    Misconceptions in the Sinhala Buddhist-Muslim Conflict in Sri Lanka: A New Perspective on ethnic conflict in post-colonial era

    Sri Lanka\u27s vibrant diversity, encompassing a wealth of ethnicities and religions, is tragically fractured by the ongoing conflict between the dominant Sinhala Buddhist majority and the marginalized Muslim minority. This study traces the origins of the conflict between Sri Lanka\u27s dominant Sinhala Buddhist majority and the marginalized Muslim minority back to the colonial legacy that imposed a dichotomous societal structure.  Employing a qualitative approach with the Self and the Other framework, this research utilizes the iceberg model to delve deeper into the underlying causes of conflict. The research reveals that the conflict between Sinhalese Buddhists and the Muslim community arises from an ambiguous sense of self-identity, which is defined by contrasting with the Other. Sinhala Buddhists perceive the growing Muslim community as a threat to the indigenous culture and religion, as reflected in Sinhala culture. This perception is shaped by mental models constructed since the colonial period, during which ethnic and religious classifications were implanted by colonizers as the basis for political rights. The resulting classification fostered a sense of nationalism among the Sinhala Buddhists, fueling resistance against colonial rule. However, this classification also perpetuated a pattern of oppression towards minority groups, viewing them through the same lens as the colonizers viewed the indigenous population, thus perpetuating cycles of conflict and marginalization

    Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, the renowned scholar of Islamization of Knowledge, has recognized the defect of the western worldview concerning man, which eventually brought havoc to humanity. Al-Attas\u27 concept of the nature of man is encountered as a critique of the Western conception of man that causes epistemological-conceptual problems severely in the Islamic world. This article aims to conceptualize al-Attas\u27 concept of human nature. This qualitative research employs the content analysis method of al-Attas works. It uses a descriptive-philosophical approach. The result shows that al-Attas conceptualized the concept of human nature based on the concept of insan, which is defined as a living being that speaks. The concept becomes the antithesis of the western worldview\u27s concept of man. Man is a new creation associated with the duality of the soul in the human self. The reality of man is his articulate soul (nafs al-nathiqah), the soul that took Covenant (mitsaq) with God. This soul can overcome the animal\u27s desire in his body through the purification of the soul to achieve a state of soul of tranquility (nafs al-muthmainnah).     Abstract Materialistic life orientation in the modern era is the reason for the emergence of various life problems, especially psychological problems. One of the psychological problems that arise is the meaninglessness of life or an existential vacuum. If it does not receive serious attention, then the problem has the potential to cause mental health disorders that, in fact, now plague many modern humans. Those who are sober, gradually begin to seek to find solutions to overcome the psychological burden by turning to certain life paths. Among them are those who dive into the world of spirituality, some go through philosophical paths such as Stoicism, which is now widely loved. Therefore, digging into various traditions to find the right solution in overcoming mental health disorders is paramount. Such efforts can also be made through Islamic philosophy. One philosopher who paid special attention to mental health issues was al-Rāzī. This is contained in his thoughts on Philosophic Life. This is the main discussion in this study. The results of this study illustrate that although such thinking appears to defend misunderstood Socrates’ life paths, yet the real philosophic life—instead of imitating Socrates—is to imitate the attributes of God. As for al-Rāzī’s application of the Philosophic Life: training the control of passions; not hurting other beings; not hurting ourself; does not go beyond the extreme limits (defect or excess); and imitate the attributes of God to the extent of man’s abilities.     Living Theology dalam konteks penelitian ini adalah teologi yang hidup di masyarakat. Salah satu problem teologi sekarang adalah banyaknya paham yang mengarah pada intoleransi dan radikalisme. Melihat kekhawatiran tersebut, penelitian ini mengkaji tentang moderasi beragama yang dianggap penting untuk dihadirkan dalam mengimbangi wacana tersebut. Moderasi beragama merupakan bagian dari konsep wasatiyyah mempunyai peranan penting dalam menyatukan masyarakat yang plural dan multikultural di masyarakat. Penelitian ini mengangkat masyarakat transisi di Perumahan Taman Puri Banjaran (Perumahan TPB) Bringin, Ngaliyan, Kota Semarang. Masyarakat transisi memiliki berbagai macam perbedaan, yang rawan terpengaruh paham intoleran, radikalisme maupun ekstremisme. Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian lapangan yang menggunakan metode analisis desktiptif, dengan pendekatan sosiologis dan fenomenologis. Hasil penelitian ini adalah telaah terhadap kegiatan keagamaan masyarakat Perumahan TPB meskipun tergolong perumahan baru yang terletak di perkotaan, namun sudah memiliki pandangan moderat meskipun belum bisa dikatakan sumpurna. Adapun implementasi paham keagamaan yang menunjukkan bahwa masyarakat Perumahan TPB memiliki beberapa pandangan, yakni: (1) memiliki modal sosial kultural, (2) memiliki tokoh-tokoh yang moderat, (3) memiliki pandangan yang terbuka (inklusif) dan (4) memiliki pemahaman pluralisme yang baik

