks, namely the Mubadalah theory and Attachment theory. The Mubadalah theory, with its focus on reciprocal and mutual relations, is used to examine the implications of the verse on the dynamics of equal and mutually beneficial interactions in marriage. Meanwhile, the Attachment theory, which emphasizes emotional bonds and the need for security in relationships, is applied to understand how the verse contributes to the formation and maintenance of intimacy and emotional support between husband and wife. This study uses a qualitative approach that is library research. In interpreting the verse, this study uses the tahlili method. The primary data sources in this study are several classical and contemporary tafsir books, the mubadalah theory book by Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir and the attachment theory psychology book by John Bowlby. The secondary data in this study are: articles, journals, dissertations, family relationship books, and scientific papers which are relevant to the discussion of this study. The results of the study show that the integrative analysis of the mubadalah theory towards QS. Surah al-Baqarah verse 223; the wife has the same rights in the household, both in intimate relationships, love, rights and obligations as well as in decision making. Meanwhile, the integrative analysis of the Attachment theory with QS. Surah al-Baqarah verse 223 implicitly shows that the husband is the caregiver for his wife and the wife is the caregiver for her husband. The sacred agreement in marriage requires both the wife and husband to be present not only physically but also emotionally so that both become a safe place in the household.

Digital Hadith Reception: The Analysis of Netizen Involvement in the Istimnā\u27 Hadith on the Instagram Account @surgadakwahofc: Resepsi Hadis Digital: Analisis Keterlibatan Netizen terhadap Hadits tentang Istimnā\u27 di Akun Instagram @surgadakwahofc

This study is motivated by the growing phenomenon of religious content dissemination, including hadith, through social media platforms such as Instagram. Although hadiths concerning istimnā’ (masturbation) are frequently cited in online religious discourse, there remains a research gap regarding how digital audiences interpret and respond to such religious texts. Addressing this gap, the present study seeks to answer two main questions: how do netizens receive the hadith on istimnā’ posted on the Instagram account @surgadakwahofc, and what factors influence the diversity of their reception? A qualitative approach was employed using content analysis of netizen comments on posts containing the hadith that prohibits deviant sexual behavior. Stuart Hall’s reception theory served as the analytical framework for identifying audience positions in decoding the religious message, namely, dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional readings. The findings reveal that netizen reception is highly diverse and dynamic; some accept the hadith’s meaning textually, others negotiate it according to social context and personal experience, while a few reject it based on rational or modern moral reasoning. This diversity is influenced by social background, level of religious understanding, and individual value orientation. So, the hadith interpretation on social media is a dialogical process involving the interplay between text, context, and audience experience

Schopenhauer’s Pessimism And Nietzsche’s Optimism In Will Humans : Islamic Perspective as Middle way

    No full text
The competitive life of modern humans is often colored by the pressure to achieve success, thus giving rise to two basic attitudes, namely pessimism and optimism that come from human will. This study aims to explore how Schopenhauer and Nietzsche\u27s perspectives on human will relate to pessimistic and optimistic attitudes in the context of competitive modern life. The research question posed is how these two philosophical views can be integrated with the Islamic perspective to find a balance between the two. The method used is descriptive qualitative research through literature study, which uses the method of interpretation and dialogical analysis of the works of both philosophers as well as Islamic texts. The results of the study show that Schopenhauer sees the will as a source of suffering that produces pessimism, while Nietzsche emphasizes the will to power as a driver of optimism and growth. The Islamic perspective offers a middle way by emphasizing the importance of ikhtiar and tawakal, which allows individuals to accept uncertainty while remaining optimistic. By combining these two views, this study highlights how the balance between pessimism and optimism can help individuals face the challenges of modern life and reach their maximum potential

Relasi Virtual Guru Dan Murid Di Ruang Digital: Studi Atas Laman Website Tarekat Syadziliyah dan Naqsyabandi Haqqani

