Examining Ibn Sīnā’s and Suhrawardī’s Notion of the Soul: Reflections on Their Philosophical Contributions in the Modern Context

    Get PDF
The intricate nature of contemporary human life has placed individuals in a paradoxical position, simultaneously serving as active agents shaping societal development and passive recipients of the outcomes of this evolution. The predominant emphasis on material and intellectual pursuits has, in some instances, resulted in the neglect of the soul as a bridge to the transcendent realm, often associated with the divine. Consequently, many modern individuals find themselves disconnected from their own existence and spiritual well-being. This research aims to address the real-world challenges faced by contemporary individuals by exploring the philosophical concepts of Ibn Sīnā and Suhrawadī, which hold significant relevance to the conditions of modern society. This study, utilizing a qualitative approach and a comparative synthesis analysis model, unveils a convergence in the conceptualization of the soul between Ibn Sīnā and Suhrawardī, particularly in their efforts to curb the influence of the animalistic soul (an-nafs al-hayāwanīyah). While their methodologies differ, reflecting their respective Aristotelian and illuminationist traditions, their shared objective remains unwavering. Ibn Sīnā emphasizes the rational soul (an-nafs al-naṭiqah) through acquired reason (al-\u27aql al-mustafad), striving to attain divine knowledge, a goal also pursued, albeit via a different path, by Suhrawardī through ascetic practices. The pursuit of maximal rationality and the adoption of ascetic practices offer modern individuals a potent means to combat the soul-crushing emptiness often associated with spiritual and existential crises

    No full text
The article focuses on the lectures of Salim A Fillah (SAF), a popular preacher known for his Islamist activism within the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) in Indonesia. The data is obtained through digital observation and literature review. The analysis employs the Roland Barthes semiology method to examine SAF\u27s lectures on the history of Islamization in Nusantara, which are widely available on platforms like YouTube. The denotation stage of the analysis involves SAF dividing the history of Islam\u27s arrival in the archipelago into seven waves, each characterized by distinct discourse. However, during the connotation stage, it is revealed that SAF\u27s periodization of Islamic history is framed by a narrative of Islamism. This means that SAF portrays the history of Islam in the archipelago as the history of Islamism. The article suggests that SAF implicitly preaches that the saints who spread Islam in the archipelago were individuals with missionary missions similar to present-day Islamists in Indonesia. Additionally, the article highlights SAF\u27s emphasis on transnational Islamic movements like HTI and the Muslim Brotherhood, which are associated with the PKS, as continuations of the missionary efforts of these saints. Therefore, it concludes that SAF has constructed an Islamist narration of Islamic history in Indonesia. SAF also blurred the lines between historical facts and ideological storytellin

The Controversy over the Authority of Āsim bin Bahdalah Al-Kufi in Qira’at Studies and Hadith Studies during the Abbasid Dynasty

    Get PDF
This article explores the comparative authority of Āsim b. Bahdalah al-Kufi in the realms of Qur’anic recitation and hadith studies. Āsim, who lived in the second century AH (128 A.H.), held a significant position in the field of qira’at, boasting a substantial following, including in Indonesia. His narration of the qira’at was widely recognized for its high degree of authenticity and reliability. However, when it came to the domain of hadith studies, his authority faced negative evaluations (majruh) from critics in this field. This study adopts a critical historical approach to scrutinize the disparities in Āsim b. Bahdalah’s authority between Qur’anic qira’at and Hadith studies. The findings of this investigation reveal that these discrepancies in authority were closely linked to political factors associated with the ‘Abbasid dynasty. Abu ‘Ali Muhammad b. ‘Ali b. Muqlah al-Shirazi, a prominent Minister in Baghdad during the Abbasid era, played a pivotal role in shaping the views of Ibn Mujahid and influencing the content of his work. Ibn Mujahid opted to document the name of Āsim b. Bahdalah over Abu Muhammad Ya’qub b. Ishaq al-Hadrami al-Basri, who was deemed disloyal to the Abbasid rulers. The political pressure exerted by the Abbasid rulers appears to have played a crucial role in his decision-making process. In fact, the Abbasid rulers went to great lengths, even compelling scholars who disagreed with Ibn Mujahid’s views to retract their positions and issue apologies for their dissent. Some scholars were subjected to imprisonment as a consequence of their refusal to align with the official viewpoint. This comparison underscores how politics had the capacity to wield substantial influence over the assessment of intellectual authority across various fields of knowledge in historical contexts

    No full text
This article analyzes the phenomenon of religious moderation in contemporary Papua. This problem is an interesting phenomenon, because since Papua became part of Indonesia in 1969, socio-religious developments in this region have often been colored by an atmosphere of disharmony between adherents of religions, and this atmosphere even contributed to the 1998-2001 Papuan conflict. However, after the conflict, religious moderation programs and counseling were carried out massively. This research seeks to reconstruct religious identity that supports the resolution of post-conflict religious life in Papua. This article focuses on the problem of why religious moderation occurs and what the implications are for religious life in Papua today. This research was conducted with a historical and socio-religious approach, as well as using historical research methods in which there are four stages, namely: heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The findings of this study are: First, the 1998-2001 conflict in Papua was largely caused by a lack of nationalism and respect for fellow citizens. Second, post-conflict religious moderation efforts have been carried out by all religions and mass organizations in Papua. Religious leaders: Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism have played a role in the resolution and harmonization of religious life in Papua. Third, religious moderation in Papua greatly impacts social and spiritual aspects. Brotherhood in Papua does not look at religion, ethnicity, and culture, and issues surrounding an independent Papua are issues that undermine harmony in Papua

It\u27s just that this often doesn\u27t materialize because of a family problem and dispute that is difficult to compromise on, so the path taken is divorce (talak). The problem that will be examined is the validity of divorce outside the courtroom in the perspective of hadith. To answer this question, the writer uses descriptive-analytical theory. After the required data has been collected, the authors carry out an analysis and comparison with positive law through the Compilation of Islamic Law. As a result, divorce is indeed something that is permitted by religion and at the same time becomes behavior that is hated by Allah. So it takes policy and comprehensive understanding of this problem. On the other hand, the state requires that the divorce process be carried out in the Religious Courts, in order to ensure the benefit of each party and become a standard legal basis

This article examines the changes in the interpretation of the illustration of heaven among Indonesian mufassirin (interpreters), including As-Singkili, Hamka, and M. Quraish Shihab, using Thomas Kuhn\u27s paradigm shift theory. The study reveals a shift in the meaning of the illustration of heaven in each generation of interpreters in Indonesia, particularly in the areas of the width of heaven, the river that flows beneath heaven, fruits in heaven, spouses and houris (heavenly virgins) in heaven, and the color green and adornment for humans in heaven. The article concludes that As-Singkili\u27s interpretation is considered normal science as it remains literal, whereas Hamka and M. Quraish Shihab\u27s interpretations are categorized under scientific revolution due to the rationalization and development of their interpretations still based on normal science or literal texts. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the evolution of interpretation of Islamic texts in Indonesia