    SALAFI-INFLUENCERS ON SOCIAL MEDIA: ANALYTICAL STUDY OF OF THE DISCOURSE OF NEO-SALAFI PREACHERS

    This discourse analytical study tackles the rise of Neo-Salafism in the digital age. It constitutes an exploration of the discursive technics, strategies and practices employed by the new generation of Salafī preachers on social media. It strives to unveil the various discursive methods of indoctrination pursued by Salafi-influencers and the ends such strategies tend to serve. It involves an exploration of linguistic and contextual activities and seeks to identify explicit and implicit messages incorporated into the discourse of those young preachers. The main hypothesis upon which this study rests is that young preachers of Neo-Salafism resort to modified discursive technics that correspond to the age of digitalization and social media activism for the sake of ensuring a resounding impact among their addressees. These recipients represent a social incubator to the extremist Salafī ideology and a potential pool for a new wave of radicalization among the Muslim youth worldwide. A multi-dimensional methodological framework is employed to tackle the topic raised by this study. The data analyzed within the framework of this study consist of speeches and instructional communications by young Salafī preachers published through different social media platforms.     Abstract Multiculturalism inspires multicultural education. Multicultural education is a concept, creating equal educational opportunities for students of different backgrounds and helping students acquire knowledge, attitudes and skills to interact and communicate with citizens from diverse groups so that a moral society is loved. Through multicultural education students are expected to have good competence in behaving and implementing democratic values, humanism and pluralism in the school environment and outside of school. On the other hand, educational institutions are tasked with preparing students to become a generation that has insight into attitudes and actions in the life of the nation and state that pays attention to multiculturalism. The development of multicultural education in schools can use a management approach both in teaching and learning activities in school activities and in the application of multicultural-based school management. The purpose of this study was to find out the form of multicultural education that integrates with the fields and activities of the school and how social interaction in the family of this educational institution is based on cultural and multicultural differences. The research approach uses a phenomenological approach that aims to describe the conditions or phenomena that occur, with the type of field research that is qualitative in nature. tera is based on multiethnic and multicultural differences as seen in the formation of an organizational structure for human resources in multi-ethnic educational institutions. Pendidikan multikultural merupakan sebuah konsep menciptakan persamaan peluang pendidikan bagi peserta didik yang berbeda latar belakang dan membantu peserta didik memperoleh pengetahuan, sikap dan keterampilan untuk berinteraksi, dan komunikasi dengan warga dari kelompok beragam agar tercipta sebuah tatanan masyarakat bermoral. Melalui pendidikan multikultural, peserta didik diharapkan memiliki kompetensi yang baik dalam bersikap dan menerapkan nilai demokratis, humanisme dan pluralisme di lingkungan sekolah dan di luar sekolah. Di sisi lain, lembaga pendidikan bertugas mempersiapkan peserta didik menjadi generasi yang memiliki pengetahuan, wawasan / sikap dan tindakan di dalam kehidupan berbangsa dan bernegara yang memperhatikan latar belakang multikulturalisme. Pengembangan pendidikan multikultural di sekolah dapat menggunakan pendekatan manajemen baik di dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar, kegiatan sekolah maupun penerapan manajemen sekolah berbasis multicultural. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bentuk pendidikan multikultural yang menyatu dengan bidang dan kegiatan sekolah serta bagaimana interaksi sosial dalam keluarga lembaga pendidikan ini berdasarkan pada perbedaan multietnik dan multikultural Pendekatan penelitian menggunakan pendekatan fenomenologis yang bertujuan untuk menggambarkan keadaan atau fenomena yang terjadi, dengan jenis penelitian lapangan yang bersifat kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dengan observasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian diperoleh adanya salah satu kegiatan sebagai bentuk pendidikan multikultural yaitu kegiatan Cross Cultural Understanding yang bermanfaat untuk menumbuhkan dan menguatkan nilai-nilai multikultural sebagai sebuah ikatan kebersamaan dan kemanusiaan.  Selain itu adanya interaksi sosial secara positif dan sejahtera berdasar pada perbedaan multietnik dan multikultural yang terlihat dalam pembentukan struktur organisasi sumber daya manusia lembaga pendidikan yang berbasis multietnis. Pembentukan struktur organisasi yang berbasis multietnis dapat saling menguatkan sehingga lebih fokus dan optimal dalam mewujudkan impian kehidupan multikulturalisme yang harmonis dan damai di lingkungan sekolah.     Adanya berbagai permasalahan dalam proses kehidupan menjadi hal yang pasti terjadi, Hal demikian tentu akan berpengaruh terhadap kesehatan mental yang dimiliki seseorang. Seseorang dengan kesehatan mental yang baik, akan mampu menghadapi masalah dengan penuh keyakinan diri tanpa ada gangguan hebat pada struktur diri, bahkan akan mampu mengembangkan potensi yang ada dalam dirinya.  Dengan demikian, upaya penjagaan kesehatan mental untuk selalu dilakukan. Salahsatu upaya tersebut yakni adanya sikap tawakal yang telah tertanam pada diri seseorang sehingga mampu untuk diimplementasikan kemudian. Pembahasan ini tentunya akan banyak mengkaji tentang jiwa manusia, sehingga dianggap sesuai dengan mengakaji melalui pemikiran tokoh dengan predikat seorang sufi.  Pada kajian ini akan menggunakan pemikiran sufi masyhur hampir semua kalangan, Muhyiddīn Ibnu ‘Arabi. Penelitian ini mengimplementasikan metode deskriptif-analitis, dengan jenis penelitian kualitatif dengan library research atau studi pustaka yang menggunakan data primer dan data sekunder. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tawakal yang diusung oleh Ibnu ‘Arabi merupakan sikap kepasrahan hamba kepada Rabb-nya yang didahului dengan adanya usaha-usaha sebelum penyerahan itu dilakukan. Keadaan demikian tentunya perlu untuk selalu dibarengi akan keyakinan. Sehingga pada diri hamba akan memiliki harapan, kekuatan, ketenangan dan ketentraman yang akan berpengaruh baik terhadap kesehatan mental. Dimana, harapan akan mampu menghempas keraguan, kekuatan mampu menghadapi permasalahan, dan  ketenangan dan ketentraman akan mampu menghempas amarah, angan-angan, khayalan, frustasi (tekanan perasaan), konflik (pertentangan batin), kecemasan