Sufis believe that closeness to God cannot be learned alone through intellectual contemplation, but must be experienced through the guidance of a teacher (murshid). The relationship between a murshid and a salik, which they call a suhbah, is described as a friendly relationship that needs to be established in a friendly atmosphere. So with the spirit of such relationships, it is not surprising that Sufism is now being looked at as a solution to the problems of the contemporary social world. Two large Sufism orders, Naqshbandi Haqqani and Shadziliyah, are examples of orders that have successfully gained popularity. His courage in adapting elements of modernity is also one reason why he is increasingly accepted. This congregation not only allows music and dancing in various traditional celebrations, but also builds virtual spaces and provides online bay\u27at (initiation) services. This phenomenon then raises at least two questions that want to be addressed in this research: 1) how can digital space bridge tarekat practices, and 2) to what extent can the relationship between murshid and murid be established through digital space? This research is entirely qualitative, based on observations of two websites, sufilive.com (for the Naqsyabandi Haqqani congregation) and suficommunities.org (for the Shadziliyah congregation), as well as reading various literature. Apart from that, this research also wants to use Pierre Bourdieu\u27s genetic structuralism approach as an analytical tool. Therefore, this research wants to evaluate the possibility of several vital changes that occur when a relationship that was initially built on the nuances of intimacy with God is mediated by technology. Although it can be considered that this relationship has found a more modern and rational space for manifestation, the transformation of this virtual relationship (suhbah) is important to be explored in depth

From Spiritual Leadership to Functional Leadership: A Qualitative Single-Case Study of Authority Mediation in Jamaah Wirid Khusus Nahdlatul Wathan, Lombok

    No full text
This study responds to the tendency of tariqah studies in Indonesia that highlight elite figures and institutions, thereby neglecting how congregations maintain the continuity of Sufi practice in everyday life. By taking the case of Jamaah Wirid Khusus Nahdlatul Wathan (JWK-NW) in Lombok, this study examines how ritual authority, social relevance, and ethical productivity continue to operate when there is no doctrinal successor murshid, because TGKH Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Madjid is positioned as the first and last murshid. The study uses a qualitative single-case design based on fieldwork (October to November 2023) through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation of Hiziban, wirid, and muzakarah, as well as document analysis (Hizib compilations, decrees, teaching materials, and related publications) with purposive and snowball sampling. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis with source and method triangulation. The findings show that the continuity of the tariqah is maintained through the expansion of functional authority: appointed coordinators and representatives mediate bay’ah, ritual discipline (including qada’), and ethical guidance, without claiming themselves as autonomous murshids. Core practices are carried out in daily and weekly cycles, including congregational Hiziban on Monday night, collective dhikr on Wednesday, and a weekly wazhifah on Friday, and are reinforced by regular muzakarah. Members report increased spiritual awareness, emotional control, and inner tranquility, while also expanding solidarity through infaq and collective work to build madrasah, TPQ, and social services. Historically, the JWK-NW network is reported to have reached around 200,000 members in 1994. This study enriches lived Sufism scholarship by showing a concrete differentiation between spiritual leadership and functional leadership, and it offers the implication that dhikr routines and communal service can become a low-cost infrastructure for character education, youth mentoring, and social cohesion when aligned with local ritual ecology

Haul, Kyai, and Barakah: Integrating Ritual Theory and Sufi Psychology in Pesantren Studies

    No full text
This article addresses a core concern of Living Islam: how lived rituals cultivate ethical selves and communal resilience. Focusing on the annual haul (memorial rite) for a Pesantren kyai, it asks why this practice endures and what it accomplishes for participants’ inner life and social ties. The study combines non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews with alumni and organizers, and document analysis conducted in Bogor between March and September 2024. The data were analyzed using ritual theory and Sufi psychology, conceptualized through the inner faculties of qalb (heart), nafs (self), and ruh (spirit), as well as the formative sequence of takhalli–tahalli–tajalli. This approach highlights four interrelated dynamics: sustained affective ties between alumni and the kyai; a “psychospiritual technology” embedded in the tahlil–pengajian–sedekah sequence that structures attention, reinforces shared meanings, and directs prosocial engagement; processes of identity renewal that strengthen alumni social capital; and moral–spiritual transformation reflected in long-term practices of prayer, charity, and teaching. Conceptually, the paper reframes the haul from commemorative rite to mechanism of ethical formation by linking patterned repetition and symbol to attentional calm, value infusion, and embodied generosity. Practically, it suggests mosque- and school-based modules that synchronize annual rituals with weekly micro-structures (mentoring, halaqah, small service projects) and proposes simple indicators regular congregational prayer, volunteer teaching hours, infaq frequency to track sustained impact. By bridging philosophical analysis with empirical description, the study clarifies how a ritual ecology translates memory into obligation, love into service, and community into a durable infrastructure for lived Islamic ethics

Grounding an Integrative Paradigm in Reading and Interpreting Hadith Based on Scientific Approaches: Membumikan Paradigma Integratif dalam Membaca dan Menafsirkan Hadis melalui Pendekatan Ilmiah

    No full text
The issue of modernity has exerted a considerable influence on contemporary life, particularly through the persistent epistemological dichotomy that separates religion and science. This binary opposition fundamentally contradicts religious principles that serve as comprehensive guides for human life, especially given the numerous Prophetic traditions (hadith) that explicitly address scientific realities. This article examines integrative methodological approaches bridging hadith studies and scientific inquiry, framed by two primary research questions: First, what constitutes a scientific approach in hadith scholarship? Second, to what extent can scientific methodology be applied in interpreting, comprehending, and deriving meaning from hadith texts? Employing qualitative library research methodology, this study demonstrates the critical importance of an integrative approach in addressing complex contemporary issues that transcend traditional halal-haram juridical frameworks. The findings reveal that scientific approaches to hadith studies make significant contributions to expanding religious discourse beyond its conventional doctrinal-immanent limitations. As this methodology gains broader acceptance, hadith literature is progressively liberated from perceptions of rigid normativity or obsolescence, emerging instead as a dynamic intellectual tradition capable of substantive engagement with modern epistemological developments

Localizing The Qur’an in Javanese Pesantren: A Socio-Cultural Interpretation of Al-Ibrīz and Al-Iklīl

The production of Javanese Qur’anic commentaries in Pegon script within the pesantren (Islamic boarding school) tradition reflects the authors varying degrees of engagement with the socio-cultural realities of Javanese society. This paper investigates the influence of socio-cultural factors in Al-Ibrīz li Ma’rifat Tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-‘Azīz by Bisri Mustafa from Pesantren Raudhatut Thalibin (Rembang, Central Java), and Al-Iklīl fī Ma’ānī al-Tanzīl by Misbah Mustafa from Pesantren Al-Balagh (Tuban, East Java). Adopting a descriptive-analytical method, this study explores how both authors responded to socio-cultural phenomena or offered culturally grounded interpretations in their tafsir works. Their use of local knowledge and their responses to cultural practices are analyzed through content analysis to determine their interpretive orientations—whether leaning toward Arabization, Islamization, or localization. The findings reveal that both authors utilize local knowledge to explicate Qur’anic meanings. In responding to social phenomena, they adopt two main approaches: critical evaluation and selective accommodation of cultural practices. This study affirms the dynamic intellectual engagement of pesantren kiais in contextual Qur’anic interpretation

Angelika Neuwirth\u27s Feminist Hermeneutics of Q.S. Āli \u27Imrān (3): 7: The Interpretation of Mutasyābihāt Verses and Muḥkamāt Verses

    No full text
The reading of Q.S. Āli \u27Imrān (3): 7, especially in relation to mutasyābihāt verses (similar, vague, similar to one another, cannot stand alone) and muḥkamāt verses (definite, firm, clear), generally have nothing to do with gender issues. With a critical approach, especially literary and historical approaches, Angelika Neuwirth presents a different interpretation, which implicitly displays the Hermeneutics of Feminism, where muḥkamāt verses and mutasyābihāt verses can be positioned as a discourse of gender equality. This research aims to develop the muḥkamāt-mutasyābihāt theory from Angelika Neuwirth\u27s perspective. The method used is the “qualitative grounded theory” method. The research data is obtained through library research, which is taken from data sources in the form of writings or statements of Angelika Neuwirth regarding Q.S. Āli \u27Imrān (3): 7, as well as data from other sources related to muḥkamāt-mutasyābihāt verses. The data collected were then analyzed and interpreted in such a way. The results show that the reading of Q.S. Āli \u27Imrān (3): 7 is closely related to feminist hermeneutics, and therefore has evolved