    Multicultural Islam in the Ottoman Turkish Civilization during the Medieval Era

    The objective of this study is to explore the Ottoman Empire\u27s management model in navigating a diverse, multiethnic, and multireligious society, thereby fostering an advanced and dynamic civilization. Employing a qualitative approach with a content analysis model during data interpretation, this research identifies a synergistic alignment between the open policy and the empire\u27s response to ethnic, cultural, and religious differences. This alignment stems from the extensive conquest process and the organic awareness within the community, influencing social interactions. The open policy, characterized by the establishment of local entities such as readers, millets, reāyā, sipähis, and timars, facilitates the accommodation of diverse interests, worship practices, and cultural expressions. This policy is instrumental in supporting a society\u27s multicultural awareness, fostering openness to cultural assimilation, and promoting respect for religious practices. Notably, Islam is positioned as a safeguard to ensure the enforcement of power supremacy as outlined in The Ottoman code, but the state largely refrains from intervening in religious activities and cultural expressions unless there is a clear threat to its authority. This awareness of distinct private and public spheres fosters a pluralistic and multicultural reality within Ottoman society, with the state adopting a relatively moderate position

    The surge in scholarly fervor across the Arab world following the Hellenistic resurgence instigated shifts in religious thought concerning theodicy. Saadia Gaon and al-Qāḍī Abd al-Jabbār, representing Jewish and Islamic scholars respectively, exemplify this evolving trend. This study endeavors to delve into Gaon and al-Qāḍī Abd al-Jabbār\u27s perspectives on divine justice and its implications for human agency. Employing a qualitative approach with content analysis as the analytical tool, this research reveals a convergence of ideas between Gaon and al-Qāḍī regarding the manifestation of divine justice through human autonomy. This autonomy operates within the framework of revealed restrictions transmitted to the messenger of God. These limitations establish a moral framework delineating choices of good and evil, ultimately entrusted to human discretion guided by reason. The primacy of reason underscores moral rationality, guiding individuals towards virtuous conduct. Within the realm of human freedom, diverse actions unfold, contributing to cultural evolution and the advancement of civilization. Moral rationality emerges as a pivotal tool in religious comprehension, fostering dialogue between Abrahamic faiths and facilitating the pursuit of a more cohesive global society

    Stilistika dan Tafsir: Memahami Variasi Stile dalam Tafsir Rahmat Oemar Bakry

    The works of tafsir in Indonesia, from before to after independence, reflect the socioeconomic and cultural situations of the writers and readers, as seen by the employment of numerous scripts such as Arabic, Cacarakan, Jawi, Latin, Lontara, and Pegon. This study analyzes style changes in Oemar Bakry’s Tafsir Rahmat, specifically interpreting Q.S. An-Nisā’ [4]: 15-18. This study used a stylistic technique to detect four types of stile variation in Tafsir Rahmat: word choice, sentence type variation, rhetorical writing style, and cross-referencing. The study discovered that, in addition to script, style variety influences the character of tafsir compositions. Although prior research has focused on language, script, and specific themes in tafsir works, the study of stylistic differences in Tafsir Rahmat remains limited. The analysis results reveal that stile changes not only simplify message delivery, but also enhance the beauty of language in interpretation. This study contributes significantly to the study of tafsir by emphasizing the role of stylistic variation in the efficiency of tafsir communication.
